Bitesize Torah from Rabbi Taylor Our Parasha Balak opens with Balak, the King of Moav, asking the sorcerer Balaam to curse the Jewish People. Our ancestors had just conquered the mighty Emorites and Bashanites, and so Balak felt threatened and was very nervous that he would be the next leader to be overthrown. The Chafetz Chaim asks a straightforward question. Surely Balak should have sought a blessing for his nation as opposed to a curse for the Jewish People. Especially after his original attempt failed, why did he not try then to get his nation blessed so that they would be safe from any danger instead of trying again to curse the Jews. The Chafetz Chaim explains that from this episode in the Torah we learn that whenever we are in danger, instead of cursing the perceived source of danger, we should look at ourselves and at own character to work out what can be done to turn around our fortunes. Shabbat Shalom. Kiddush This week’s kiddush has been sponsored anonymously in honour of Linda Sharpe for her wonderful years of kiddushim and catering which have been appreciated by so many. Mazel Tov We wish mazel tov to Gaby and Howard Morris on the engagement of their son Josh to Emily Black. In our parasha Balak, we read how the donkey speaks to Bilaam. Where else in the Torah does an animal speak to a human being?
