LocalStories

We live in a beautiful part of the world. I mean I’ve always known that, but lately I’ve taken to exploring hidden parts of our coastal sanctuary and have well and truly fallen in love all over again.

It was another Monday morning, my alarm went off and I rolled over thinking about how I was going to drag myself out of bed and into the gym to achieve even a partially productive workout. Don’t get me wrong, I do love the gym, however lately I’ve fallen into a rut and facing it each day seems to be such a chore. Reminding myself how much better I would feel afterwards,

I got out of bed and pulled back the blinds. Instantly I was met by an incredible mesh of blood red and burnt orange. The lip of the ocean clumsily met the horizon, reflecting the beauty that was unravelling above it. The sun was rising, and I was transfixed. When nature had produced a morning masterpiece how could I confine myself to the insides of a gym? I ditched the gym and settled on a beach walk in order to fully appreciate nature’s beauty before the beginning of another week.

I started walking along Roy Wood beach, Corlette, where the masts of sleeping boats sporadically broke the sunrise. From here, at the end of the beach, there is a bush track, heading towards Nelson Bay, which hugs the water’s edge, climbs Corlette Point and provides exquisite water views. The track meets the Anchorage path, which you can follow along the Corlette break wall to Bagnall beach. Along the way, the Council have installed a number of outdoor exercise stations including,

stretches, step-ups, chin-ups and bench curls, which provide a bit of diversity to the walk. The track follows the water all the way to Dutchman’s beach, and further on into Nelson Bay. It is a mixture of bike path, beach, break wall and bush track, and it’s amazing. It’s perfect for dog walkers, a mid-walk dip in the ocean, a children’s adventure or a BBQ beach breakfast. Arriving home, the sky had faded to a fairy floss mess of pastel purples and pinks and the cool morning breeze had become a little more forgiving on my skin. I felt refreshed, relaxed and mentally prepared for the week.

The following morning, of course I skipped the gym, and headed out to Fingal Bay to explore The Tomaree Coastal walk that meets Big Rocky. The track starts part of the way up the hill on Marine Drive. It’s a bush track that leads to beach fronts and

rocky edges. It was a bit of choose your own adventure track, with different forks in the road providing a myriad of alternatives. I crossed a timber boardwalk, explored the cliff’s edge and finished at the top of a lookout that provided magnificent views of Fingal Bay. I enjoyed the adventure so much, that it wasn’t until I got back to my car that I realised I’d actually worked up quite a sweat.

We live in such a beautiful place and I have decided not to take that for granted. Hidden walking tracks are speckled throughout the Port Stephens Peninsula and they are well worth the search. From Tomaree Mountain, to Birubi beach to hidden bush tracks. Whether you’re after an adventure hike, a relaxing waterfront stroll or somewhere a little different to walk the dog, there is no doubt, you’ll find your hidden refuge. Get outside, explore and appreciate the natural beauty that surrounds us. Port Stephens is one of a kind.

Issue 23: Whats On In Our Backyard 5

Don’t forget to

of course it’s impossible to forget to breathe since our respiratory system is part of our autonomic nervous system. This means that although we have some control over our breathing, provided our nervous system is healthy, we don’t have to be thinking about it for it to happen.

Most of the time, we take breathing for granted unless we are finding it difficult, for example, those who suffer from asthma or emphysema. In these instances, panic can make things worse because panic usually induces hyper-ventilation – excess breathing (which is a stress response). Therefore, stress or poor health/lack of fitness can cause us to breathe more than normal.

And while the state of our health can affect our breath, it’s also fair to say that how we tend to breathe can also affect the state of our health; for better or worse.

What Kind of Stuff affects Breathing?

One example is posture. It could be functional/structural (jaw problems) or just habitual, for example, hunching over, forward head, collapsed chest. On the other hand though, the opposite extreme also affects our ability to breathe efficiently; that is, puffing the chest, tightening the tummy, arching the lower back, and rolling the shoulders down and back in an exaggerated way.

And then of course, there’s stress and diet.

The majority of people who feel stressed – and sadly, this is most of us, most of the time – will tend towards muscle tension, particularly around the abdominal area. This means our main muscle of breathing, the diaphragm, becomes restricted which the nervous system interprets as fight or flight. And actually, there may not be anything particularly stressful going on in a person’s life, but if they are holding tension in their belly just because they don’t want their tummy to stick out, the result will be the same. In other words, a stressful experience can mean we unconsciously create muscle tension (which affects the breath), but, on the other hand, deliberately creating muscle tension also induces stress and thus affects the breath. This low-level hyper-ventilation means we’ve created a similar, habitual breath pattern to that of someone who is either ill or very unfit.

Chronic, shallow over-breathing has many side effects that can manifest as seemingly unrelated symptoms. It’s possible these symptoms will trigger something more serious down the track. Here are just some:

• Limits the way oxygen binds to haemoglobin in order to make its way into the cells;

• Increases appetite and cravings for carbs and stodgy food;

• Contributes towards inflammatory issues including skin problems (particularly around the mouth);

• Kidneys (urinating more than normal);

• Vertigo (dizziness):

• Induces SNS (fight or flight) so glucose gets dumped into the blood, BP and heart rate will increase, and blood supply to the organs is reduced;

• Depletes adrenals and inhibits the body’s ability to self-heal;

• Body stiffness.

So what can we do to turn things around?

The good news is that we can start to improve things simply by softening excess tension, changing our postural and dietary habits and consciously slowing down the breath. This will activate a PSNS (rest and digest) response and the body will go into healing mode.

Things to remember:

• Always breathe through your nose.

• Eat more alkaline forming foods (fresh fruit and veg).

• Work on your strength so you can sit and stand tall in a relaxed way without tension.

• When practising yoga simply breathe naturally and let go of competitiveness.

Unfortunately, yoga has become a modality where healthy, fit people are often directed to breathe more than normal. But audible breathing and hyperventilation is what usually happens when we are panicking, suffering from ill health or just not as fit as we could be.

When it comes to enrolling your children into sporting activities, there is no doubt that the pressure can be intense. I proudly avoided bowing down to this pressure, with the result that my child was enrolled in zero extra-curricula activities. There seemed to be so many gleeful benefits to this: no costly term fees to pay, no standing on the edge of sporting fields, thinking about all the things I'd rather be doing, no endless hours shuttling to and from practice, no pressure for my child to win and be the best, the list goes on. However, I recently had one of those moments which can only be described as 'mother's guilt'.

With the growing trend in young people using technology as the modern day playground, and the stark realisation that my own daughter was spending endless hours on the iPad and becoming more and more reluctant to enjoy outdoor trips and activities, I knew it was time to pry her away from the screen, encourage her to focus on the 'real world' and spend social time with other children. Enrolling her into an organised sport seemed to be the perfect solution.

In fact, motivating your children to be active not only improves their mental and physical health now, but it will also benefit them later in life.

Here are some facts:

• Lack of exercise is a major reason for the growing rate of obesity among children. Rather than letting your child watch TV all day or use technology, encourage him/her to spend time each day in play that requires him/her to be physically active.

• Exercise can strengthen children's bones, something they will benefit from as adults. Children who participate in weight-bearing impact sports such as running, gymnastics, tumbling, and dance have higher bone density than children whose major activity is a non-weight-bearing exercise such as swimming.

• Active children may increase their chance of becoming healthy adults. Children who enjoy being active are more likely to develop the lifelong, healthy habit of being physically active. Physical activity decreases the risk of obesity, cancer, diabetes, high blood pressure, stoke, and heart disease later in life. Simply put, people who are active on a regular basis tend to live longer than inactive individuals.

If you are keen to get your child to be more active, you need to think "fun". Encourage your child to ride a bike, swim, or play ball with friends. Get your child involved in organized sports and classes. Most importantly, become a role model. If your child sees you laying around or always sitting in front of the television or computer, it will be hard for him to know any better. Get the whole family involved in games, cycling, or other active play. If you get involved, your child will be encouraged to do the same

If you are considering enrolling your child into an organised sport, here are some great tips to help you to look for the right fit for your child:

• What’s the coach’s approach? Is the emphasis on competition, developing elite players and winning, or on developing skills, encouraging teamwork and having some fun?

- BY SaFFRon QuanTRell -

• Does the program welcome beginners? Look for groups that welcome and encourage kids, regardless of age or skill level.

• Is the sport right for your child? Sometimes, finding the right activity takes some trial and error.

• What are you child's interests. Just because you were a champion hockey player or dance star, it doesn't mean your child will have the same skills and interests. Ask them what they like and find a good fit.

And remember, if - just like almost every other mother in the world - you experience 'mother's guilt' now and again, don't give yourself too hard a time. This human emotion is just there to remind you to pay attention to the way you do things. It’s a tool for reflection, which causes you to pause and notice and initiate change if you need to... Ultimately, it means you care enough to want to change something.

ever wondered what all the hype is about

Well, step into a Hot yoga room this Winter and let the luxurious warmth embrace you, it’s similar to the comfort you feel when you are standing outside on a warm sunny day. now just pause for a moment and Imagine that feeling.

While soaking up the warmth you can also detoxify your entire system in just 60 minutes, leaving you completely renewed.

The Benefits of the Heat:

BuRN FAT eFFeCTIVeLY/INCReAse MeTABOLIsM:

Your heart rate will increase when activity is done in the heat which creates increased cardiovascular activity and quite simply will cause you to burn more calories quicker. Additionally, the heat increases metabolism levels and speeds up the breakdown of glucose and fatty acids. This helps to tone your body and lose weight.

DeTOxIFICATION:

Practicing yoga in a heated room stimulates the lymphatic system responsible for flushing out toxins from your system. This rids your body of harmful substances and makes it healthier. The hot and humid room makes your body sweat, which promotes detoxification and elimination through the skin, the body’s largest organ. Your capillaries will dilate in the heat oxygenating the tissues, muscles, glands and organs and helping in the removal of waste products.

sAFe AND eAsY sTReTCHING AND OPeNING MusCuLOsKeLeTAL sTRuCTuRes:

While the core temperature of your body may rise no more than a mere 0.5 degree during the course a hot yoga class, the superficial soft tissue structures, including the fascia, ligaments, muscles and tendons will warm up quickly and allow you to move further, more comfortably and more safely in all directions than while exercising in a cooler environment. The heat produces a fluid-like stretch allowing for greater range of movement. Your muscles and connective tissue become more elastic and will help you to go deeper into a yoga pose as the body becomes more flexible with less chance of injury. Moreover, the tendons and ligaments are lubricated, thereby increasing your strength, making you tougher and less prone to injury.

IMPROVeD sPINAL INTeGRITY AND NeRVOus sYsTeM FuNCTION:

By moving the body and thus the spine into all ranges of motion, the student actively opens the veterbrae of the spinal column and strengthens the supportive muscle groups around the spinal column.

This ensures minimal spinal dysfunction that may result in nerve interference on the pathways between the brain and the body. A healthy spine allows you to enjoy optimal health and well-being. Your nervous system function is greatly improved by opening the joints of the spinal column and messages are carried more efficiently to and from your brain.

DeePeR PeRFusION OF BLOOD INTO TIssues AND ORGANs:

The heat thins down the blood and allows it to perfuse deeply into body tissues and organs to facilitate healing. Stretching your muscles in the heat stimulates blood flow to different parts of the body, thereby encouraging circulation of blood and improving the functioning of the circulatory system. Increased blood flow also increases oxygen and nutrient content to different body parts thus invigorating various organs and systems.

MeNTAL FOCus AND DIsCIPLINe:

While the practice may appear to be just physical activity, it is also a form of waking meditation. The hot environment demands a sharpening of your mental focus, concentration and determination during class.

Students notice an absence of distracting thoughts, during the class, as they concentrate on their breath, the posture, their image in the mirror and the guidance of the teacher.

Through the discipline to the practice of yoga comes the freedom of the mind. When one develops concentration it leads to meditation. Meditation stills the modifications of the mind. Yoga Sutra 1.2 Yogash chittah vritti nirodhah- Yoga is the cessation of the fluctuations of the mind. One will notice from this practice less reactivity in our daily lives and the ability to be still in action, responding to life’s challenges with clarity.

RAPID HeALING FROM INJuRY AND DIseAse:

There are certainly tremendous restorative benefits from the practice of any style of yoga, as the student combines conscious breathing with particular movements that stretch, strengthen and stimulate all body systems. The heated environment achieves these positive changes quickly in your body and mind and beautifully compliments any other style of yoga or exercise that you may perform.

The body raises its temperature while fighting an infection. Similarly, the raised temperature improves T-cell function, assists your immune system and reduces the chances of infection.

In the short term you will sleep better, feel happier, be less injury prone with a more energetic and toned body. Now who does not want that?

In the long term you will have overall improved physical and mental health. Hot Yoga will be the best investment you can make into your long term health and wellness this Winter.

Zone Active Gymsports at Taylors Beach are running Hot Yoga classes throughout Winter. Visit www.zoneactivefitness.com.au/timetables-enrolment for class information and to purchase a class pass.

nita lemonia McHugh is a Registered nurse. She is passionate about her work and enjoys assisting people to obtain their aesthetic goals.

She has worked alongside Dr Soo-Keat Lim at the Ashbrooke Vein and Cosmetic Centre for the past 10 years assisting him with Pre and Post Operative Liposculpture Care.

A skilled injector, she assesses your needs in a wholistic manner. She believes with facial rejuvenation, that volume has to be restored, lines addressed and skin revised to complete the makeover. A believer in natural restoration, enhancing your features and not causing distortions of features. Her technique with lip augmentation is soft and natural, and she is a perfectionist with balance and evenness. She is known to have an eye for detail and works with the client to achieve desired but realistic results. Nita is a certified Master Injector of both anti wrinkle injectables and dermal fillers. Her knowledge and expertise have seen her travel both the country and globe representing companies while teaching both doctors and nurses advanced techniques of injecting.

Q. What do I want? How much do I need it? How long will it last? Will I look plastic?

A. They are most of the frequently asked questions.

All dermal fillers are not the same. The difference between an injector and an experienced master injector is the ability to be able to choose the right products to achieve the desired results. After an initial consultation at Rejuven8 we recommend the appropriate filler and give the client a treatment plan, explaining what they need.

The amount of dermal filler is governed by the extent of the volume loss, the client expectation and what is required to achieve the desired result.

Ask Nita:

How long will it last? Dermal fillers are manufactured differently and are designed for specific purposes. The more the Hyaloronic chain is cross linked the longer it will last, as it takes longer to break down.

Fast metabolisms break it down quicker. That is why gym goers/runners may need another product that is bio-stimulant and not a Hyaloronic acid filler. A product may be advertised for 12 months. However you need to consider that during this time you are continuing to age. Stress/weight loss/weight gain change the dynamics of your facial structure. This is why even though the product may last 12 months clients may need top ups 6 monthly to counteract their biological decline.

Will I look plastic? In the hands of an experienced injector, dermal fillers enhance your features and not distort them. Many "overdone" people who have a blown up plastic look have had excessive fillers. At Rejuven8 we rejuvenate your face, not over treat it.

Issue 23: Whats On In Our Backyard 13

Whilst we all strive to share healthy, loving, nurturing relationships, often the reality is our relationships fall short and are filled with arguments, pain and hurt.

With the increasing rate of divorces happening today, the key to change is the way we interact and communicate with each other.

“communication is the fuel that keeps the fire of your relationship burning; without it your relationship grows cold.” William Paisley

It is how you connect with your partner, how you share how you feel, what you think and what you need and the words you use to do this.

To deepen your connection through communication you must first identify whether your communication is aggressive or loving?

Aggressive communication is often identified as abusive language, however there is a hidden form of aggressive communication that comes from every day words we use, which trigger a defensive response.

We learn as a small child to judge, criticise and label. When we see a new baby we start labelling: “you are beautiful”; progressing to “you are being naughty”; “you are clever”; labelling everything right or wrong. As the child grows up and becomes an adult, he/she is now communicating the same way he/she learnt as a child, starting sentences with "YOU are...."

Bruce Lipton discusses the subconscious programming of a child and how these programs become destructive as an adult. Between the age of 0-7 a child’s brain waves are in THETA state, the state of imagination, the state of hypnosis. Children learn through watching and downloading information based on what they see and experience. At age 7 they enter a state of consciousness whereby they already have a database of information to refer to. 70% of this database of information has programs running that promote negative self talk, which are disempowering, sabotaging and limiting.

As an adult, with 70% of the programs running in the subconscious being programs that do not support you, then it is difficult to develop empowering healthy relationships within yourself and with others.

We are programmed to label, judge, criticise ourselves and others. Starting a sentence with “YOU....” will almost always trigger a defensive subconscious response whereby the other person feels attacked in some way and responds accordingly.

Would you like to be empowered to change the way you speak to each other?Loving communication empowers yourself and your partner to take responsibility for communicating clearly about how you feel, what you think and what you need.

A few small changes in how you communicate with each other will change the outcome and is the difference between love or aggression.

A simple process of asking a question: “WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT ...?”; "WHAT ARE YOU FEELING...?; “WHY DID YOU DO...?” This enables your partner to take ownership of what is happening for them, it empowers him/her to decide how they are feeling, to share their thoughts and explain why they have chosen to act in a certain way.

By asking a question you have the opportunity to listen to the answer, to understand the information being provided and to make decisions based on the truth.

Each day practice asking a question, in place of making assumptions, judgements and criticisms and notice the difference in the responses you receive; notice you are now receiving positive responses in place of defensive reactions.

To learn more about how you can improve your connection in your relationships through loving communication visit www.heartconnection.com.au for upcoming local workshops. The days are getting shorter and the weather cooler, so now is a good time to start preparing yourself and your family for the winter colds and flu’s. a good way to do this is by including nourishing, warming, nutrient rich foods in your diet and complimenting with some supporting herbal teas and supplements.

A great way to enjoy nourishing foods is by making soups, stews and warm breakfasts and make sure to include foods like garlic (and lots of it). Garlic has a strong antioxidant action with the active ingredients alliin & allicin being released when garlic is crushed. It also contains amino acids, vitamins and minerals including vitamin C, vitamin E, iron and selenium, and is known to “reduce the incidence of colds and accelerate the rate of recovery compared to placebo”.1

Turmeric would also be a great spice to add to soups or curries. Curcumin, which is the active ingredient found in turmeric, has an antioxidant effect ten times more potent than Ascorbic Acid (vitamin C) or Resveratrol2. It’s great to add to a slow cooked meal as well!

Another good food option during the cooler months is porridge, with added barley, quinoa or spelt flakes. You can also try adding chia seeds, which are rich in antioxidants and Omega 3, which both support the immune system. Another great addition to porridge is cinnamon, a spice which has an antibacterial action. The main constituent of this spice is the essential oil component cinnamaldehyde, which produces most of the herb's biological effects3. Tip: Add honey when you have a sore throat for a great soothing combination.

Probiotic rich foods including kefir milk or yogurt, kim chi and kombucha are also good to have all year round. These help support your gut health by introducing beneficial bacteria, which can support your immune system, as many of your immune cells are found in your gut.

And why not compliment these fantastic food ideas by sipping on warm tea! Some immune boosting teas include lemon balm, which has antiviral properties, and licorice when you have a sore throat as it is soothing on mucous membranes and has an anti-viral action as well... It also tastes yummy!

For great health benefits and to ward off colds and flu, try Lemon Myrtle tea. Lemon Myrtle is a native Australia tree with a strong antioxidant effect and is used to treat colds and sore throats. Research has also shown it has antiviral properties4. Lemon myrtle is a good herb to enjoy as a tea when you have a sore throat and has a refreshing lemon flavour.

Call into Nelson Bay Health Foods to try our wide range of bulk loose leaf teas or packaged assorted teas, we often have tastings available. And last, but by no means least, one of the great “immune” herbs to keep close by for the onset of a cold is Echinacea. This herb has proven in studies to reduce the duration of an illness if taken at the first sign of infection. In one study 80 adults experiencing the first signs of a cold were treated with E.purpurea or placebo. The results revealed that the treatment with Echinacea shortened the duration of the illness by three days compared to placebo5. Another herb that has been used to support the immune system during winter is Astragalus which has been used to prevent colds and flu, fatigue and used during recovery after illness6. It is found in many herbal formulas along with other immune supporting herbs.

Please ask next time you visit Nelson Bay Health Foods for any further information including recipes, teas or wholefoods. Herbal consultation is also available which covers diet, symptoms and preventive options.

Many small business owners in Port Stephens are now enjoying the benefits of cloud accounting. as a result they are taking control

of their business finances, saving time and money and making better business decisions. We are all using “the cloud” in our day to day lives without even thinking about it. Facebook currently has 1.65 billion users and has changed the way we interact socially. On-line shopping and internet banking are other examples of how we use cloud technology on a daily basis.

How does it work? Why are so many businesses moving to cloud based software? Traditionally, accounting software is installed on your computer’s hard drive and your data is located on your physical computer. Using “cloud accounting” means there is no need to install software on your computer and your data is stored on a secured data server which can be accessed via the internet.

leT’S looK aT THe BeneFITS oF Cloud aCCounTInG

1 Your data is accessible anywhere, anytime on any device: With cloud accounting your data is stored on-line and can be accessed anytime you are connected to the internet via your computer, tablet or phone. Cloud software will even let you collaborate with many users including your bookkeeper or accountant, and your staff.

2 Save time: No more unnecessary manual data entry, your software connects to your bank account to bring in your bank transactions automatically so your data entry time is dramatically reduced.

3 Save money: No more upfront costs for accounting software, most software companies know that there is no “one size fits all” solution in small business. Subscriptions

are billed on a monthly basis with no lock in period, meaning your software can grow with your business.

4 Proactive not reactive: Business owners are able to make better business decisions as their accounts are in real time and up to date.

5 Improve cashflow: Invoicing can be done on the go using your phone which means you can get paid faster.

MyTH BuSTInG “THe Cloud” Before moving your business to the cloud it’s best to get all the facts, let’s help you bust some of the common myths.

1 Is my data safe? Your data may be safer on the cloud then on your desktop. Your computer can become corrupt or stolen easily, cloud software companies spend millions of dollars on ensuring the security of your data.

2 Is the cloud a fad? The cloud has been about for around 15 years and it’s only getting bigger and better as technology improves.

3 Is cloud accounting expensive? As you only pay for what you use the cloud can be much cheaper than traditional options as you won’t need to pay for hardware or software upgrades, worry about versions or updating files.

4 Who owns the data? You own the data and the software companies are required to keep your data safe (even if you decide to leave).

5 Can I backup my data to my local device? Yes, although not required you can export your data in various formats at any time.

If you feel that your business could benefit from cloud accounting software, please give The Business Organiser a call to book a free Xero Demo on 4981 0530 or check out our website at www.thebusinessorganiser.com.au.

Is your business profitable, fun and rewarding? or do you feel you are just scraping

through each month and asking yourself, “was I crazy thinking this small business gig was for me”?

Starting a business was going to give you a work/like balance, right? But are you lying awake at night asking yourself:

• how am I going to pay this week’s bill?

• how am I going to get everything done this week?

It started out fun...

Starting a small business is such an exciting time. Often, it symbolises the freedom to get out the rat race or to say goodbye to that cubicle job that was doing your head in. Bliss you thought …… being your own boss, charging those big fees or perhaps just a sea-change.

But what happened...

Some parts are still fun but you just feel overwhelmed. Quotes are now taking a week to get out, family time is getting eaten into and the final straw, your bookkeeping and taxes are falling behind. We are spoiled for choices when it comes to beaches here in Port Stephens and I want you to be feeling the beautiful

sand on your feet and not burying your head in it!

let’s get you back on track...

With a new financial year upon us, forget what’s happened in the past. It’s time to take action and get you back on track!

You will need a piece of paper & an open mind. Here are some ideas to get you started:

• what are your goals?

• should you increase your prices?

• should you drop an unprofitable service/product line or an unprofitable/unreasonable client?

• should you make staff changes?

• should you hire a bookkeeper?

• should you get a better record keeping system? (no shoe boxes allowed as there is something for every budget - manual tally sheets, spreadsheets, cloud based accounting software such as MYOB or Xero)

• should you re-engage with your accountant or find a new one that you are going to feel more comfortable with?

• should you be learning more about general bookkeeping, accounting and tax concepts so when you meet with your accountant, you will have more productive and valuable meetings?

The school holidays is the perfect time to get creative, entertain the kids and give your house a bit of a facelift. If you’re looking for something new this holidays, get creative with pebbles. yes pebbles! The small rocks that come in a myriad of colours and can be used in a surprising number of creative ways. From adding colour to your fish tank, adding texture to your pot plants or creating wealth bowls for prosperity and good luck, pebbles are incredibly versatile. The variety of colours and textures, encourage creativity, and provide school holiday activities that will keep the kids busy for days.

Anna Bay Sand & Earthmoving is your first port of call. They offer small, medium and large pebbles of different materials and colours. They are sold natural and clean meaning they can be used in fish tanks, without harm to any sea life. Alternatively, get into some DIY landscaping. Add pebbles to your pot plants or around your garden beds and garden paths. You’ll be surprised by how much difference such a simple step can make; your scenery will be instantly revitalised and you can keep the kids entertained throughout the process. Furthermore, you could take advantage of the fluorescent colours for indoor pockets of colour that liven up your home styling. For example, you could use them in the bottom of vases, or as Casandra from Anna Bay Sand & Earthmoving suggests, set up a bamboo vase using the pebbles as an intriguing foundation.

For the kids, the pebbles could be used to create mosaic pieces. Mosaic is the process of creating artworks using small materials like coloured glass or stones. If you have any old photo frames or mirrors, let the kids add their own touch by decorating the frames using the pebbles, ribbons, sequins and some craft glue.

There is also an entire discourse revolving around the use of pebbles in Feng Shui. Pebbles can be painted gold and used in wealth bowls, which encourage prosperity, wealth and good luck. They can be easily made using a variety of materials found around the house, in conjunction with the gold pebbles. If you want more information, the internet has a wide variety of material on the beliefs surrounding the practice. Generally families display them in open rooms, such as the lounge room, with the hope of stimulating income and opportunity. For some tips on how to make your own, check out: http://redlotusletter.com. Feng Shui also believes in creating wealth opportunities by stacking eight gold pebbles at your front door. You could alternatively add a silver layer with the gold to achieve a marbled look on your wealth pebbles1. The entire discourse is really quite interesting.

Who knew pebbles were so diverse? No matter your purpose, pebbles can be used to your advantage in a number of ways. Head out to Anna Bay Sand & Earthmoving and have a chat to their friendly staff. They are more than willing to help, and getting your hands on some pebbles may get your creativity flowing. This school holidays, revitalise your house or garden, keep the kids entertained with some mismatched, unique, photo frames, or explore Feng Shui. I guarantee you’ll be pleasantly surprised. 1 Erica. EatingIn

Tired of the same old, boring dinner? I was until I discovered this recipe and cooked the BeST chicken and green chile dish ever. Quick, easy and full of flavour! Warning: you'll be hooked!

Where do hungry and busy families go between school and extra-curricula activities when they're hungry? Sadly, it's fast food that permeates our lives. And soon, we're hooked on the fat laden meals controlling our diets. So why not make fast food fun, healthy, tasty and easy to create on a busy evening, whilst at the same time adding a little culture to your kitchen.

This Mexican inspired gourmet chicken dish ticks all the boxes.

There's something magical that occurs when the chicken meets the green chile and cheese. The flavors blend, becoming one. The fierceness of green chile gives way to a more pronounced statement of flavor, allowing the protein to come forward. Your family will love the flavours.

This gourmet meal can be accomplished in just thirty minutes.

The Greenhouse eatery is one of the region's newest dining out experiences, surrounded by the spectacular 135-hectare grounds of Pacific dunes in Medowie.

Head Chef, Sheldon Black, comes from a family of hospitality providers, with his parents owning and operating St. Mary Lodge and resort, situated near Glacier National Park in Montana, USA. Sheldon ventured to Australia through the wine industry, working at Arrowfield Estate in the Hunter Valley before establishing himself in the Port Stephens and Newcastle area as a head chef in a number of restaurants including Merewether Surf House, Shoal Bay Country Club, Newcastle Cruising Yacht Club and Grille 32.

With such a wide variety of experience and a passion for full, flavoursome food, it is no surprise that he has led such a successful career and inspired those around him.

Sheldon's menus are designed by the seasonality of the freshest, home-grown and local produce, allowing for the abundance of produce that is at its best and freshest to create dishes for diners to enjoy.

and enjoy we did!

My colleague, Trinette, and I arrived at The Greenhouse Eatery on a beautiful Autumn afternoon in May and from start to finish our experience was wonderful. The food, service and setting were fantastic and we were very well looked after by the attentive staff.

Upon arrival we were immediately met with smiles from staff who seated us at a window table, where we were able to take in the gorgeous views of the golf green and gardens. There is also the option to dine al fresco - ideal for a sunny winter day! The restaurant itself has a lovely clean and modern feel with a relaxed ambience. There is also the welcome addition of a beautiful double-sided fireplace, which lends a warm and homely feel - perfect to huddle around and have a natter with friends or family during the cooler months.

As the food was delivered to our table, our first impression was "wow". Our meals looked so inviting and the presentation was sophisticated with a generous serving. The combination of flavours had incredible depth and tasted exquisite.

I chose the Duck Salad, comprising seared duck breast, crumbled creamy light blue cheese, green beans, beetroot, baby heirloom carrots, fresh picked watercress & house made fig dressing. This dish was exceptionally tasty and great value for money at $17.

Trinette chose the Lamb Cous Cous, comprising slow cooked lamb tossed with pearl cous cous, braised leek, pancetta & spinach, topped with roast tomato & zucchini crisps. Another superb dish, priced at just $15.

The Greenhouse Eatery definitely has it all - lovely staff, great setting and fantastic food at very reasonable prices.

We would thoroughly recommend The Greenhouse as a fantastic option for breakfast, lunch or dinner with friends, family and loved ones. We will certainly be returning soon to sample more of Chef's divine cuisine.

stop Making These Three

We all know that children need parenting that sets them up for a positive and fulfilling future. When things go awry in the family unit, it's often a time when we question ourselves as parents and wonder where on earth we went wrong. I had one such moment recently, so I paused to consider where I was going wrong and how I could improve.

It's fair to say that we can only raise our children to the best of our ability, but sometimes there is room for improvement when it comes to our capability as parents. Our goal is not to ensure our children are compliant clones of ourselves, or to create cute little creatures that we can show off at every possible opportunity to better our peers. Instead we should strive to produce young adults who have a positive outlook and a potentially rewarding and happy future ahead of them.

With this in mind, here are three major parenting mistakes - which I admit to making to some degree - that we should try our best as parents to avoid:

XMISTaKe 1: Wrapping your children in cotton wool.

Every parent is, or should be, concerned about their child's safety, but over-protecting your child from just about every potential danger you can imagine

is not a good idea. Children develop important life skills by playing in an adventurous way, and enforcing safety-first rules on your children at every opportunity is neither needed nor healthy. Obviously, if your child is in immediate danger then step in quickly, but a bit of tree climbing action is great fun and provides a good challenge, with an opportunity for achievement

Parenting

and reward. Don't panic if your child insists on wearing a t-shirt and shorts on a Winter day, refuses the warm jumper, then ultimately complains they are cold. Being cold for a short time will not do any harm, and nor will being cold mean your child catches a cold - that one is a myth. It will also mean that next time, he/she may actually agree to wearing a jumper or jacket! A scraped knee here and there, a bruise or a cut, wet feet from not wearing the correct footwear in the rain - the list could go on and on forever. No long-term damage is done, but a crucial little lesson in life is learned each time. It is extremely important that our children learn how to take care of themselves, and you should encourage this without being neglectful.

XMISTaKe 2: Thinking for your children.

Little Sally is very polite. Sally always says, "Thank you", when it is pertinent to do so. Unfortunately, Sally never gets a chance to say

the words of her own accord because her Mum always commands her to say them. Sally's Mum, understandably, wants her daughter to demonstrate good manners, but she does not realize that she is having a negative impact on a vital part of Sally's development - the ability to make decisions. Children learn through repetition and consistency. Being polite and demonstrating good manners will lead to your child learning to do the same. Telling your child, "Say thank you", every time it is appropriate takes away some of your child's ability to think for herself. It is far better to give children room to think and decide for themselves, with a few mistakes along the way, than it is to stifle their decision-making capabilities.

XMISTaKe 3: letting television raise your children.

Television and media is a hugely influential part of our lives that has a massive impact on our choices, decisions, and behavior, and those of our

children. There are many programmes that teach our children good moral standpoints, but even these can be polluted with dangerous messages. Popular shows often tell our children to laugh at the unfortunate kid with the funny hair style, or to delight in the misery of the girl who looks or acts different to what is considered normal, and has no friends because of this. Television teaches our children that the bad guy usually looks like a stereotypical bad guy. It demonstrates to our kids that laughing at the misfortune of others is acceptable and to be encouraged. Some cartoons are ultra-violent and fail to show the destructive after-affects of violent behavior. Parents spend a lot of time educating their children to be helpful to those in need, and sensitive to the plight of others. Television often teaches our children to point and laugh when somebody falls over, and that is irresponsible and unforgivable.

It's a rocky road to success, and no parent will ever get everything right, I certainly am not mother of the year! But knowing the potential damage that seemingly harmless parenting has on a child's welfare is a great step in the right direction. Learning new skills and techniques is a very important part of raising happy, healthy children, as is adapting your methods to allow for the mistakes that we all make.

Education

Many students in the Bay are now experiencing how fun Science can be. They are participating in Science Clubs on Wednesday night or on Saturday mornings, or they have participated in the Vacation Science experiences provided by Tutoring at the Bay.

In 2016 STEM means creating learning environments that allow students to explore by physically taking part in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math. It means getting children active and becoming engaged in their own learning. Students remember more when they are engaged in the process and not just passive onlookers.

So why not encourage their interest in Science at an early age and join them up for an experience they could get hooked on.

To find out more and book a class, call suellen on 0407 341 610.

make math count

Jobs specialising in STeM (Science, Technology, engineering and Math) are some of the most exciting and well paid1. So why are the majority of students dropping math before the HSC?2

Parents agree STEM subjects are important and are keen to help their kids succeed. However much has changed; homework can now involve everything from using Google to coding you own website! Algebra may have also got a little fuzzy for most parents.

Kids want to improve but can get frustrated when they don’t know where to start. Trying to help our kids with difficult subjects can lead to much angst at the kitchen table.

The language of science is math. Many students drop math due to early gaps in understanding that prevent new learning. For example, a student may receive 60% for test on fractions, but the class simply moves on. This is a problem because math requires mastery of each topic before the next one can be understood.

Gaps widen until the HSC when marks and time are critical. Dropping math then becomes a rational choice. In my experience, this pattern will often exclude capable students from accessing STEM courses at university.

Here is the good news. Educational experts agree that individually tailored, task based feedback and social learning improves results3.

Try these steps to support your child’s learning:

1 Educate yourself first! Read the syllabus online4. This will explain precisely what students need to learn.

2 Revise text books, homework and past exams and ask the teacher to identify gaps and provide feedback.

3 Consider your child’s personality, strengths, interests and dreams. What do they find engaging about STEM?

4 Identify their motivation for learning. What do they hope to get out of the subject and what level of achievement do they need?

5 Now set goals together. Be specific and realistic. What mark is needed and when? What tasks will they do to reach their goal? How much extra time and effort per week is needed?

6 Communicate your child’s goal to the teacher so you can all work as a team to monitor and revise progress.

7 Do you need help from others?

Social learning means involving peers and qualified support workers. Research these options online for your local area:

• Homework Clubs; Tutoring; Community Education initiatives like Makers Spaces, Youth Groups; Peer Mentors.

I have applied this approach to all my students for over 18 years and all have improved. It works by empowering students to take responsibility for their own learning. The most successful people are independent learners who always try to improve their performance.

Motivation and engagement are essential for learning. Social learning peaks motivation and can involve peers and qualified support workers. Look online or ask around for a local tutor who can come to your home. A more affordable option may be a supervised homework club in your local area.

Another exciting opportunity exists in Makers or Hackerspaces. Students can work on particularly messy group projects like building a robot for competition5. Such initiatives demonstrate that STEM is hands on, fun and creative.

To have the best shot in the age of innovation, kids may just need an extra boost in maths when it really counts!
