2019-2020 JDS ANNUAL REPORT

Page 2: WHERE CURIOSITY LEADS TO DISCOVERY

JDS’s fortieth school year was highly unexpected, as we say at JDS.

In March our students and staff departed the classrooms and campus to finish out the school year from their bedrooms and dining room tables. It was a major challenge,

requiring new skills and new devices, flexible mindsets and buckets of patience.

Everything needed to be reinvented. All classes for all grades, Early Childhood through Middle School, Hebrew to Science, went fully online. With just two weeks before the JDS Auction & Gala, we pivoted to an online event, and were humbled by the generous support of our extended community in exceeding our fundraising goals. There was loss. For only the second time in JDS history, our 8th Graders did not travel with their peers to Israel.

And yet we met those challenges and the ruach of JDS prevailed. Our Grandparents and Special Friends Day went on, drawing people from all over the world to join our tradition of Sharing Circles remotely. Our 8th Grade Zoom Graduation was a more intimate and accessible experience for our graduates, their extended families, and our whole community. Our teachers reported that online school, though separating us physically, to their surprise, deepened the connections between the students.

In this Annual Report, we share our transition to online school and a virtual auction. And most important, we share the connections of multiple generations of families to our beloved school, that continue to support JDS, ensuring a thriving Jewish community in our region.

As we plan for our next 40 years and beyond, we are cultivating the evolution of JDS by seeking a new location for our campus. With a landing date between 2024 and 2026, we are excited for a new home and partnership that will propel JDS to further our reach and mission. We are grateful to our extended community, and each one of you, for your part in this meaningful and essential work.

Todah Rabah,

Vivian Scheidt, Head of School

MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL MESSAGE FROM THE BOARD PRESIDENT

2019-20 culminated 40 years for JDS. We are 40 years strong because of the commitment and dedication of our families, our amazing Head of School, administration, faculty, staff, Board

of Trustees and each and every one of you. It is this unwavering commitment and dedication that has continued to drive us through these unprecedented times.

As a newly minted alumni parent, I am honored to serve in the role of Board President for our beloved school. After 12 years, our daughter Maia completed her JDS journey, graduating this past June. Throughout that time, JDS served as our family’s primary Jewish community. Over those years we made deep connections — connections which will last a lifetime. As a Trustee, those connections continue, and I join an extended community of alumni families dedicated to ensuring a vibrant JDS for years to come.

I am pleased to share with you the successes of 2019-20 in this Annual Report. Over this past year, our administration and faculty achieved great success with a pivot to online school, and our community rallied in support. Our Board of Trustees continued the strategic work of planning for a new location in 2024-26 that will enable us to grow and thrive and continue to serve our community for the next 40 years.

I thank you for your part in ensuring the longevity of JDS. Your generous support makes it possible for JDS to continue to deliver a first-class education to our students, while immersed in an environment of joyful Jewish life, learning, and values. JDS is more than a school — it’s a community. And now more than ever, we need community.

Todah Rabah,

Heather Lader, President, JDS Board of Trustees

SPOTLIGHT: ENSURING CONTINUITYJDS successfully pivoted to online learning for all grades when the Governor’s Executive Order came in March. We committed to making sure the learning continued and our students stayed connected to their teachers, classmates, and community. Thankfully, we had invested in the technology infrastructure. At the start of the year, we expanded our one-to-one electronic device program to the primary grades, ensuring that every student from Kindergarten through 8th grade had their very own laptop or iPad for learning. We invested in an online learning platform for the elementary grades to communicate content in a method similar to that in Middle School. When the pandemic moved our learning online, the teachers took quick action. They set up online classrooms and taught the students how to

independently navigate them. They worked as a team to learn and adopt best practices for virtual instruction. They dedicated time to checking in with their students and families, supporting the social and emotional needs of the community. Graduation was the culmination of the year, celebrating and acknowledging how the pandemic and move to online classes brought the students and teachers even closer together.

The highlight of the 2020 auction was the Rosen family’s leadership gift and their inspiration of others to support JDS. We asked Michele and Stan, Mimi and Nathan, and Leslie to share the backstory of their dedication to JDS.

Your family was instrumental in establishing JDS and the school property. Can you tell us about that?

Michele: Carol Starin, Maria Erlitz, and Sharon Finegold said we are starting this new school, we think you might be interested. So, I sent Mimi to JDS and then later Leslie and Jack. I really began to understand what a community JDS was, not just for the kids but for the whole family. We made some really deep connections, as did our children. Some of those connections are lifelong connections that have lasted to this day.

Stan: Over 35 years ago we bought the school from Bellevue School District. The school had been surplused, so my dad Herb Rosen stepped in and we had to raise the money to acquire it. We put together 10 families who bought the school. The person I negotiated with was Daniel Hinds, who was vice principal when I was expelled from Bellevue High School, so when I got to negotiate with him for the property, there was this connection.

Your family is still critical to ensuring that JDS continues. Why?

Michele: We’re talking about four generations of involvement now, a long history for JDS. We can’t get it out of our blood. It’s absolutely part of our being. When I see how my children and grandchildren are treated and have become members of the JDS family, I want to see that legacy continue for other people, not just for my family. I believe that JDS is important upstream work. It creates community, it emphasizes our values, which I think are pretty terrific, and it develops leadership.

Why did you make a legacy gift last year?

Mimi: I believe in JDS and the future of JDS. When we were touring preschools for Sadie, Nathan and I felt like JDS was a loving and nurturing home. I wanted my kids to not only learn a lot but also to be loved.

WHY WE SUPPORT JDS

I truly believe in the moral compass and values they are taught and explore. That exploration piece that creates upstanders, it starts at the Kindergarten level and meets them where they are.

They are so prepared for their next steps academically. In high school this year, Sadie has been on the High Honor Roll at SAAS. I know that part of the strength of JDS is the teachers. They care and work so hard. They are quality, high level teachers.

Leslie: I got a great education at JDS and more importantly I’ve seen what it’s done for my nieces. They are loved and they love it there. What I really love about JDS is it offers the base for who you want to be, who you want your kids to be.

Why do you serve on the JDS board?

Nathan: I really wanted to figure out how I could be involved in their school experience in a positive way. I remember how I was in school, how I didn’t get much out of the experience, and I hear and see how much they love JDS and what makes it a great place for them.

What is your hope for the future of JDS?

Michele: I hope that JDS is integrated more into the general Jewish community and collaborates with other stellar Jewish organizations.

Nathan: I want the school to keep growing so we can transform the villages and school to something great for the community.

Mimi: Years ago, I was told that some 90% of our Jewish leaders are day school educated, and I can see it firsthand. JDS creates leaders, and I want that legacy to grow.
