UPDATEWelcome to our Winter Update

from Park View. This has been an incredibly exciting and eventful term and inside this edition, you will find just a sample of some of the fantastic achievements and activities that Park View pupils and staff have been involved in since we returned in September.

It was really good meeting and speaking with so many families at our recent Parents’ Association meeting on November 17th and it is a key priority of Park View’s to build upon and develop our engagement with parents and the local community. Our next Parents’ Association meeting will take place at 6.00pm on 20th January 2016 and we would love as many of you to join us as possible.

Amongst the highlights in this edition, was our recent success at the 2015 Healthcare Leaders’, HSJ Awards Ceremony, the world’s largest healthcare awards. Park View won the category ‘Innovation in Mental Health’ for our Time 2 Talk project, supporting young people with mental health issues. We are very proud of this success and I would personally like to congratulate all of our pupils and staff and the Haringey Adolescent Outreach who led on this fantastic initiative.

I would also like to thank our students and the Performing Arts Faculty for their outstanding performances of William Shakespeare’s The Merchant of Venice at Haringey 6th Form Centre. I personally found this to be one of the most inspiring school productions I have ever witnessed and the feedback we have received from our families and guests who attended was outstanding. I would like to take this opportunity to invite you to our Winter Showcase on 15th December, a celebration of our music department’s work so far this year. Tickets are available to purchase via ParentPay on a first come first served basis.

To finish, I would like to wish all of our staff, pupils and families a happy and restful Christmas break and we look forward to welcoming everyone back at 8.20am on Monday 4th January 2016!

PARK VIEW TIME 2 TALK MENTORS WIN HSJ AWARD FOR THE BEST INNOVATION IN MENTAL HEALTH

AHMED SHARIF WINS STUDENT SPORTS AWARD

On 18th November at Alexandra Palace, Park View and Haringey Adolescent

Outreach Team won the HSJ Award for ‘Innovation in Mental Health’, the largest celebration of excellence in UK healthcare.

The Time 2 Talk project used drama, film making, teaching and peer support to tackle the growing issue of child mental ill health. This partnership has been running since September 2013. Anonymous case studies of young people who had experienced serious emotional distress were used for student drama workshops and the resulting theatre performance was then translated into a film - “The Boy Behind the Mask”. This film provided a framework for the development of lesson plans for a module or classwork about mental health and emotional wellbeing, for students in Years 9 and 10.

Mentors were then chosen to support the emotional wellbeing of their peers; training and guidance was developed for staff and parents; and a mental health policy was developed for the whole school.

The Trust said the project had much to offer other schools and showed the potential of empowering young people. Judges hailed ‘impressive leadership’ on the project and praised its peer involvement.

Ahmed from Year 9 has been highly successful this year in his cross country competitions. Since

September, he has won the following events:

« U14 800m and 4x200m Lee Valley Indoor Athletics qualifiers

« U15 Cross Country London Heathrow Games « Haringey Cross Country trials

He is a linchpin of both our cross country and athletics teams.

Haringey Sports Development Team has recognised Ahmed’s talent and is sponsoring him so that he can be fully kitted out with the required equipment and clothing. We have high hopes that Ahmed will be selected to represent Middlesex in the English Schools Championships later this academic year and his aim is to win the County Cross Country trials in January. Good Luck Ahmed!

After weeks of challenging heats and many hours of preparation and cooking, Elm House contestants Kai Rowe and Orla Tyson

in Year 10 were both crowned Master Chef champions. As well as winning points for their House, the victors received prizes of baking kits and a trophy, along with the pleasure of seeing their winning dishes served in the school canteen. The two budding chefs were thrilled to watch fellow students tucking into their stir fried chicken and noodles followed by pancakes with strawberry and vanilla cream.

Due to the popularity of this competition in its launch year, this will now be an annual event. Next year, the competition will be run on a grander scale, involving even more students and allowing them to showcase their talents. Who knows, we may even discover the next Gordon Ramsay!

THE PIXL AWARDS EVENING

GIRLS SPORTS PARK VIEW SPORTS JOURNALISTS

STUDENTS EARN LEVEL 2 CYCLING PROFICIENCY AWARD

The PIXL awards evening was a fantastic event in which schools across the country celebrated the amazing achievements of

students in their summer of 2015 GCSE results.

All of the students who received awards on the day faced tremendous hurdles and challenges during their time in school and yet through sheer determination and perseverance excelled in their exams.

Representing Park View were Meryem Arslan and Parisa Bakmohammadi - both of whom are true success stories. Not only did they manage to overcome personal difficulties they were both experiencing, they shone through amongst their peers in exceeding their target grades in many subjects at GCSE level.

Park View are very proud of their achievement and wish them the best of luck in their futures.

As part of our drive to promote sustainable travel, the Eco Club organised a cycle training course for some Year 7 and 8 students

with the aim of teaching students how to cycle safely and confidently in Haringey. Four students successfully completed the cycling proficiency course earning themselves a Level 2 certificate.

Paul Wheeler, the training instructor, was very impressed with our students and said “Students worked really hard and behaved brilliantly”. Passing Level 2 doesn’t automatically mean that riders are safe to ride on the road unaccompanied but shows that they have demonstrated safe riding skills and practice and have been able to make safe decisions when on the road. The decision to ride without adult supervision should continue to be something that parents and carers are involved in.

NETBALL: The senior netball team have had some great successes by winning their last two matches: 27-2 and 26-0!

Year 8 girls’ netball team have won their last match against Hornsey Girls School 6-2 and are looking forward to their next match.

FOOTBALL: The girls under 16s football team have won their first English Schools Football Association match 4-0 and are through to

the next round. Well done to all of the players for their hard work.

Maxime Salamanta and Leo Usher-Murray in Year 8 have been appointed as Park View’s very own

sports journalists.

They have been delivering some excellent interviews alongside producing some great sports reports.

On Tuesday 3rd November a group of Year 11 students attended

aspiration visits to employers in the Wimbledon area of London. These employers were hand-picked by one of our school governors, Eric Osei, who is an experienced London-based business and economic development professional with over twenty years senior level experience.

Eric helped identify four companies that offered a tour, presentations and tailored activities in their progressive companies as a way of inspiring vocational awareness in students. By the end of the day, the Year 11 Park View students had gained real awareness of their individual skills and qualities for the future and where they might focus their passion and ideas in employment. Our remembrance commemorations took place during the second week of November and this year we chose an international anti-

war theme. We wanted to remember not only the soldiers, but also the ordinary people who have suffered around the world because of war, reflecting on the way that war is still destroying the world today.

Mr Collins presented assemblies to all year groups with a message of peace and remembrance for all those around the world who have been affected by war, but especially those who are sometimes forgotten by history. This was followed by activities in tutor time enabling students to reflect on what they could do to make a difference. This is always a sombre time of year, when we are asked

BLACK HISTORY MONTHIn October Parkview celebrated Black History

Month with the theme: Black and In Business.

Ms Tabanor prepared a comprehensive presentation along with fantastic displays across the school for students, teachers and visitors to see images of successful black business men and women.

Students were given an insight into their determination and what made them successful business men and women. Tutors exhibited the presentation during registration where students gained awareness into past and present successful black business entrepreneurs both here in Britain and across the world.

With the support of Ms Black, Ms Tabanor was able to welcome back well-known historian Tony Warner to Park View to deliver a week of educational and interesting assemblies that demonstrated to students a broad history of black people.

A successful business workshop delivered by City Links, was also run at the school which was well attended by the students.

Ms Tabanor managed to convince the school catering staff Wilson Jones to wear their national dress while they served their delicious menu of jollof rice, spicy chicken and fried plantain.

Wilson Jones was very supportive throughout the whole black history month and prepared some really beautiful dishes.

WAR HORSE

ALTERNATIVE EDUCATION CREATE A MAGICAL WINTER WONDERLAND

In November our Year 11 drama students attended a production of War Horse at The National Theatre.

Aniela Lojek in 11A writes:

“War Horse was an excellent play because of the contrast in music, sound effects and lighting used to create atmosphere. A range of sound effects and lighting were used during the war. For example a dimly lit set and loud explosion sounds. In contrast, birds singing were used as sound effects when the scenes were set in places like Albert’s farm. The characterisation in both the puppets and the actors were excellent because of the raw emotions portrayed. These elements and mediums made the

This winter project was set up to enable the students to learn how to interact with each other more effectively through oral communication.

They developed Park View Learner skills including patience, sharing and most of all how to talk to each other in a respectful way to achieve their goals.

play very impressive and enjoyable for me. It was educational since I learnt more about the time period and have a better idea of the emotional responses towards the war from different people in different areas, as well as the fact that the war affects everyone in different ways.

Overall I think that everyone in the audience enjoyed the play judging by the amount of people that were laughing and crying at appropriate times. The play built a climax towards the end with everyone on edge which showed that the different elements and mediums were used effectively.”

YEAR 9 BIG BANG FAIR TRIP

INTERNATIONAL VISITORS TO PARK VIEW

CHESTNUTS PRIMARY SCHOOL VISITS PARK VIEW MUSIC DEPT.

On the 3rd November, 120 Year 9 students were selected to attend the Big Bang Fair at Kingsway

College which included an array of inspiring activities, fun-filled theatre shows, hands-on exhibits, interactive workshops and a wide range of careers information. All of this played a part in introducing students to the exciting career opportunities available in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) and raising awareness of how these subject skills increase their employability.

Chestnuts Primary school came to visit Park View’s Music department to get a real feel for the

instruments and what we have to offer. Every student had a session on the drums and seemed very excited at the prospect of learning at Park View.

Park View enjoyed the sessions and we hope all of the Chestnuts students did too and we look forward to inviting them in again next year!

October was an exciting time for international events at Park View, as we hosted visitors from our

international partner schools in Ghana and the Czech Republic.

The Year 9 students had a fantastic day! It was full of amazing, interactive learning experiences. The students took part in events held by RoboLabs, The Wiggly Wild Show, Beauty by the Geeks and The Ugly Animal Preservation Society. The Flux Dance workshop which brought Science alive through kinaesthetic learning by using their bodies and creativity to represent key physics concepts was another highlight event.

Students also had the opportunity to handle reptiles and other creepy crawlies - including ‘Rocco’ the bearded dragon. They learnt how to take a blood sample as well as taste some gourmet insects - yum! Forget I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here, our students were completely unfazed by the creepy, tasty treats on offer and even the teachers had a go at munching on some meal worms and crispy bugs all of which was part of a workshop run by the Institute of Food, Science and Technology.

It was a fun, educational day which has inspired some of our students to become the next scientists or engineers of the future.

On the 19th and 22nd October we were delighted to welcome visitors from the British International School in Ghana. We were happy to return the hospitality they showed us when we visited them last year. Over the course of two days, eight teachers joined us to observe lessons and share their experiences with our staff and students.

On the 20th October we received visitors from Zs Za Aleeji School in the Czech Republic. Four teachers and forty students joined us for the morning and were able to tour the school, observe lessons in core subjects and speak to our staff and students about their British school experiences.

Overall, our visitors enjoyed a very positive visit and we are proud to add this school to our international partnerships. Park View has recently been awarded the International School Award.

YEAR 9s VISIT THE SLADE SCHOOL OF ART

LGBT ANTI-BULLYING BAKE OFF EVENT

TEN PIECES REVIEW

In October a select group of Year 9s braved a wet and blustery day in central London to visit the Slade School of Art at University

College London. The Slade School is one of the best places in the world to study and pursue Fine Art at degree and post graduate level.

The visit presented our students with the opportunity to see the M.A. interim exhibition and talk to some of the M.A. students/artists about their work on display.

Students then went on to meet the Director of Art - Susan Collins, who was very pleased to receive us, and had a guided tour of the artist studios and workshops. With the sheer volume of ideas and visual information experienced

I n November some Year 11 students attended a screening of Ten Pieces, produced by BBC to inspire children and young people to

enjoy classical music and to help encourage their own creativity. Ornela Collaku in 11E writes:

“It was an exhilarating 50 minute experience. Classical music has become so foreign to our generation that most of us do not appreciate the beauty of it. I say this because I am a violinist and can honestly say that classical music is amazing.

In Ten Pieces every piece conveyed a different emotion, it differed from anger and rage to peaceful and tranquil. Nicola Benedetti was featured in the short film. She is a phenomenal violinist who is simply flawless. I could sense the astonishment of the people who were sat beside me. Ten Pieces has allowed me to look at classical music through a different perspective. Something I hadn’t

thought of before, a side that had incorporated many different elements and genres. This has helped me to see that classical music does not have to be strictly Bach, Mozart or Tchaikovsky, it can be more of a mystery, even more than the mystery of Beethoven.

Overall, the experience was brilliant. As well as being exciting and thrilling, it was also delicate and delightful. It was a wonderful and cultivating experience.”

JUNIOR ENTREPRENEUR OF THE YEAR COMPETITION

SWANAGE TRIP

On Wednesday 18th November a group of our Year 8 students visited Middlesex University to take part in the

Junior Entrepreneur of the Year competition.

This involved five students working on a business plan to find a new area for students. Our team was commended for redesigning a space for all students, especially those with disabilities and learning needs. The five students were Naomi Hunter-Epson, Juliet Kaplan, Abdullahi Isse, Ethan Coggin-Costelloe and Kaliya Williams.

COMPANY PROGRAMME

Two teams of students from Year 10 and 11 have recently embarked on a quest to set up their own businesses. We have linked with Young Enterprise and HSBC to provide bank accounts to students who will start trading over the next couple of weeks. On Thursday 26th November one group visited the Wren Academy in North Finchley to meet industry experts and finalise some of their ideas at the launch afternoon.

Both of the businesses will be visible around school in the coming weeks, as well as being at school events and trade fairs in places like Old Spitalfields Market and Brent Cross. The students also aim to have a social media presence and build a website which can take online payments. Please look out for their ambitious plans.

WHAT’S COMING UP IN ENTERPRISE?

The school magazine designed and ran by students in the Enterprise Team will be launching next term so please look out for that. The Tenner Challenge also starts again next term, with students being given £10 to start their own business and compete in a national competition for four weeks, while learning how to market products and balance the books. Get those thinking hats on!

In October, 34 students in Year 10 had the privilege to complete their controlled assessment field trip to Swanage.

They spent two days in the cold and rain collecting data on two different types of landscapes and beaches on Dorset’s Jurassic Coast. They were very brave and completed the work brilliantly.

This was a great experience for them as some had never seen the English Channel first hand and were able to see the beautiful countryside away from the high rising buildings of the city. This field trip will be the start to writing their controlled assessment worth 25% of their GCSE in Geography. Thank you to Ms Romanczuk for organising the trip, to Ms Ahmet, Ms Charlebois and Mr Hamer for volunteering their time on the weekend.
