Acme Basin B Phosphorous Discharges
Acme Basin B Discharge Project The Problem with Current Conditions
Requires:
1. Improvements to C-1 canal to increase conveyance capacity and connect the C-1 canal to the C-51 Canal
2. Construction of new pump station AcmePS7 to pump from C-1 canal into C-51 Canal
3. Construction of detention area in Section 24 for temporary offline storage
4. Construction of new pump station AcmePS24 to fill the Section 24 detention area
Acme Basin B Discharge Project
Project Purpose
Acme Pumps #1 and #2 must be shut down on December 31, 2006 to comply with the Everglades Forever Act. Water in Acme Basin B must be re-routed north through Acme Basin A and discharged into the C-51 canal.

• C-1 Canal Improvements
– 3 miles of modified section for 67 to 220 cfs conveyance capacity
– Two 84” culverts at FPL crossing
– Meets DOT setback requirements for Flying Cow Road
• Pump Station AcmePS7
– Connects C-1 to C-51 canal
– 220 cfs (three 110 cfs pumps)
– Diesel
– Includes gravity discharge bay
Acme Basin B Discharge Project
C-1 Canal Improvements and AcmePS7
• Section 24
– Converts 365 acres of agricultural land to impoundment with upland areas and tree islands
– Storage of up to 5 feet of water (1,028 ac-ft)
– Two gated culverts (100 cfs each) for inflow/outflow
• Pump Station AcmePS24
– Inflow pump station
– 200 cfs (three 100 cfs pumps)
– Diesel
Acme Basin B Discharge Project
Section 24 and AcmePS24
Section 24 with additional
recreational components
• C-1 canal improvements and pump station AcmePS7– Allows Basin B water to be conveyed to the C-51 canal
and STA-1E
• Section 24 and AcmePS24– Provides temporary offline storage of 1,028 ac-ft of water
• Maintains flood protection in Acme Basin B• Reduces phosphorous load to C-51 canal / STA-1E• Potential water supply
– Provides a buffer between natural and developed areas• Converts 365 acres of agricultural land to upland and open water
habitat
– Provides recreational opportunities• Walking trails, overlooks, equestrian trails
Acme Basin B Discharge Project
Project Benefits
• Required C-1 Canal modifications are less than BODR– Modeling indicates that 220 cfs is not needed along entire length – flow incrementally
increases from 67 cfs at Structure #40 to 220 cfs at AcmePS7
• Realignment of Flying Cow Road minimized by using curb & gutter, guardrail, and steeper canal slopes
– Reduces cost
• AcmePS7 was moved 1,000 ft south from C-51 canal to near FPL crossing– Moves pump station away from residences
• AcmePS7 equipped with gravity discharge bay– Reduces cost of operation
• Pump stations will be diesel not electric– To meet District standards
• Section 24 primary purpose changed from passive wetland to detention area– Maintains flood attenuation and level of service locally and in the C-51 Canal
– Temporary storage provides regional benefits
– Reduces phosphorus load to C-51 Canal / STA-1E
• Section 24 seepage canal added– Protects against groundwater mounding
