Once you enter the USA, your visa is valid for exactly 12 months. Any position that you secure in the USA must be related to your field of study. It must be full time and in an environment where you will be well supervised, receiving on the job training and progressing your skills and knowledge in your chosen field. This is not a general work visa. The great news is that you are not tied to any one employer on this visa. If you do not wish to work for one company for the full 12 months, you can take on shorter term placements, and move around the USA exploring different cities and companies if you wish!

*This visa does not allow you to work in any ‘unskilled occupation’ or restricted J-1 job as listed by the US Department of State. To see a full list of these jobs, please visit our website: www.usavisa.ie/12-month-usa-work-programme

How can I make myself stand out from the crowd?

> College Careers Offi ce:

They may have personal/professional contacts in the US that they can pass onto you

> Long lost American Relatives:

We all have at least one! They may be able to put you in contact with employers in your area, or at the very least give you a couch to stay on while you get settled in!

> Previous J1 Employers:

If you’ve previously been on a summer J1, you should contact your past employers! They may be able to help you out.

> Trawl the internet:

Eg: www.manta.com • www.monster.com • www.indeed.com

> Social Network!

Reach out to previous participants and potential employers through Facebook, Twitter and Linkedin. Check out USIT’s Facebook page to get started: www.facebook.com/usittravel

> Don’t limit your options!

Don’t just apply for advertised positions. Visit the websites of the companies that you are interested in. Here you will almost always fi nd a careers section and contact information. A lot of companies have internal internship/trainee programmes, one of which may just suit you perfectly!

> Be persistent!

Always follow up your job application with an email or a phone call. Make sure the employer knows how interested you are in the position on off er.

• Convert your CV into a resume (1 page concise document). Templates can be found on our websites!

Page 11: Work in the USA

Why would a US Employer hire me rather than a US citizen?US corporations and companies are generally very dedicated to diversifying their businesses. Taking on international interns/trainees boosts a company’s profi le and highlights them as a major player in the worldwide market.

With your qualifi cation and work experience in Ireland, you may have an academic foundation and skill set that a US Employer may have not seen before. You can bring something new to the table, and as much as Irish employers love to see American experience on CVs, Americans feel the same way about Irish experience so if you can sell your unique experience to an employer, you have every chance of getting that job!

Explain the wages in the USA?• There is no cap on the amount of money you can earn in the USA on one of our visa programmes!

• Industries such as Engineering, Architecture, Construction Management, Computer Science and Hospitality have a huge demand for international interns/trainees and pay extremely well!

Do USIT advertise intern/trainee positions?USIT advertise CIEE-sourced intern/trainee positions on our USA websites. You should check out these positions regularly.

Positions that are currently available include:• Wunderman, Seattle, Washington Marketing Design Intern • Hilton Oceanfront Resort, South Carolina Front Offi ce Intern• Holiday Systems International, Las Vegas Business Management Internship• Urban Insight, Los Angeles, California Web Developer

Please see the ‘Jobs’ section on our websites for more information!

What about repeat J1 participants? If you have already completed a summer J1, you can still participate on another USA programme! There is no limit to how many times you can participate on a US visa programme as long as you fi t the eligibility requirements each time!

Please note, all of our USA visa programmes’ regulations state that you are not allowed to work in any ‘unskilled occupations’ or restricted J-1 Jobs, as listed by the US Department of State. These include hairdressing, beauty therapy, trade based occupations, childcare, medical work and education. To see the complete list, please visit: www.usavisa.ie
