1. Ruth Prawer Jhabvala born on - 7 May 1927. 2. Ruth Prawer Jhabvala won both a Booker Prize and an Oscar. 3. Humour is the quality that makes amusing or funny. 4. Wit is the ability to use words in amusing way. 5. Wit and Humour is taken from the novel “The House Holder” authored by Ruth Prawer Jhabvala. 6. Prem is a college lecturer 7. The college is headed by the pompous Mr.Khanna, Principal. 8. Mr.Chaddha history professor, a cantankerous old man who spends much of his time to impress Mr.Khanna 9. Mr.Khanna lives on the campus with his bossy wife Mrs.Khanna 10. A tea party was arranged by Mr.Khanna in the College. 11. Indu and Prem were invited to the tea party. 12. Indu wore her best sari – a lilac colored georgette 13. Indu’s jewellery includes– heavy necklace, long earrings & twelve gold bangles. 14. Indu usually wears only cotton saris at home. 15. Indu’s dressing at party gave her an opulent effect. 16. Prem was wearing his best shirt and trousers. 17. Prem asked Indu to speak very politely at party. 18. Prem wanted Indu to be seen as well educated. 19. Members of the college staff with their wives seated in the living room. 20. Mr.Khanna said to his guests “Please be quite comfortable.” 21. Mr.Chaddha said “the society of ladies is said to have a very softening effect”. 22. Mr.Chaddha was wearing a cream-colored suit. 23. According to Mr.Chaddha, women are known as the gentle sex. 24. The party was arranged in Mr.Khanna’s living room. 25. The ladies were seated together in one half of the circle of chairs. 26. The ladies held themselves very stiff at the party. 27. Only Mrs.Khanna was at ease in the party. 28. Mrs.Khanna’s dressing – wide silk pyjama trousers with sky-blue shirt. 29. Relaxation is necessary to the human mind and to the human body. 30. Mr.Khanna handed each guest a quarter-plate of flowered English crockery. 31. The tasty dishes in party were prepared by Mrs.Khanna. 32. Dishes that were circulated in the party – fritters, samosas and sweetmeats. 33. Mr.Khanna humorously rallied women by saying – our ladies must show a better appetite. 34. Only there are two people in the party who ate with better appetite – Mr and Mrs. Khanna. 35. Prem felt very uneasy because of his wife Indu overeating. 36. Mr.Chaddha thanked Mr.Khanna at the end of the party.

37. All teachers said in response to Chaddha’s comments – Excellent party. 38. According to Mr.Chaddha, such type of parties are conducive to good will and good fellowship. 39. While eating, Indu quite lost to her surroundings. 40. Indu seemed in a trance of enjoyment. 41. Pregnant women generally have strange and uncontrollable desires. 42. Indu was busily licking her fingers. 43. Before the servant came to collect the dishes, Indu had quickly taken two more large sweetmeats. 44. Prem did not blame Indu because he knew that she was pregnant. 45. Prem pretended to be listening to Mr.Chaddha. 46. But actually all his feeling were with Indu. 47. Prem wanted to explain his wife situation to Mrs.Khanna. 48. Prem wated to make them understand that Indu’s odd behavior is due not lack of breeding but to natural causes. 49.
