Riesling

Riesling is a white grape variety which originated in the Rhine region of Germany. Riesling is an aromatic grape variety displaying flowery, almost perfumed, aromas as well as high acidity.

In terms of importance for quality wines, it is usually included in the “top three” white wine varieties together with Chardonnay and Sauvignon blanc. Riesling is a variety which is highly “terroir-expressive”, meaning that the character of Riesling wines is greatly influenced by the wine’s place of origin.

Albarino

Albariño is a high-quality, light-bodied white wine that grows primarily in Spain and Portugal. It’s loved for its high acidity, refreshing citrus flavors, dry taste, and subtle saltiness. For seafood lovers, Albariño is a fantastic choice for food pairing with exquisite dishes like ceviche, fish tacos, seafood pasta, and shrimp.

Chenin Blanc

Chenin Blanc is grown throughout the world, most notably in the Loire Valley of France and South Africa. What’s amazing about this variety is the diversity of styles, from sparkling wines and lean, dry whites to sweet, golden nectars and even fine brandy.

“A bottle of wine begs to be shared; I have never met a miserly wine lover.”

Clifton Fadiman

Sauvignon Blanc

Depending on the climate, the flavour can range from aggressively grassy to sweetly tropical. In cooler climates, the grape has a tendency to produce wines with noticeable acidity and “green flavours” of grass, green bell peppers and nettles with some tropical fruit (such as passion fruit) and floral (such as elderflower) notes. In warmer climates, it can develop more tropical fruit notes but risk losing a lot of aromatics from over-ripeness, leaving only slight grapefruit and tree fruit (such as peach) notes.

Chardonnay

Chardonnay is the “Big Daddy” of white wine grapes and one of the most widely planted in the world. It is suited to a wide variety of soils, though it excels in soils with a high limestone content as found in Champagne, Chablis, and the Côte D`Or.

Burgundy is Chardonnay’s spiritual home and the best White Burgundies are dry, rich, honeyed wines with marvellous poise, elegance and balance. They are unquestionably the finest dry white wines in the world. Chardonnay plays a crucial role in the Champagne blend, providing structure and finesse, and is the sole grape in Blanc de Blancs.

Montepulciano

Montepulciano is a medium-bodied red wine grape that is supposed to have originated in central Italy. Montepulciano wines are commonly confused with Vino Nobile de Montepulciano, a regional name for the Sangiovese-based wine in Tuscany.

Rioja Reserva

Selected wines of the best vintages with an excellent potential that have been aged for a minimum of 3 years, with at least one year in casks. For white wines, the minimum aging period is 2 years, with at least 6 months in casks.

“Age appears best in four things: old wood to burn, old wine to drink, old friends to trust, and old authors to read.”

Francis Bacon

Chateauneuf-du-Pape

In most red Châteauneuf-du-Pape wines, Grenache Noir is the most common grape variety, although some producers use a higher proportion of Mourvèdre. Grenache produces a sweet juice that can have almost a jam-like consistency when very ripe. Syrah (Shiraz) is typically blended to provide colour and spice, while Mourvèdre can add elegance and structure to the wine.

Amarone

Grapes are harvested ripe in the first two weeks of October, by carefully choosing bunches having fruits not too close to each other, to let the air flow. Grapes are allowed to dry, traditionally on straw mats. This process is called appassimento or rasinate (to dry and shrivel) in Italian. This concentrates the remaining sugars and flavours and is similar to the production of French Vin de Paille. The pomace left over from pressing off the Amarone is used in the production of Ripasso Valpolicellas.

Red Wines Bottle

52 G.Lonardi, Valpolicella Ripasso, Italy 43.00 After autumn fermentation, this wine is re-fermented in the spring by adding partially-dried Amarone skins to the blend, after which it spends up to 18 months in oak. The result is an immensely rich, complex wine dominated by flavours of sour cherry, liquorice and chocolate.

53 Les Galets, Châteauneuf-du-Pape, France 2016 45.00 A lighter Châteauneuf with ripe fruit and notes of spice and herbs on the nose, this blend of Grenache, Syrah and Mourvedre grapes has good depth and a soft, elegant palate.

La Croix Blanche

On the southern side of the Beaune-Pommard road is La Croix Blanche; immediately across the way is the Premier Cru Grands Epenots, no more than five metres distant – such are the vagaries of vineyard boundaries, which would explain why La Croix Blanche has a reputation as one of the top lieux dits in Pommard.

Mont Rochelle Sir Richard Branson

Sir Richard Branson’s vineyards are situated between 250m and 400m above sea level exposing the grapes to a range of micro climates. Mediterranean-like conditions found in the Western Cape mean dry summers and high winter rainfalls of 1000mm. The Franschhoek Valley also experiences the south-easter which helps bring in cooler air allowing for a longer ripening period.

English Sparkling Wine

English wine is growing in popularity and is increasingly recognised as a premium wine producing region, with approximately 1,800ha of land under vine, more than 450 vineyards and around 3.2m bottles being produced every year. English sparkling wine specifically has been highly praised for its quality, beating Champagne in competitions.

Prosecco

Prosecco is the Italian sparkling wine produced in the regions of Veneto and Friuli Venezia Giulia, traditionally mainly around Conegliano and Valdobbiadene, in the hills north of Treviso. It is predominantly made from Glera grapes, formerly known also as Prosecco, but other grape varieties such as Bianchetta Trevigiana may be included.Prosecco flavours are fruity and flowery and as the wines are produced in large tanks with less pressure, the bubbles are light. Finer Prosecco wines often exhibit notes of tropical fruits, banana cream, hazelnut, vanilla and honeycomb.
