About twelve years ago, one of our most beloved colleagues on the Los Angeles Superior Court, thelate Beverly Reid O’Connell, was enjoying a cup of coffee with a close friend Maria Carman when thelatter, a high school teacher, began to lament the lack of engaging civics education programs for highschool students. As was her nature, Judge O’Connell wanted to help. How could they fill thisvacuum? Within a couple minutes, the two friends were brainstorming ideas about bringing studentsand lawyers together at courthouses and introducing the students to different aspects of our legalsystem. How about having the students meet with judges and attorneys in small mentorship circleswhere the students would feel more at ease about asking questions? How about inviting elected andappointed officials to share the obstacles they encountered on their path to success? How aboutteaching the students the protections of the Fourth, Fifth, and Sixth Amendments through a fun andinteractive game? As these ideas started racing, Judge O’Connell scribbled notes on a Starbucksnapkin. By the end of the conversation, she had accumulated several note-filled napkins.

“Women with Money: The Judgment-Free Guide to Creating the Joyful,Less Stressed, Purposeful (and, Yes, Rich) Life You Deserve”

In this comprehensive book, Jean Chatzky, a financial expert, talks about an often-taboo subject:money. She explores what we, women, want from our money and how to make more of it. She notesthat men and women want different things from money. For many men, money is the target and thedefinition of success (#winning). While, for women, the life we want to create with the money is ourmeasure of success (#lifegoals).

Chatzky observes that, while there have been upteen studies about why women still earn less thanmen, reasons include the fact that women a) don’t negotiate for it, and b) don’t go out there and getoffers from other employers so that they can go back to their current one with proof that they should bepaid more. In other words, we don’t advocate for ourselves because we don’t want to rock the boat orappear “unlikeable.”

WLALA Board Member Vanessa C. Adriance was interviewed for the Cage Free Chix Podcast. ThePodcast examines combat sports through women’s eyes and experiences, and discusses howmartial arts have helped shape some of the toughest women in the world. Vanessa spoke to the

hosts, Michelle and Nadya, about her experience as an amateur boxer and how fighting has impactedher life personally and professionally. They also chatted about women’s sports in general, learning tolisten to your body, and how stress helps build trust and strong relationships. THANK YOU to Brownie Troop 71835 who donated $200 to WLALA in honor of Judge Laura Seigle!Judge Seigle invited the troop to visit her courtroom at the Los Angeles Superior Court where the girlsparticipated in a mock trial in which Cinderella was charged with littering, having left her glass slipperbehind at the ball. After returning a verdict of not guilty (obviously, despite the strong evidence against

her), the girls took turns sitting up on the bench in the judge's chair. These future lawyers and judges inthe making have no fear of the courtroom or speaking their minds.

WLALA Recertification as a CWL Affiliate: Deadline of 8/21/19 to JoinCWL is Approaching

WLALA is an affiliate organization of California Women Lawyers (CWL), the onlystatewide women’s bar association in California. As an affiliate of CWL, WLALA isable to have a voting Affiliate Governor on the CWL Board of Governors, thus

ensuring that WLALA contributes to the leadership and direction of CWL.

To be a voting affiliate and have an Affiliate Governor on CWL's Board of Governors forthe 2019 through 2020 board year, at least 100 WLALA members must be

concurrent members of CWL by no later than August 21, 2019.
