1 – 6 OctoberTHE RISE AND FALL OF LITTLE VOICESstarring Beverley Callard as ‘Mari Hoff’, Ray Quinn as ‘Billy’, Joe McGann as ‘Ray Say’, Duggie Brown as ‘Mr Boo’ and Jess Robinson as ‘Little Voice’. In this heart-warming northern fairytale, shy Little Voice spends most of her time immersed in her late father’s record collection and perfecting her astonishing impersonations, much to the dismay of her fun loving, out of control mother Mari. Overheard singing by Ray Say, a hapless talent scout and Mari’s man of the moment, Little Voice is propelled to stardom as Ray sets about creating the show of the century in a dingy local working man’s club. With an agent from London coming and everything counting on this one performance, Mari and Ray’s ticket to the big time rests squarely on Little Voice’s shoulders. But has anyone asked Little Voice what she wants?Theatre Royal Nottingham

FRI 1 - SAT 0 OCTMeet George Hussain Obama. The Mamba. Nairobi slum gangster. US President’s half-brother. Born of the same Kenyan father - their lives worlds apart...

The Mamba, means crocodile in Swahili. It is George’s gang name - he was always the first to snap. Barack Hussein Obama Snr was the father the two boys never really knew. Whilst one brother made it to the pinnacle of First World power, the other became self-styled Third World President of African’s most lawless slum - Huruma. Enter Obama The Mamba’s secret world - his charm will captivate you. A true life story of fate, power and destiny.

The global nature of this work and the relationship between rich and poor nations makes the play a potent production for 2012. Coinciding with the US elections, when Barack Obama’s history and upbringing will again come under scrutiny and the questions of whether a ‘Black Man’ should be President of the United States will undoubtedly

return. This will resonate very powerfully in the play, which raises some fundamental questions about who we are, what we look like and where we come from.

SuN & Fri 9 & SuN 11 NOvFlorestan is a politicalprisoner, held in chains in an under-ground cell. His wife Leonore pretends to be a boy and finds employment at the prison call-ing herself Fidelio. The turnkey Jaquino is in love with Marzel-line, daughter of the gaoler Rocco, but she falls for Fidelio. The governor Pizarro decides that Florestan must die. What can Leonore do?

An imaginative and flexible re-structuring of arguably the greatest opera ever written. The glorious music is sung in the original German, while the spoken dialogue is given an in-genious new slant.

This new production tells the story from Leonore’s point of view, as she reads extracts from her (English) memoirs,

An international cast has been engaged for this exciting produc-tion. Elizabeth Stannard (pic-tured), Minima’s Fidelio, leaped to fame in Australia last year when she stepped in at very short no-tice to sing the same role in Syd-ney Opera House.

Two ideologies collide in a conflict that stretches across a continent and threatens the balance of world power. In its midst, one woman, her three children by her side, sees an opportunity to survive, a way to profit from the slaughter by selling goods to both sides. And the time is about to come when, in her quest for material gain, she must make the ultimate sacrifice.

Regarded by many as the greatest play of the 20th century and even the greatest anti-war play of all time, Mother Courage and Her Children asks fundamental questions about

Mother Courage and Her Children

the our beliefs have on the world and the role of ideology in society and world affairs.

With his last play ‘The Wed-ding Guest’ a failure, James Barrie is crippled by writer’s block and success seems like a far-away land. But then while out walking with his dog Porthos in Kensing-ton Gardens a chance encoun-ter with widow Sylvia Llewellyn Davies and her four young sons (Jack, George, Michael and Peter) sends his heart and imagina-tion soaring, and their friendship gives birth to a magical tale that will live forever.

TUES 1 & THURS 18 OCTOBERBrit nominated, acoustic guitar virtuoso Newton Faulkner has announced a UK tour this October following the release of his third album Write It On Your Skin and will be visiting Leicester on Thursday 16th.

It’s been over three years since 2009’s ‘Rebuilt By Humans’ and in that time he’s toured the world, started a family and some might say helped usher in a new generation of singer-songwriters. Ed Sheeran, Ben Howard and Michael Kiwanuka

might be stylistically diverse, but their ‘have-guitar-will-travel’ approach surely flows from the trailblazing example of Newton.

Now, after invention, innovation, reinvention and creation, comes his third album, bristling with spontaneity, the best kind of DIY imagination, and songs from unlikely sources but with a very likely-lad appeal.

Thursday 25 OcTOberRoyal & derngate’s programme of adult storytelling contin-ues at The black bottom club when internationally renowned performer ben haggarty slips behind the lights, deep into the dark side of the fairground in Mr Sandmann.

As halloween draws near, dreams may become night-mares and the boundaries be-tween the living and the dead begin to blur. Via freak-show and moonshine bar, this intense and alarming storytelling per-formance journeys through the ambivalent mythology of the Sandman, an iconic figure whose presence is still felt in literature, film, music and popu-lar culture.

It is ben himself who be-comes protagonist for the night – who, with his transatlantic flight unexpectedly diverted, finds himself in a Southern-State carnival, right in the buck-le of the bible belt. A reluctant customer of an ageing freak-

show, he moves from exhibit to exhibit, increasingly unsettled by each, until finally the bound-ary between reality and myth dissolves into a bizarre wak-ing dream where the Sandman himself is puppet-master.

Mr Sandmann draws on urban legend, fairytale, myth and folklore, taking in heinrich Von Kleist, eTA hoffman, hans Andersen and nick cave. here Marcello the hypnotist, the rabbit lord, the birds of death and the man in the moon will all find their place in the rich cinema of your mind’s eye.

ART AND CULTURE NEAR YOU...

29 Sept – 4 NOvGLOBAL FOOTPRINT is a new initiative that for the first time aims to deliver a countywide project that celebrates Northamptonshire’s defining creative economy, its boot and shoe industry. It is part of the London 2012 Cultural Olympiad and regional IGNITING AMBITION Festival, supported by Arts Council England, Heritage Lottery Fund, Northamptonshire County Council and Legacy Trust UK, creating a lasting impact from the London 2012 Olympic and

Global Footprint & Field

Paralympic Games by funding ideas and local talent to inspire creativity across the UK. Partners in the project include Northampton Museums and Art Gallery, Northamptonshire County Council, University of Northampton, Northampton Arts Collective and a number of independent museum and heritage organisations across the county.

In addition to recording heritage stories there is a programme of contemporary visual and digital artworks, which will explore the county’s

long-standing boot and shoe industry and its continuing importance to the national and international economic, creative and cultural profile of the county. Visitors to the Northampton Museum & Art Gallery will also be able to see FIELD, an eco-artwork by artist Dominic Wilcox.

FIELD represents the people of Northamptonshire, their lives and their connection with Northamptonshire’s shoe industry, and symbolise the resilience and re-emergence of the county’s boot and shoe industries, and can be viewed at the museum until November 4th. It has been kick-started with sizeable contributions from local footwear designers, Jeffery West in Northampton, Grenson in Rushden and also not-for-profit organisation Planet Aid UK.

Alongside the exhibition, artist Dominic Wilcox will be running two workshops at Northampton Museum & Art Gallery on November 2nd. The first workshop at

10:30am is free and will involve participants making shoes for the Field installation. The second workshop at 2pm & 3pm allows children 8+ to make models out of biscuits, as earlier this year Dominic made London icons out of Jaffa cakes..

WOW LOOKS AT WEDDINGS

Brides are choosing cakes of cheese

“C’est Cheese”, the Market Harborough based cheese specialist, is focused on provid-ing both bespoke and pre de-signed tiered cakes of cheese for specific celebrations such as weddings, retirements, en-gagements, congratulatory, festive or any similar type of event.

The company specialises in the inclusion of local and regional cheeses in its design to offer a more unique and memorable creation. This has resulted in C’est Cheese offer-ing only British cheeses, with a choice of over 200 variations in both traditional and contem-pory designs. Research by the

company (within 60 top hotels) has indicated that one in twen-ty weddings have included lay-ered cakes of cheese in their wedding banquet, rather than the more orthodox cheese plate, or even wedding cake. The tiered cakes of cheese can replace the wedding cake, or supplement the traditional menu.

The requirement of the bride and groom, or event or-ganiser, is discussed with a company team member who relays this information to a unique person known as “The Cheese Mistress”. She has knowledge and specialist skills to take the brief and offer rec-ommendations on the combi-nation, texture and category of the ingredients, as well as the most suitable decoration and overall colour bias. As part of the service offered a recom-

mended wine list to supple-ment and add to the package is also included if required. Suggestions of the most ap-propriate artisan chutneys and pickles, again produced locally can be offered. Cheese tasting and sample boxes of the prod-uct are offered as part of the design service.

C’est Cheese is a company that uses a wealth of experience to provide decorated cakes of cheese for any celebration with a focus on weddings.Tel: 0845 862 1258www.cestcheese.co.ukwww.facebook.com/weddingcakesofcheese @cestcheese12 (twitter) [email protected]

MAKE SURE YOU’RE BEAUTY, NOT THE BEAST...

Our Stamford salon celebrated it’s 1st birthday on 1st September, and what an amazing start we have had. Hopefully we will have another successful year!

With everything going so fast its hard to keep up with all the new products that are being launched, especially with Decleor, having had some successful launches of new products this year, they are still bringing out new prod-ucts even this close to Christmas (sorry I had to mention it).

Decleor have reformulated their Aroma Cleanse Range with some new and exciting additions.

Firstly, Eye Make Up Remover, is a non oily remover for all mas-caras even the most stubborn ones (I’ve tried it and it does work). Contains camellia oil to cleanse and rehydrate the eye area and cornflower water to help relieve tired, puffy eyes. It’s main action is to cleanse and the second is to treat the eyes.

Essential Cleansing Milk is now the main carrier of Neroli Oil. Using 1 st grade essential oil, this cleanser is designed to remove the most stubborn make up and clean the skin, but also repairing, hydrating, protecting and restruc-turing.

Essential Tonifying Lotion now contains Neroli Oil as well, along with Floral Waters. Toning the skin after cleansing is essential as it helps to rebalance the p.H in the skin but also helps to reduce blackheads and open pores. It also reinforces the effectiveness of using both the cleanser and toner.

How fast is this year going?

Hydra radiance Cleanser is a superb cleanser as it really lath-ers up and you can really work it into the skin to remove the day away! The main actions are to cleanse, exfoliate and hydrate the skin, containing neroli oil to repair and protect, papaya to exfoliate the dead skin and hylauronic acid to gorge the skin with moisture and plump the skin.

Fresh purifying Gel is new cleanser containing Ylang Ylang oil which helps to regulate sebum production and peppermint water to refresh the skin. Ideal for prob-lematic/ combination skin. It re-ally does leave your skin squeaky clean!!

Fresh Purifying Lotion also contains Ylang Ylang Oil, papaya to assist the removal of blackheads and mineral matifying powder to leave a matte finish on the skin.

Miscellar Water is the new 3 in 1 cleanser, that removes eye make up, cleanses and tones the skin. Ideal for the most reac-tive skin, containing Rose d’orient Oil which will soothe, calm and hydrate and Miscellar which will help to lift off make up allowing your skin to still receive a benefi-cial cleansing routine.

The new additions are Youth Cleaning Milk which is ideal for

dry to mature skin, containing magnolia which will fight free radicals and act as anti oxidant, Sweet Almond Oil to repair and protect and Hylauronic Acid to plump the skin.

Combined with the new Youth Lotion sees the first anti ageing toner for mature skin, includes the same ingredient as the cleanser, this is your perfect anti ageing answer!!!

Will I can’t believe Decleor have done it again and completely amazed me!! Absolutely loving the

new range and amazing to work with.

TUES 16 & WED 17 OCTOBERMovement and music are fused in a unique combination in the work of Richard Alston Dance Company. The New York Times called Alston, ‘The finest chore-ographer the British modern dance scene has ever known’, and his company is recognised internationally as a leading light in contemporary dance.

Richard Alston has chosen a diverse collection of compos-ers for the company’s eagerly-awaited return to Northampton. Shimmer is danced to the sun-drenched music of Ravel played live. Fashion designer Julien Macdonald’s fabulous, jewel-encrusted cobweb costumes illuminate dazzling flashes of choreography in a ravishingly

beautiful piece of theatre, hailed by The Times as ‘magical...Al-ston’s barefoot dancers look as if they have been sprinkled with fairy dust’.

Following his most recent work commissioned by Scot-tish Ballet to mark the Olym-pics, choreographer Martin Lawrance has created Madcap, a startlingly original new piece accompanied by the music of New York band Bang On A Can All-Stars. Richard Alston has also revived his effervescent The Devil in the Detail, inspired by the music of King of Ragtime Scott Joplin. Irresistible classics such as Maple Leaf Rag and The Entertainer are blended with the lightness and finesse of Alston’s choreography.

Tickets for the performances at 7.30pm on Tuesday 16 and Wednesday 17 October can be booked at the Box Office on 01604 624811 or online at www.royalandderngate.co.uk

TUES 9 – SAT 13 OCTOBERNorthern Ballet is performing Madame Butterfly at the Theatre Royal, Nottingham from 9 – 13 October 2012. Madame Butterfly is directed and choreographed by the company’s Artistic Director, David Nixon OBE, who originally created the piece on his wife, Yoko Ichino, the internationally renowned ballerina, who is now Ballet Mistress and Academy Associate Director at Northern Ballet. The Northern Ballet version of the production premiered at Leeds Grand Theatre in 2002.

Northern Ballet’s Madame Butterfly is based on the original Belasco play that inspired the great opera. This

Madame Butterflyheart-rending tale of love and infidelity, involves a young geisha who marries Lieutenant Pinkerton, a dashing naval officer, only to be abandoned by him while carrying his unborn child. The loyal Butterfly awaits her husband’s return, valiantly raising their son alone in a society which has ostracised her. When Pinkerton eventually returns to Nagaski with his new American wife, Butterfly’s doomed fate and that of her young son are sealed.

David Nixon commented on the production: “When creating Madame Butterfly, I wanted to incorporate an aesthetic of the traditional Japanese culture and music. I wanted to portray the dilemma of Butterfly who tries to change the perception of her

Our re-orchestration of Puccini’s wonderful music, to which we have incorporated traditional Japanese music, has resulted in a fluid and dramatically powerful score for this ballet, which blends traditional Japanese dance styles with classical ballet.”

WOW HAS A LOOK AT REGIONAL BUSINESS NEWS AND EVENTS

Do you want more business?

We see all kinds of people at our store in Market Harborough, from sole traders to members of large corporates. They ask us to produce anything from a business card one day to full blown marketing campaign the next. What they are really say-ing is “I want more business!”

We’ve been helping people win more business since we opened our doors in 2001. As a team of

creatives we look at each custom-er’s needs and deliver bespoke design and marketing solutions to drive sales to their door.

It’s a fact that good design sells. Bad design – or even just average design – may do more damage to your business than you realise. As a design com-pany, we understand the impor-tance of communication.

But why pay for design when

the latest software has re-ally clever wizards which let you knock up a design in no time? Well, design isn’t about knowing which buttons to press. It’s about creating the mood, delivering the message and making the sale. If you want to look professional, you should leave it to the profes-sionals. You wouldn’t build a house without foundations, so let us help you to create the foundations of

your business? From our offices in St Marys

Road we are able to offer a wide range of services including design, marketing, websites, signage, publishing, promotional items and printing. We also have a network of business advisors on hand to help with a range of issues from finance to law. So if you want more business, give us a call, it could be the best call you ever make!
