FOCUS - SEPTEMBER 2009 11 Only two years after receiving open heart surgery, it appears as if Glenn Van Camp’s heart can handle almost any kind of excitement. And proof of his regained health came during a ‘heart-thumping’ finish at the Maple Leaf Trot last month in which his five-year old gelding, San Pail, pulled an upset victory in the lucrative $720,500 race, edging out the reigning champion by a neck. It was Glenn’s wife Donna, who reminded him following the race that it was two years ago, to-the- day, that he was lying on his back in a Toronto hospital undergoing life-saving heart surgery. Today Glenn sports a big smile when announcing doctors have given the 75 year-old a clean bill of health. Glenn described the recent Maple Leat Trot win as a “thrill of a lifetime” especially since San Pail had been picked to place third. “Even that placing (third) was an honour,” the long- time horse breeder and trainer said. While Glenn’s interests in horses began about 30 years ago, Donna’s side of the family has been involved in raising and racing horses for as long as she can re- member. “My grandfather, father and broth- ers were all breeders, drivers and trainers. Horse racing was a real family affair,” she recalled, adding that she never really took a liking to horses until recently. Glenn’s first foray into raising horses came in the mid-1980s but it wasn’t until almost a decade later he experienced success on the track. “I always liked horses and I get a lot of enjoy- ment out of being involved,” Glenn says, while admitting he’s been lucky that his ‘hobby’ has been quite successful. “The first good horse I owned was Tantalon Celtic, which I bought as a ‘Father’s Day’ present to myself,” Glenn said with a big smile. Years later, with $6,500 in hand, Glenn purchased Randy Waples is seen at left guiding San Pail, to a win over reigning Maple Leaf Trot champion Arch Madness and favourite Lucky Jim. It was San Pail’s 19th career win for trainer Rodney Hughes, who owns a piece of the horse with the Ontario-bred’s breeder Glenn Van Camp of Port Perry, seen here holding the Maple Leaf Trot trophy. here we go again Canada Post, in response to rising cost pres-sures has announced its intention to increase the domestic basic letter rate for letters weighing 30 grams or less to 57 cents beginning January 2010. But the proposal doesn’t stop there. In addition to the three cent increase this January, the cost of stamps would rise by an ad-ditional two cents per year from 2011 to 2014 bringing the cost to send a letter at the end of five years to 65 cents. The ‘credit card’ was invented back in the 1950s although it didn’t become very popular until about 30 years later. But today the credit card is entrenched so deeply in our system it has become the most accepted way to pay for goods and services. But not at the Scugog Town-ship office where credit cards are not an accepted way of pay-ment for anything. The reason being provided, is the cost to the credit card company. Federal and provincial government agencies, such as the Ontario Ministry of Transportation and the Port Perry Post Office both accept credit card payments for their services, so we have to ask, why not our lo-cal government? A study released last month says that using a cellphone, particularly for sending or receiving text messages, puts a driver of a vehicle at 23 times more risk of getting into an accident. The study by the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute (VTTI) says text messaging forces the driver’s eyes away from the road for about 4.6 seconds over a six-second interval - the equivalent of travelling the length of a football field at 55 mph (approx. 90 km) without looking at the roadway. 18 FOCUS - SEPTEMBER 2009

Thumbs Up - to our energetic and hard working MP John O’Toole, for his recent appointment to the position of ‘opposition critic’ for the Ministry of Government Ser-vices in Ontario’s new shadow cabinet. The shadow

cabinet was put together by new Ontario Progressive Con-servative leader Tim Hudak. John is well known in Scugog and is a tireless worker for his party. Congrats John.

Thumbs Down - to a recent decision by council to charge business owners and employees along North St. a parking fee to use the township parking lot at the rear of their establishments. Property owners have always

provided free parking for staff and customers in the down-town, so it’s hard to understand why the township feels compelled to charge. This will only encourage staff to find free parking elsewhere, clogging already conjested lots. Free parking is essential if we are to maintain a healthy commercial sector.

Thumbs Up - to John Mackey on reaching 25 years in business along Port Perry’s lakefront. When John purchased Port Perry Marina it was a run-down building sitting on a sinking dock. Since then, with the

township’s help, he’s built up his business and provided a valuable service to the community. Hope we see you there for a long time to come John. Congratulations. Your operation is a credit to the town.

Thumbs Down - to whoever should have been responsible for making sure the goose poop was cleaned before the Rotary Aquarama last month. Rotarians raked and cleaned for an hour before their event, but there was

still mounds of droppings making the lakefront an eyesore. What a disgusting site. This beautiful public park should be cleaned of this mess every morning before residents and tourist begin to arrive. If the township is going to promote Palmer Park as a great public asset, they should at least make sure the park is cleared daily of this mess.

We are a location of the Canadian Tai Chi Academy. We teach aform of Tai Chi which focuses on the physical and mental well-being of the student. It is a continuous learning process which works to keep the body strong and flexible and the mind challenged and alert.

Regular practice of this art allows the body to rejuvenate itself naturally. Students may notice a reduction of stress, improvement in balance and sleep and increased energy. Many students report a reduction in the effects of arthritis and other chronic diseases.

By making Tai Chi part of a healthy lifestyle earlier in life, we can remain healthy and active as we age. For more information call Beth – 905-985-2062www.canadiantaichiacademy.org

Yoga for Transformation: Choosing A Level of Commitment

The benefits of yoga are well documented. These include greater degrees of balance and flexibility. Yoga is beneficial in preventing middle age spread, and reducing stress.

David teaches Viniyoga method. It takes individual physical capabilities and emotional states into account as his class unfolds. Each person in the class explores their own physical and psychological processes through breath and movement.

There are many choices, depending on levels of physical strength and capability, and most importantly, what level of physical involvement you desire during a particular class. These choices can all gracefully unfold in Maya Healing Arts yoga classes.

How do I assess the teacher’s qualifi cations?4. What do my fees include?5. Can I get immediate assistance and customer service?

Studies show people who take art classes live happier & healthier

There are lots of reasons to take art classes, why not add goodhealth to the list? Besides learning a new skill, creating something interesting and meeting new friends, taking an art class will help you physically as well. A 2001 study in the U.S. concluded that older adults who participated in arts groups used less medication; had fewer doctor visits; and did better on scales for depression, loneliness, and morale. In short, “community-based art programs run by professional artists point to true health promotion and disease prevention effects.”*

So where can you fi nd professionally-taught classes close to home? Right here at META4 Gallery in Port Perry. Our on-site studio is perfectly equipped for a variety of art explorations, from painting and drawing to jewellery, clay and carving.
