ASSISTIVE TECHNOLOGIES AT VPL

Greetings fromMichael McKenzie Chair, Vaughan Public Library Board

Welcome to the latest issue of What’sOn. In this edition I would like to take a moment to thank all employees of Vaughan Public Libraries (VPL) for their contribution to the delivery of VPL programs and services. A look back at our 2012 statistics reveals that we had record program attendance at 98,265. at is almost equal to every third person in the City of Vaughan attending a VPL program in 2012! We also circulated over 2.8 million items and recorded 2.2 million in-person or digital visits. e achievement of these numbers would not be possible without the hard work and dedication of all VPL employees. On behalf of the Board and the citizens of Vaughan, I would like to extend a sincere ank You to all VPL sta. I would also like to recognize the contributions of our 2012 Bronze Award recipients. Over 60 sta members were nominated by their peers for initiatives that were recognized with Bronze Awards. We applaud the achievements of our Bronze Award recipients and hope that through the eorts of our sta, we are able to inspire you to discover new opportunities to Enrich Inspire Transform.

Takes the Train

A NOVEL

fter decades of service and years of watching her family’s trou-bles splashed across the tabloids, Britain’s Queen is beginning

to feel her age. She needs some cheering up and decides to visit Britan-nia, the former royal yacht now anchored near Edinburgh and the site of many happy memories. Hidden beneath a hoodie, Elizabeth walks out of Buckingham Palace and heads for a public train at King’s Cross. But a characterful cast of royal attendants has discovered her missing. In uneasy alliance a lady-in-waiting, a butler, an equerry, a girl from the stables, a dresser, and a clerk from the shop that serves Her Majesty’s cheese set out to find her and bring her back before her absence becomes a national scandal.

Comic and poignant, fast paced and clever, Mrs Queen Takes the Train is a delightful debut novel that tweaks the pomp of the British monarchy, going beneath its rigid formality to reveal the human heart of the woman at its center.

Will iam Kuhn is a biographer and historian, and the author, most recently, of Reading Jackie, a look at the personality of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis through the books she chose to edit at Viking and Doubleday. He has written three previous books: Democratic Royal-ism; Henry and Mary Ponsonby, a double biography of two key people at the court of Queen Victoria; and The Politics of Pleasure, a life of Britain’s most royalist prime minister, Benjamin Disraeli. He lives in Boston, Massachusetts. This is his first novel.

Teen Summer Reading Challenge (TSRC) Returns!

e TSRC is now in its fourth year at Vaughan Public Libraries, and YOU, the teens of Vaughan, continue to beat the challenge! at means that WE, the librarians, have been le with no choice but to up the ante. Soooo, this summer, we challenge YOU, the teens of Vaughan ages 13 to 18, to read….

ONE MILLION PAGES!

So to clarify, that doesn’t mean you alone have to read 1,000,000 pages… no no no… it means that ALL teens in Vaughan must collectively read 1,000,000 pages. Got it? Oh, and if you beat THIS challenge, WE, the librarians will dress up for an entire week in a fashion that YOU choose! But that’s not all...

Want to win a Kobo Arc? If you are the top reader in Vaughan, you will win your very own Kobo Arc! ere will also be prizes for the second and third place winners!

How do you participate?Visit www.vaughanpl.info to register for the TSRC. Create an account, and every time you read a book over the summer log onto the TSRC site to enter the title and number of pages you’ve read.

Still not enough?See how much of a bookworm you are with our Book Trivia and Guess the Cover contests!

Did we mention there would be prizes for both of these contests? Watch for more details on these great contests at www.vaughanpl.info and on VPL’s Teen Vortex.

All contests start Monday, July 1 and end Sunday, August 11, 2013. Winners will be notied by August 31, 2013.
