WLALA Newsletter: November 2019 WLALA Newsletter: November 2019 Volume 25, No. 3 President's Message by Jennifer Leland Happy November! It feels like we just saw each other at the installation dinner but summer is gone and the end of the year is fast approaching. Need proof? Recently I went to CVS to pick something up and was greeted at the entrance by a stuffed Santa Clause! It isn’t even the end of October, I thought to myself, and they are already putting out winter holiday decorations?! I know this is nothing new – I have the same reaction every year, wondering why we can’t enjoy the entire autumn season rather than racing to the end of the year. Commercialism and wildfires aside, fall is one of my favorite times of year – Halloween gives me an excuse to eat more chocolate than usual, the weather gets cooler, allowing me to envelope myself in cozy sweaters, and it means ski season is approaching. WLALA Foundation's Domestic Violence Project

The Women Lawyers Association of Los Angeles Domestic Violence Project (DV Project) is chaired by JillPiano. The DV Project sponsors a weekly drop-in legal clinic each Monday from 6-7 p.m. in conjunctionwith Sojourn, a domestic violence service provider in Santa Monica. At the legal clinic, clients - all of whom are referred by Sojourn - are provided with assistance on a variety oflegal issues, including restraining orders, divorce/separation, child custody, child/spousal support, criminalproceedings as well as civil law issues. These clients represent every socio-economic and ethnicbackground, from executives at large entertainment industry corporations to recent immigrants who speaklimited English. Some of these women are still with their batterer and being abused, while others have lefttheir batterers and are seeking guidance on their legal rights and next steps. The legal clinic is staffed entirely by Carol Tantau, Sojourn Support Services Coordinator, Minty Msiu-Kootnikoff, Legal Services Director, Sojourn, and WLALA volunteer attorneys who answer legal questions, explain the legal process, inform victims of their rights and make referrals as necessary. Through the legalclinic, attorneys provide legal advice, guidance and support to these women, and clients are welcome toreturn as often as necessary until their legal issues are resolved. Each client consultation with is brief, about 10-15 minutes depending on the number of clients waiting for assistance. The legal clinic does notprovide representation of clients in court and does not assist in completing legal forms. However, attorneysare available to review forms completed by clients and to prepare clients to testify and present their case incourt. Repeat clients often work on reestablishing their lives and working towards other positive goals forthemselves and/or their children. Volunteer Opportunities: Volunteers may help in two various ways: 1) volunteering directly for the legal clinic itself; 2) assisting the

co-chairs in organizing with training materials, programs and meetings, or 3) may choose to offer pro bonorepresentation to a client if the volunteer so desires, with mentorship from Sojourn’s Legal ServicesDirector. There is no expectation that a volunteer take a case for representation. We welcome all volunteerattorneys and law students regardless of background or training in domestic violence or family law issues.
