Dear Parishioners,
Much has been happening around here even in the midst of COVID. We have added three (3) daily Masses in the evening — 7 PM on Mondays in English, 7 PM on Tuesdays in Spanish, and 7 PM on Thursdays in English. We are offering confessions on Wednesday nights from 6-8 PM and adoration from 6-9 PM in the Main Church with a musical Holy Hour from 7-8 PM. Our school has successfully been back in session since before Labor Day practicing mask-wearing, social-distancing, and hand-washing. We are offering more (and smaller) school Masses so that the students may remain in their cohorts and be social-distanced in the church. Our Spanish RCIA is meeting in person on Mondays and our English RCIA by Zoom every Monday. Our Religious Education is going forward virtually with weekly lessons from Sister Cecilia, myself, and Fr. Brendan. Cornelius Ugwu is busy visiting the sick and the homebound in their homes, and we welcome a part-time Outreach Coordinator, Emily Rubeling, for Food Pantry, St. Vincent De Paul, and to coordinate visits to homes and nursing facilities when we are allowed to resume. We will be resuming altar servers at Mass starting November 7/8. We can’t wait to have our young people assisting at the altar once again.
I pray you are well during these times and that the anxiety, loneliness, and fear this pandemic may cause will not affect you. If you need assistance, a visit, or simply a conversation, please let us know. People are becoming very creative in connecting with one another, and we do not want to leave anyone behind. You may always contact the Parish Office at [email protected] or 410-833-1696. Stay tuned for our plans for All Saints Day, All Souls Day Mass (evening) at 7 PM on Nov. 2, Advent, and Christmas.
Fr. Jerry Francik
All Souls Day Mass of Remembrance In honor of the Feast of All Souls, we will celebrate a special Mass of Remembrance on Monday, November 2 at 7:00 PM in the Main Church. This Mass is offered for all those souls from our parish who were born into eternal life during the past year.
All are welcome to attend, and families and friends of the deceased are encouraged to join us in this special All Souls Mass. Families who have RSVP’d to the parish invitation will be invited to come forward and light a candle in memory of their loved one when his or her name is called. (If you are unable to join us or are uncomfortable coming to Mass during the pandemic, this Mass will also be livestreamed.)

Estimados feligreses,

Our Daily Bread Casseroles
Thank you to everyone who contributes casseroles for Our Daily Bread! We are collecting casseroles this week, so please take a casserole pan or two home with you after any Mass in the Main Church. Our Daily Bread is a soup kitchen in Baltimore City managed by Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Baltimore.
To prevent spillage, please double-bag and freeze or refrigerate your casserole before you drop it off. If you can’t make a casserole, please consider donating dry goods such as canned vegetables/fruit, coffee, tea, sugar, peanut butter and jelly, powdered drink mixes, and non-food kitchen items such as paper cups, paper and plastic sandwich bags, and kitchen cleaning materials.
Our volunteers will be at the rear door of the school cafeteria on Tuesday evening, October 27 from 7:00 – 9:00 PM and again on Wednesday morning, October 28 from 7:30 – 9:00 AM to collect your casseroles and/or dry goods donations. Please contact Mark Grabenstein at [email protected] or 410-654-0414 for more details.
Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness
Nearly 25% of all pregnancies end in a miscarriage. One great support in Maryland is the Holy Innocents Ministry of the Archdiocese of Baltimore, which offers pastoral care, spiritual and emotional support, and burial services for families who have lost a child to miscarriage. Keep this information handy if a family member or friend experiences a miscarriage. Learn more about how this program helps families experiencing loss by clicking here, and please hold these families in prayer.

Laudato si’ Year for the Catholic Church When we fail to acknowledge as part of reality the worth of a poor person, a human embryo, a person with disabilities — to offer just a few examples — it becomes difficult to hear the cry of nature itself; everything is connected. Once the human being declares independence from reality and behaves with absolute dominion, the very foundations of our life begin to crumble. (LS #117)
What prevents you from hearing the cries of the poor and the cries of Earth? Do you consider one more important than the other, or can you see how both are connected? What can help you be more attentive and responsive?

Join Us in Praying at the Holy Hour for Life
Psalm 139:13 “You formed my inmost being; you knit me in my mother’s womb.”
The Respect Life Committee invites you to join us for the Holy Hour for Life during Eucharistic Adoration on Friday, November 6 from 4:00 ‒ 5:00 PM in the Main Church. We invite you to join us in person as we adore our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament, listen to songs of praise, listen to children read prayers and scripture verses, and
pray all will respect the sanctity of life from conception to natural death. We will also livestream the Holy Hour for Life via the Sacred Heart Facebook page. Please join us in person or from home. Thank you for your steadfast prayers for respect for the sacred gift of life.
Invitation to Participate in a Rosary Walk 1 Thes 5:16-17 “Rejoice always.
Pray without ceasing.” The Legion of Mary and the Respect Life Committee invite you to join them in participating in a Rosary Walk on Saturday, November 7. We will meet on the front steps of the Little Church at 10:00 AM and then pray a Rosary together while processing behind a beautiful statue of Our Lady of Fatima as we walk around the neighborhoods surrounding our church. We pray all will respect the sacred gift of life from conception to natural death and for peace in our world. If you are unable to join us in person, please consider uniting with us in prayer by praying a Rosary from home.
Handicap Grant from the Knott Foundation The Knott Foundation has approved our request for a grant to assist in handicap accessibility for the church and school! We will be getting further bids on creating a smooth walking area to the Main Church and to the Little Church, upgrading the walkway from the school-side parking lot, and installing door assisted openers. This will take some time to obtain the necessary bids, approve the work, and complete the actual construction, but the good news is that we are on our way!
Visits to the Sick and Homebound If you have a family member or know of someone who is homebound, in the hospital, or at home with a short-term illness, please know that there is Pastoral Care available for them. Contact Seminarian Cornelius at 410-833-1696 or [email protected] to make arrangements.

COVID-19 Vaccine Update: Several Ethical Vaccines in Production
Five of the major companies undertaking clinical trials for a COVID vaccine have used ethical production methods and have received a combined $6.5 billion in federal funding. However, two companies in the clinical trial phase are pursuing unethical research utilizing fetal cell lines in production, and they have received $1.6 billion in federal funding. The Charlotte Lozier Institute created a brief fact sheet comparing the ethics of these vaccines and produced a longer report showing all vaccines in production.
Last Call: Making Masks for the Needy Sacred Heart has been participating in Maryland’s “Day to Serve” this year by making masks for the Baltimore needy. We need mask completion by October 31 — as many masks as possible. (They can be hand-stitched or ready-made.) Please contact Ann Dalrymple at ammoncircuit@ gmail.com for more details and to sign up.
New Raised Crosswalk The new raised crosswalk and traffic calming is now installed on Sacred Heart Lane. Please use caution in walking across the walkway and accessing it by car. Please take extra note of the No Parking zones. We will be alerting people to these zones in the next few weeks. They are there to protect the people in the crosswalk by giving clear vision of the walkway from the road. The Baltimore County Police will be enforcing the No Parking zones in the near future.

Rite of Christian
Initiation of Adults “Thirsting for God?” Do you know someone not baptized or baptized in a non-Catholic Christian tradition who is thirsting for what it means to become Catholic?
Do you know someone already Catholic but has not yet received Confirmation and Communion? They may be thirsting, too! The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) is a place to ask questions and seek understanding.
The RCIA is a Church rite for adults pursuing the possibility of joining the Roman Catholic Church. If you, or someone you know, are interested or would like more information, please contact Michele Hunter at 410-833-1696 or
Maryland Catholic Conference
Catholics and Politics In November, we will elect a president as well as members of Congress. The men and women who are elected will make critical decisions that directly affect the values and priorities of our faith. It is important for Catholics to vote with a formed conscience and to know where candidates stand before prayerfully voting. Please visit the Maryland Catholic Conference website at www.mdcatholic.org/elections for helpful resources about voting in Maryland, candidate surveys, and more.
“Forming our consciences is a 3-part process. First, we must genuinely seek the truth by studying Scripture and the teachings of the Church. Second, we must educate ourselves about the facts of a situation. Third, we must pray for the guidance of the Holy Spirit.”

Domestic Violence Awareness One in four women and one in seven men have experienced domestic abuse: physical, sexual, psychological, emotional, or economic. There are reports that domestic violence has increased during COVID. This impacts all of us, and you deserve to feel safe at home. If you experience any form of abuse, please know that you are not alone. There is help. To get help now for yourself or for a family member, contact the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-799-7233 or visit thehotline.org. “In Joyful Hope” Webinar
Join the Maryland Catholic Conference webinar on end of life planning, In Joyful Hope: Planning Your Healthcare, on Wednesday, November 11 at 7:00 PM. Hear from our panel of experts, including Rev. Michael DeAscanis, STL; Shannon Hammond, Esq.; and Joan Panke, NP.
These wonderful presenters will share about Church teaching on end of life care, how to fill out an advance health care directive, and the options for
excellent care — including palliative and hospice care. The webinar is free, but you must register in advance by clicking here.
Support for Caregivers Caregiving is stressful in the best of times. If you help an ill or disabled adult with daily tasks, you might feel overwhelmed, depressed, tired, or just burnt out — and you might feel guilty for feeling this way. You are not alone. One in 12 Marylanders are caregivers, and you deserve support. Visit mdcatholic.org/endoflife for resources from the Maryland Catholic Conference on caregiving, discussing end of life with loved ones, hospice, and more. It includes a simple document that outlines the essentials of our Catholic faith, with an advanced care directive that you can fill out and use in Maryland.
Make Your Voice Heard Our state’s General Assembly creates laws on health care and end of life issues. Make sure your voice is heard! Sign up for the Maryland Catholic Advocacy Network to receive email updates and action alerts on topics you choose at mdcatholic.org/joincan.
Respect Life Committee
In anticipation of the upcoming national and local elections, please read this guidance from the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB), found in full by clicking here:
Catholics in Political Life It is the teaching of the Catholic Church from the very beginning, founded on her understanding of her Lord’s own witness to the sacredness of human life, that the killing of an unborn child is always intrinsically evil and can never be justified. If those who perform an abortion and those who cooperate willingly in the action are fully aware of the objective evil of what they do, they are guilty of grave sin and thereby separate themselves from God’s grace. This is the constant and received teaching of the Church. It is, as well, the conviction of many other people of good will.
To make such intrinsically evil actions legal is itself wrong. This is the point most recently highlighted in official Catholic teaching. The legal system as such can be said to cooperate in evil when it fails to protect the lives of those who have no protection except the law. In the United States of America, abortion on demand has been made a constitutional right by a decision of the Supreme Court. Failing to protect the lives of innocent and defenseless members of the human race is to sin against justice. Those who formulate law therefore have an obligation in conscience to work toward correcting morally defective laws, lest they be guilty of cooperating in evil and in sinning against the common good.
As our conference has insisted in Faithful Citizenship, Catholics who bring their moral convictions into public life do not threaten democracy or pluralism but enrich them and the nation. The separation of church and state does not require division between belief and public action, between moral principles and political choices, but protects the right of believers and religious groups to practice their faith and act on their values in public life.
Our obligation as bishops at this time is to teach clearly. It is with pastoral solicitude for everyone involved in the political process that we will also counsel Catholic public officials that their acting consistently to support abortion on demand risks making them cooperators in evil in a public manner. We will persist in this duty to counsel, in the hope that the scandal of their cooperating in evil can be resolved by the proper formation of their consciences.
Having received an extensive interim report from the Task Force on Catholic Bishops and Catholic Politicians, and looking forward to the full report, we highlight several points from the interim report that suggest some directions for our efforts:
• We need to continue to teach clearly and help other Catholic leaders to teach clearly on our unequivocal commitment to the legal protection of human life from the moment of conception until natural death. Our teaching on human life and dignity should be reflected in our parishes and our educational, health care and human service ministries.
• We need to do more to persuade all people that human life is precious and human dignity must be defended. This requires more effective dialogue and engagement with all public officials, especially Catholic public officials. We welcome conversation initiated by political leaders themselves.
• Catholics need to act in support of these principles and policies in public life. It is the particular vocation of the laity to transform the world. We have to encourage this vocation and do more to bring all believers to this mission. As bishops, we do not endorse or oppose candidates. Rather, we seek to form the consciences of our people so that they can examine the positions of candidates and make choices based on Catholic moral and social teaching.
• The Catholic community and Catholic institutions should not honor those who act in defiance of our fundamental moral principles. They should not be given awards, honors or platforms which would suggest support for their actions.
• We commit ourselves to maintain communication with public officials who make decisions every day that touch issues of human life and dignity.
Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship (see full document by clicking here) Making Moral Choices, paragraph 31: “Decisions about political life are complex and require the exercise of a well-formed conscience aided by prudence. This exercise of conscience begins with outright opposition to laws and other policies that violate human life or weaken its protection. Those who knowingly, willingly, and directly support public policies or legislation that undermine fundamental moral principles cooperate with evil.”

Catholics have a long tradition of engagement in the public square. Sometimes that engagement requires making difficult moral decisions that impact our own lives and those of others. Our conscience can help guide the decisions we make. The Second Vatican Council guides us: “Always summoning [one] to love good and avoid evil, the voice of conscience can when necessary speak to [one’s] heart more specifically: do this, shun that” (Gaudium et Spes 16). However, our conscience doesn’t just come to us when we are born. We must work throughout our lives to form it through prayer, learning, and conversation.
How do I form my conscience?
It takes time to form our consciences so that we can make well-reasoned judgments about particular, real-life situations. The Church teaches that it is important to work continually on conscience formation so we can be prepared to make decisions whenever the opportunity arises. Some specific ideas to form your conscience are:
1) Begin by being open to the truth and what is right.
2) Study Sacred Scripture and the teaching of the Church.
3) Examine the facts and background information about various choices and be discerning in where we gather information.
4) Prayerfully reflect to discern the will of God (Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship, no. 18).
Additionally, it is important to consider how our community of faith can help us form good consciences through some of these steps:
1) Seek the prudent advice and good example of trusted leaders and others to support and enlighten our conscience.
2) Learn about the authoritative teaching of the Church.
3) Pray for the gifts of the Holy Spirit to help us develop our conscience.
4) Regularly partake in an examination of conscience to hear God’s voice in your life.1
Doing the work of forming our consciences can seem daunting. Fortunately, we have many church teachings that can help us in this important task. Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship is an important resource for U.S. Catholics and helps us prayerfully reflect on how we can apply Church teaching in our civic life. “Conscience is not something that allows us to justify doing whatever we want, nor is it a mere "feeling" about what we should or should not do. Rather, conscience is the voice of God resounding in the human heart, revealing the truth to us and calling us to do what is good while shunning what is evil.”2
Here are some questions for further reflection:
1. When has my conscience guided me to “do good and avoid evil”?
2. What are some key resources I can use to form my conscience?
3. Forming conscience is a “lifelong task.” What do I do to regularly form my conscience? What more should I do?
