Under current health and safety requirements,every employer has a duty of care to make surethat their employees are safe at work, and thatmeans being safe from the dangers posed by their colleagues as much as by machinery or processes.As a result, more and more organisations arerealising that the only way to verify the safety oftheir environment is to add drugs and alcoholtesting to their existing health and safety programme.

Influences of alcohol and drugs

It is a sobering thought, but the use of drugs and alcohol has grown significantly over recent years, and is now having a substantial effect ontoday’s workplace.

Often resulting in severe financial loss, not tomention lost hours due to sickness and absencefrom work, the use of drugs and alcohol can alsolead to injury and serious accidents. Statisticshave shown that regular users of drugs or alcoholare more likely to take sick leave, can be lessproductive, are often late and are more likely to be absent on a regular basis.

Ask anyone who has drunk alcohol or taken drugs, and they will tell you that it canappear to be liberating. Lowering inhibitions and temporarily raising confidence, it can also dampen the senses, diminish concentration and dull the reflexes.

Any of these effects are likely to be unwelcome ata place of work. In general terms, the signs of misuse will include sudden mood changes, unusual irritability or aggression, a tendency tobecome confused, abnormal fluctuations in concentration and energy, and generally impairedjob performance. Poor timekeeping may also provide a clue, as could increased short-term sickness absence, a deterioration in relationshipswith colleagues, customers or management, anddishonesty and theft as a result of the need tomaintain such an expensive habit.

EFFECTS OF ALCOHOL

As surprising as it may seem, a blood-alcoholincrease of just 0.02%, i.e. a bottle of beer or aglass of wine, can produce significant changes in awareness and capabilities. Our perception of moving objects and light sources isimpaired, and the difficulties become even more acute in poor light conditions, if we are tired or are taking medication. The readiness totake risks increases at blood-alcohol levels of0.03%, and vision can be limited to such an extentthat tunnel vision can be experienced, and objectsmight appear to be further away than they actuallyare. Coordination is impaired, and any balance disorders might increase to the point of staggering.Speech may become slurred, and night vision canbe severely restricted. As well as changes to personality, increased confidence can lead toexaggerated acts and over-exuberance. From0.05%, reflexes become much slower, vision is further impaired and speed cannot be judgedaccurately. Alertness decreases massively at 0.08%, and reactions are usually either exaggerated,

incorrect or completely inappropriate. Imminentdanger may be recognised too late, and, as well as the inability to think clearly and move properly,the consumption of more alcohol may even lead to unconsciousness.

EFFECTS OF DRUGS

Different drugs affect different people in many ways,and the effects can last for hours or even days.People who have taken drugs at the weekend, forinstance, are often unaware that they can still beaffected several days afterwards – including whilstat work. The use of cannabis, for instance, canslow reactions and affect concentration and coordination. It can also produce a sedative-likeeffect, causing fatigue. As well as causing erraticbehaviour, cocaine can increase confidence andlead people to taking risks that they would not usually contemplate. Sometimes, the after-effectsmight resemble flu, with the person feeling lethargic and lacking in concentration. Over-confidence and risk-taking is also associated withecstasy, which makes the heart beat faster. LSD, however, can speed up or slow down timeand movement, whilst distorting colour, sound andobjects. As well as feeling panicky and confused,users often see objects that are not really there at all. Amphetamines such as speed can makepeople feel wide awake and excited to such anextent that they find it difficult to sit still, and havedifficulty sleeping. Unfortunately, drug and/or alcohol misusers do not conform to any particularstereotype. With such a wide variety of symptoms,it can be very hard for employers to recognise specific problems unless appropriate controlmeasures, such as drugs and alcohol testing, are put into place.

Quickly and easily fitted to any vehicle or machine, the Dräger Interlock is a breath-alcohol measuring instrument that includes a vehicle immobiliser or machinery start protection. Requiring drivers or operators to provide a breath-alcohol sample, it prohibits anyone who has consumed alcohol from starting vehicles or machines. Able to help reduce accidents caused by alcohol consumption, it can also be used to promote long-term changes in drinking attitudes.
