Presentation House Theatre believes that professional theatre is for everyone. Every show we present or produce will be of the highest professional standard while also appealing to the diversity of the North Shore. We are proud to offer programming for children and youth, adults young and old, the music aficionado and the innovative and emerging dancers.
Welcome to Where The Wild Things Are. This project started in 2000 with a trip to Scotland when I met Jon Morgan of TAG Theatre in Glasgow. The company had received permission from Maurice Sendak to do an intimate, guided play experience based on his book for about 20 children at a time. The ingenious way in for the project was created by Carol Healas. I was very impressed with the concept and wrote Maurice to see if we could do a similar thing in Canada. Maurice very generously gave us permission but only if it remained intimate and true to the spirit of a guided play experience. Unfortunately, I never got a chance to speak with Carol about her concept, as she had passed away by the time we received permission and began working on the show. I adapted the TAG adaptation, with their permission, and made it more of a play for adults and children alike. This will be its third production. It has toured Canada and travelled twice to Japan. I am ever grateful to Carol Healas and the team at TAG for their work with the very young. Maurice had a special understanding of the world of the child. This play touches that place in all of us. I hope you enjoy letting your Wild Thing out today!
Kim Selody, Artistic Director of Presentation House Theatre
*Please note: This is a participation play and so there will be times when the children are asked to make noises and perform actions. Prior to the performance, discuss with them the difference between moments of participation and times when they need to be quiet and listen to the actors.

For Discussion After the Play• What makes you frustrated and angry?
• How can your imagination help you to escape scary or unpleasant experiences?
• What turns you into a Wild Thing?
• Can happy events also turn you into a Wild Thing? Explain.
• In what ways were the monsters similar? In what ways were they different?
• What are some ways we all thought of to tame the monsters? Can we think of other ideas?
• Why is it helpful to think of taming methods that don’t rely on other people?
• Can we tame our own “inner monsters” by using similar strategies?
