A Wine Legacy Built By Family HandsThe Delheim farm today stands on soil where some of the very first vines of the Stellenbosch Wine Route were planted three centuries ago. The farm has deep German roots, being most associated with the pioneering Michael “Spatz” Sperling who made his way to South Africa from Germany after World War II. Untrained, but finding his calling as a winemaker, Sperling rapidly learned from books, neighbourly advice and the wisdom of experienced German winemakers who came out to visit Delheim. Sperling soon became one of the area’s top wine producers and eventually founded the now iconic Stellenbosch Wine Route.
