THE RICH MAN AND LAZARUS

“Walang sino man ang nabubuhay parasa sarili lamang. Walang sino man angnamamatay para sa sarili lamang.Tayong lahat ay may pananagutan saisa’t isa…” This song which is full ofmeaning challenges us to care for otherpeople especially those who have lessin life.

In the time of our Lord Jesus there weremany people who were rich and so hadpower and prestige and among themwere the religious leaders like the Phari-sees and the Sadducees. Jesus saw thatmost of them were indifferent to thesepeople, having no compassion and carefor them. They even oppressed and ex-ploited them. They did not listen to Hiswords much less believed in them. Theydid not believe in Him despite the manysigns and wonder. He had made likewhen He brought His friend Lazarus backto life. Their hearts were hardened. Inlight of this situation prevailing in Histime where the rich did not have a heartfor the poor Jesus gave a story which istold in today’s Gospel.

Here there are two men one is rich andthe other is poor. The rich man, dressedin fine and elegant clothes, holds a partyor feast each day. He drinks and eatssumptuous food. He is having a goodtime everyday big-time people in Jew-ish society who come to visit him. Yes,he lives in prosperity and luxury. It isnot known whether he was born to thepurple but what is crystal-clear is thathe is as rich as Croesus.

What about the poor man named Lazaruson the other hand? Well he is there out-side the rich man’s gate lying and yearn-ing to eat the crumbs that fall from histable. Adding insult to injury, dogs who

are dirty animals would come each dayto lick his sores. Viewed in another way,these animals are much better for theycome to sympathize with him whereasthis rich man in the midst of his abun-dance miserably fails to do what he issupposed to do as a human being. Hedoes not feel for this poor man Lazarus.

By the way the rich man has no namehere whereas the poor man has. Jesusapparently fails to name him. This onlytells us that before God the big nameshere in this world do not matter a wholelot but the poor.

This two men, separated by an economicchasm or divide, eventually die. In theaftermath of their death, however, a dra-matic reversal of fortune or situationoccurs. The poor man Lazarus is takenup by angels to heaven to be withAbraham whereas the rich man findshimself in the netherworld to be in eter-nal torment. This only tells us of the sur-vival of the souls after death and the ret-ribution to come.

This wealthy man looks up and much tohis surprise he sees Lazarus withAbraham. Then he asks him to tellLazarus to dip his finger in the water andto send him to him that he may touch histongue to quench his thirst. “No puedefor there is a big gap separating us,”Abraham tells him. The great gap be-tween him and Lazarus continues in thelife after. He also asks Abraham to sendLazarus to his family in which he has fivebrothers to warn them. This means thatthey are doing the same thing which hewas doing while still alive. Abraham re-plies: “No need for they will always haveMoses and the prophets to make themlisten to them. If they will not, even ifone rises from the dead still they willnot believe.”

This means that his brothers have hard-ened hearts like his own.

But why is this rich man up there inhell to suffer eternal damnation? Sureenough he has not done anything in-trinsically bad to the poor man, has he?

Neither did he scold and insult him norcall his dogs to run him out of his turf.But why the condemnation for this manof affluence? Surely he was con-demned for turning a blind eye or hisbeing oblivious to the plight ofLazarus, not giving him anything toappease his hunger, to satiate his thirst,and to cure his sores.

He did fail to lift a finger to him from thevalley of gloom and neglect to the sun-lit path of joyful and hopeful existence.

The rich man was condemned not forhis riches which are not intrinsicallyevil but for the sin of omission whichhe had committed.

He had resources but he did not help.He could help but he failed to do so.It is not enough for one to be goodby refraining from doing somethingevil but one has to be good doingsomething beneficial.

It is not mentioned whether this rich manwas corrupt or dishonest, if he was in-volved in the broad band deal, the HelloGarci controversy, or in the fertilizerscam. Most probably he is rich becausehe was born with a silver spoon in hismouth or through hard work and perse-verance. His greatest sin was that hefailed to do what he should have done.He was so focused on his wealth that hebecame uncaring, selfish, uncharitable,indifferent, insensitive and inhuman.One who is attached too much to hiswealth is in no need of conversion for itwill mean altering his own lifestyle.

The Gospel is not just meant to consolethe poor, assuring them that their diffi-culties and suffering here on earth willbe rewarded but also to warn the richwho shut their eyes on the misery ofother people. This is an indictment tothose who rely too much on themselvesand their wealth so that they recognizeno other God in their lives. If we haveno God in our life, we tend to be selfish,concerned only with our own interestand unable to seek out of the window tosee who are other people out there. Thisis so because we’ve got everything in ourhands. Others are but non-existing orare just decorations in our life.

One who is selfish puts his trust in hiswealth which is but idolatry accordingto St. Paul. He says that love of moneyis the root of all evil. It carries the dan-ger of dislodging God who is the true andeverlasting wealth.

The challenge is for the rich to have thatevangelical poverty which means thatthey should have that detachment fromtheir wealth. The poor have the powerto send them to hell if they fail to helpthem. Indeed God did not make it diffi-cult for the rich to attain salvation forthey have only to share what they havein their hands.

The poor are their way to heaven. Sal-vation is not contingent on the amountof wealth which one accumulates but onhow he who has more in life shares withthose who have less in life.

Of course all of us who have been ma-terially blessed have a moral and so-cial responsibility. To whom much isgiven much is also expected or re-quired. Through our generous acts wecan help to bridge or narrow the gapbetween the rich and the poor which isnot in accord with His will. Yes, we areall our brothers’ keepers.
