American Spirit by Michael Story The ‘greatest nation on earth’ has gained that title at least partially because of the drive, the determination, and the goal-searching attributes of its people. Michael Story celebrates this outlook with a high-energy, tightly written original concert/contest work that musically embodies this undaunted spirit of greatness. Superb melodic content carries through tempo changes to lift up your audiences with the uniqueness that only music can bring.

By Dawn’s Light by David Schaffer A gentle and expressive piece for intermediate level bands by David Shaffer that will help teach students the fine artof legato playing. Provides a very nice change of pace for any band performance.

Park Street Celebration by James Swearingen This work features several contrasting sections that are somewhat technically challenging, yet very playable. Additionally, thelovely middle theme is sure to enhance any band’s ability to handle the fundamentals of expressive playing.

Third Suite by Robert JagerComposed in 1966, this three movement work is performed regularly in contests and festivals as well as on concert band programs globally. The unique setting of this original work provides subtle challenges to the performers and conductor with enhanced interest for the listener. Robert Jager was born in Binghamton, New York (1939), and is a graduate of The University of Michigan. He served in the United State Navy as the Staff Arranger/Composer at the Armed Forces School of Music. Jager is a professor emeritus from Tennessee Tech University.

Appalachian Legacy by Robert SheldonRobert Sheldon is one of the most performed composers of wind band music today. His music is performed around the world and appears on many international concert and contest lists. Appalachian Legacy was commissioned in remembrance of North Carolina music teacher Katheryn Siphers. It is based on the hymn tune When I Survey the Wondrous Cross and explores the harmonic and rhythmic potential of the concertband.

The Pyramids by John TatgenhorstThe Pyramids is highly descriptive contest music in two movements. “Entrance of the Gods’’ is a study in contrasts with bold, powerful tutti phrases followed by soft, lyrical woodwinds and low brass passages. “Tribal Dance’’ features many rhythmic woodwind lines accented by sharp brass accents and a variety of percussion sounds. John Tatgenhorst is a versatile and experienced music composer, arranger and orchestrator for TV, Film, commercials and recording projects.

Sea Songs by Ralph Vaughan Williams Williams wrote “Sea Songs” for British military band in 1924. The piece is a single-movement composition separated into three parts, each based on a traditional English sailing song. The first of these, Princess Royal, is characterized by a light eighth-note accompaniment that persists throughout the section. The second melody, Admiral Benbow, also known as The Brother Tar’s Song, contrasts the first section with a heavy and bold allegro. The third and final melody, Portsmouth, is written in an expressive and flowing cantabile style. A quick repeat of the first two songs brings the work to its conclusion.

Second Suite in F major by Gustav Holst Though composed in 1911, Gustav Holst’s Second Suite in F major was not performed until 11 years later where it debuted in the Royal Albert Hall in London. The piece was initially thought to have been “put aside and forgotten” after its completion, but evidence of hasty revision in the original manuscript suggests that it was in fact composed for a specific occasion, possibly the 1911 “Festival of Empire” that was held at the Crystal Palace in Hyde Park, London. In addition to being longer and more difficult than the First Suite, the Second Suite differs from its predecessor in that it is specifically based on six English folk songs: Morris dance, Swansea Town and Claudy Banks in Movement I, Song Without Words and “I Love My Love” in Movement II, Song of the Blacksmith in Movement III, and Fantasia on the Dargason in Movement IV.

George Washington Bicentennial March by John Philip SousaJohn Philip Sousa composed the George Washington Bicentennial March to commemorate the two hundredth anniversary of George Washington’s birth. The march was performed at the Capital Plaza on February 22, 1932 as a part of a larger celebration gala hosted by the Bicentennial Commission. Sousa himself conducted the bands of the U.S. Army, Navy, and Marine Corps together in the impressive event, one of his last public appearances before his death less than three weeks later on March 8.

Dance of the Bohemian from “The Maid of Orleans” by Pyotr Tchaikovsky (Dance of the Bohemian from) “The Maid of Orleans” (Russian: Orleanskaja deva) is an opera in four acts, six scenes. It was composed during 1878–1879 based on several sources: Friedrich von Schiller’s The Maid of Orleans, Jules Barbier’s Jeanne d’Arc (Joan of Arc); Auguste Mermet’s libretto for his own opera; and Henri Wallon’s biography of Joan of Arc. The opera is dedicated to Eduard Nápravník, who conducted the first performance in 1881 in St. Petersburg. Tchaikovsky wrote several works well known among the general classical public—Romeo and Juliet, the 1812 Overture and Marche Slave. The Maid of Orleans is probably one of his most familiar works, thanks in part to Tchaikovsky’s considerable gift for melody, along with the emotional accessibility of his music.

Suite of Old American Dances by Robert Russell BennettRobert Russell Bennett composed the Suite of Old American Dances in 1950. This suite is an original composition for band in which the composer sets the mood of a Saturday night barn dance. The goal achieved is a genuine piece of music—not a novelty as one might expect from such a setting. The composition is distinguished by superb effectiveness of instrumental writing and facile flow of musical ideas.

Scheherazade by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov Scheherazade Op. 35, is a symphonic suite composed by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov in 1888. Based on The Book of One Thousand and One Nights, this orchestral work combines two features common to Russian music, and of Rimsky-Korsakov in particular: dazzling, colorful orchestration and an interest in the East, which figured greatly in the history of Imperial Russia.In spite of their heavy use of Russian musical themes, all reflect the techniques that had developed in the West. Scheherezade, in particular, illustrates the concept of symphonic tone poem, invented by Franz Liszt. Termed by Korsakov a symphonic suite, it is really a set of four symphonic portrayals inspired by episodes from Tales of the Arabian Nights.

Salvation is Created by Pavel Chesnokov Composed by Pavel Chesnokov, Salvation is Created is one of his most famous works. Chesnokov is the most prolific composer associated with the Moscow Synodal School. Along with Salvation is Created, which exemplies the essense of traditional choral literature of he Russian Orthodox Church, he has compiled a catalogue of over 500 choral works.

Russian Christmas Music by Alfred ReedRussian Christmas Music written by Alfred Reed is one of the most popular and frequently-performed pieces of concert band literature. The piece was originally performed to improve Soviet-American relations; as such, it was to include premieres of new Soviet and American works. Although Russian Christmas Music consists of only one movement, it can be readily divided into four sections the opening section, Carol of the Little Russian Children, The Antiphonal Chant, The Village Song, and The Cathedral Chorus.

The Chimes of Liberty by Edwin Franko Goldman The Chimes of Liberty is a military march by Edwin Franko Goldman and is one of his greatest hits. Many think it is a re-wording of the Liberty Bell March by John Philip Sousa, however, it is a totally different march by a different composer. However, like “The Liberty Bell”, it has a unique use of chimes. This march was most likely written in 1937, and gained a great deal of popularity from the audience. It is considered one of the most lively and tuneful marches ever written, and America’s Greatest March not by Sousa after Bagley’s National Emblem.
