2018 VERMONT BREWERS FESTIVAL KILLINGTON

[1]

A Letter from the VBA President

On behalf of the Vermont Brewers Association, welcome to the first ever Vermont Brewers Festival Killington!

I can honestly say, I have never been more excited for a beer event than I am for this one. Why? Because it brings together two of my favorite things about doing business in Vermont: beer and collaboration.

When brainstorming ideas for a new festival to help support the goals of the Vermont Brewers Association, one thing that kept coming up was “what can we offer that no other festival can?” The answer is energizing our brewing community to work together and explore the possibilities of collaboration across the state. We have 18 different pairs of brewers that came together to create beers that have never been imagined before, and we get to present them to you here today! I am confident that you will get to try plenty of beer worth finding.

Speaking of collaboration, there are many people to thank for making this Festival possible. First of all, thank you to our spectacular Festival and Marketing Manager, Amy Cronin. I am particularly thankful as I know the challenges of creating an entirely new festival experience from the ground up, and Amy has exceeded even what we hoped to accomplish. Thank you also to our Vermont Brewers Association Events Committee, chaired by Andrea Gagner of 14th Star Brewing, and representing 4 other breweries as well. Thank you to Melissa Corbin, our stalwart Executive Director, who tirelessly works to move our mission forward. Thank you to our volunteers, who help this Festival run smoothly, and without whom we would be utterly lost. Thank you to all the Brewers Association members for taking the time to help us represent our association with the best Vermont has to offer and to embrace the spirit of collaboration so wholeheartedly. Thank you to our Allied Trade Partners for your ongoing support of our Association and our industry as a whole. Thank you to Killington Resort for making us feel at home, and being wonderful hosts to this exciting new event.

And most of all, thank all of you for making this Festival what it is, and for showing your support of the Vermont Brewers Association, and all the hard work of our staff and members. With your help, we are moving forward with our mission to promote and strengthen the culture of craft brewing in Vermont through marketing, education, and advocacy for Vermont made beer.

So, drink responsibly, explore new beers and breweries, meet some brewers, and most of all, enjoy yourselves!

Cheers!

Avery Schwenk President, Vermont Brewers Association

Vice-President and Brewer, Hermit Thrush Brewery

Welcome to the 1st Annual Vermont Brewers Festival KillingtonWelcome to the inaugural winter Vermont Brewers Festival, the beginning of a tradition that has Vermont Brewers filled with excitement and flexing their collective creative muscles. Most craft beer consumers are aware of the summer festival that takes place along the picturesque shores of Lake Champlain, but the craft beer lover knows that the true Vermont experience also includes enjoying the beauty that the winters months have to offer. Killington Mountain is the perfect place for all those to enjoy Vermont, its amazing beer, and phenomenal skiing and snowboarding.

Like our annual summer festival, our goal is to give consumers access to quality beers consistently being produced in the State of Vermont. The winter festival, however, adds a delicious twist; collaboration. This festival features over 25 collaboration brews from the multitude of talented craft brewers within this beautiful state. The collaborations were determined by the brewers themselves and were not hampered by distance, style or brewery size. Large-scale brewers paired with small brewers, northern brewers collaborated with southern brewers, and brewers that specialize in sour beers worked with brewers of traditional ales, among many others.

Author and motivational speaker Mattie Stepanek once wrote, “Unity is strength… when there is teamwork and collaboration wonderful things can be achieved.” Wonderful things have been achieved, and the consumer at this festival will be able to see first hand just how well the collaboration between some of the best brewers in the United States, the world, have turned out. You will taste flavors like you never have before, you’ll get a sneak peek into the creative minds of these experts, and enjoy the spirit that makes the craft beer industry unique; the ability to appreciate the talents of each other and the courage to try new things.

the cobblestone streets and biergartens of Bamberg, Germany where Rauchbiers are a way of life.

GATES OF HELLES (5.1% 27 IBU) Enter the realm of smoked beers through the Gates of Helles. We use a soft touch on the smoke to complement this helles-style lager. This creates an amazingly satisfying and refreshing golden lager whereby the smoke brings complexity and depth to the world’s most popular style of beer. Crack open the Gates of Helles and abandon all hope of returning to conventional beers.

BLACKSTRAP ALE (5.9% 30 IBU) This smoky dark ale is inspired by Switchback Founder Bill Cherry’s time in Kansas City. Blackstrap Ale harkens to KC’s iconic BBQ tradition with its combination of sweet and smoky flavors, derived from an outrageous use of smoked, roasted, and caramelized malts with a hint of dark brown sugar. Drink up and dream of burnt ends with this explosion of bold and smoky flavors.

WEISSBIER (5.2% 14 IBU) Our Vermont take on a Bavarian classic, this “white beer” exudes a spicy, citrusy aroma with a lush, tropical palate. The malt imparts a fruity, peppery character, and rich mouthfeel that yields to a lovely, brightly carbonated finish. Our Wheat beer is brewed to coincide with the changing of seasons from Winter to Spring.

VIENNA STYLE LAGER (5.2% 33 IBU) Named for the city that created the style, our amber lager is malt forward with a grassy, crackery hop aroma. A classic blend of German malts and hops develop lingering flavors of biscuit and caramel on the finish.

CONEHEAD (5.7% 49 IBU) Our single hop wheat IPA, brewed with all Citra hops. Lighter in color and lower ABV than a typical American IPA, this beer has just the right amount of hop flavor and aroma.

LITTLE WOLF (4.7% 40 IBU) Named for the translation of the hop plant species “Humulus Lupulus” which got it’s name because it was small but feisty. This pale ale was brewed with barley, oats, and a blend of Horizon, Citra and Mosaic hops.
