ManyoftheweatherforecastersaresayingtheNortheastcouldbeinforaroughwinterthisyear.WitnesstherecentlyveryearlyandverydeepsnowstormthatblastedBuffaloandtheGreatLakesarea.AndafewweeksagoIfoundoneofthosefurrycaterpillarsinmydrivewayandhewasverydarkandwooly.Thatcan’tbeagoodsign. Sowhatshouldwebethinkingaboutforsafedrivinginthoseconditions.Inrecentyearsmanyfolks,meincluded,havereliedonall-seasontires,especiallyifyouhavefrontwheeldrive.All-seasontiresofferacompromisebetweenthegripandwaterevaporationofsummertiresandwinter/snowtires’treadandtheircompound’sresistancetohardening.Butifthewhitestuffreallygetsdeepthatmightnotbeenough. Muchthecountrywillbefacedwithcold,snow,sleetandicethiswinter.Weliveinoneoftheseregions.Youcanstayabitsaferbyfollowingthesetimelywinterdrivingtips.Themajorityofthetipsarejustgoodoldcommonsense,butitcan’thurttoreviewthem. • Checkintotiresmoresuitedforthewinterweather.Ifyouhave“All-Season”tirestheycanbeupgradedtomoreaggressive“All-Weather”tiresoreven“SnowTires”thatgiveevenbettertraction. • Beyondclearingyourwindshieldandrearwindowofsnow,takethetimetoclearoffyourhoodandroof.Snowonotherpartsofyourvehiclewillblowbackontoyourwindowsifnotclearedbeforemoving. • Packasnowemergencykitinyourvehicle.Includeitemslikeablanket,candles,sandfortractionandperhapsasmallshovelincaseyougetreallystuck. • Keepyourwindshieldfluidfilledandmakesureyouusefluidthatcontainsanti-freezetoinsureitsavailabilityincoldweather. • Allowmoretimetogettoyourdestinationsinthewinter,especiallyininclementweather. • Don’tusecruisecontrolinslipperyconditions. • Useyourbrakegently. • Leavemoreroomthannormalbetweenyouandthevehicleinfrontofyouinsnowyoricyconditions. • Remember,today’sABSbrakeswill“pump”yourbrakesforyou.Applysteadypressurewhenbraking.Thereisnoneedtopumpthem. TheSCCAPirelliWorldChallengehasbecomethetopselfprogramofSCCAProRacingoverthelastdecade,replacingtheTrans-Amwithhighercarcountsandbettersupportbycarbuildersandaftermarketsuppliers.Theseriestriestofollowcurrentmanufacturertrends.Tothatend,theyexpandedtosixclassesforeverythingfromEuroGT3carstothelowlyB-specclubracer. ThefollowingfromProRacingexplainsthethinkingbehindtheseries. Purpose:ThepurposeofthePirelliWorldChallenge®Championshipsistoprovideteams,manufacturersandaftermarketsuppliersacompetitiveproduction-basedraceseriesinwhichtoprovetheirproducts. Race Length:Thereisa50-minutemaximumtimelimitforeveryrace,withthenumberoflapsandtotaldistancebeingdeterminedbytrackconfiguration,laptimesandraceconditions. Homologation of Vehicles:Inadditiontothegeneralseriesrulesthatapplytoallhomologatedvehicles,eachvehiclemodelthatishomologatedintothePirelliWorldChallengeSerieshasasetofspecificationsassignedtoit
onaVehicleTechnicalSpecificationsheet(VTS)inordertogiveequivalentoverallperformancecapabilitiestoawiderangeofvehicles.Adjustmentstoavehicle’sVTSsheetwillbemadeuntilacompetitivepackageisdeveloped. Vehiclesmaybesubmittedforhomologationuptoayearbeforeitgoesongeneralsaletothepublic,anduntilthatparticularbodystylegoesoutofproductionthroughouttheworld. Eligibility:CarsthathavebeenhomologatedforcompetitioninthePirelliWorldChallengeSeriesareeligibleforafull-yearofcompetitionfromthetimeitishomologated,untilthatparticularbodystylehasbeenoutofproductionthroughouttheworldforfour(4)years.Afterabodystylehasbeenoutofproductionforfour(4)years,itmaycontinuetocompeteinnomorethanfive(5)racestotalwithasingledriver,foranadditionalthree(3)years.
