MASS READINGS

SENTENCEJohn 10.14

‘I am the good shepherd,’ says the Lord. ‘I know my own and my own know me.’

COLLECTJesus, good shepherd of the sheep, by whom the lost are sought and guided into the fold: feed us and we shall be satisfied, heal us and we shall be whole, and lead us that we may be with you, where you live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

FIRST READING Acts 4.5-12The next day their rulers, elders, and scribes assembled in Jerusalem, with Annas the high priest, Caiaphas, John, and Alexander, and all who were of the high-priestly family. When they had made the prisoners stand in their midst, they inquired, ‘By what power or by what name did you do this?’ Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them, ‘Rulers of the people and elders, if we are questioned today because of a good deed done to someone who was sick and are asked how this man has been healed, let it be known to all of you, and to all the people of Israel, that this man is standing before you in good health by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified, whom God raised from the dead. This Jesus is “the stone that was rejected by you, the builders; it has become the

cornerstone.” There is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among mortals by which we must be saved.’

The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

Verses of the psalm are read alternately by a single reader and the congregation. A pause is observed at the colon for reflection. At Solemn High Mass, the choir sings the psalm.

PSALM 231. The Lord is my shepherd: therefore can I lack nothing.2. He will make me lie down in green pastures: and lead me beside still waters.3. He will refresh my soul: and guide me in right pathways for his name’s sake.4. Though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for you are with me, your rod and your staff comfort me.5. You spread a table before me in the face of those who trouble me: you have anointed my head with oil, and my cup shall be full.6. Surely your goodness and loving kindness will follow me all the days of my life: and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord for ever.

Please use these readings in conjunction with the coloured service booklet.Breakfast is served after the 7.30am Eucharist today. Refreshments are served after the 9.00am Sung Eucharist and the 10.30am Solemn High Mass, all in the Parish Hall. All are welcome. If you are a visitor please ask a sidesperson for directions.

MASS READINGSSECOND READING 1 John 3.16-24We know love by this, that the Son of God laid down his life for us – and we ought to lay down our lives for one another. How does God’s love abide in anyone who has the world’s goods and sees a brother or sister in need and yet refuses help? Little children, let us love, not in word or speech, but in truth and action. And by this we will know that we are from the truth and will reassure our hearts before him whenever our hearts condemn us; for God is greater than our hearts, and he knows everything.

Beloved, if our hearts do not condemn us, we have boldness before God; and we receive from him whatever we ask, because we obey his commandments and do what pleases God. And this is his commandment, that we should believe in the name of his Son Jesus Christ and love one another, just as he has commanded us. All who obey his commandments abide in him, and he abides in them. And by this we know that he abides in us, by the Spirit that he has given us.

The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

GOSPEL ACCLAMATIONAlleluia.I am the good Shepherd, says the Lord; the good Shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.Alleluia.

GOSPEL John 10.11-18The gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John.Glory to you, Lord Jesus Christ.Jesus said to the Pharisees: ‘I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. The hired hand, who is not the shepherd and does not own the sheep, sees the wolf coming and leaves the sheep and runs away – and the wolf snatches them and scatters them. The hired hand runs away because a hired hand does not care for the sheep. I am the good shepherd. I know my own and my own know me, just as the Father knows me and I know the Father. And I lay down my life for the sheep. I have other sheep that do not belong to this fold. I must bring them also, and they will listen to my voice. So there will be one flock, one shepherd. For this reason the Father loves me, because I lay down my life in order to take it up again. No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it up again. I have received this command from my Father.’

This is the gospel of the Lord,Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

OFFERTORY SENTENCEMy God, my God, eagerly will I seek you and in your name will I lift my hands on high. Alleluia.

COMMUNION SENTENCEThe good Shepherd is risen! He who laid down his life for his sheep, who died for his flock is risen. Alleluia.

Restoration AppealThe Christ Church St Laurence restoration project will begin during 2018, with most of the work expected to occur during 2019. The magnificent worship associated with the parish has only been possible because of the generosity and vision of previous generations. It is now time for the current parishioners to commit to a grand and courageous project for the benefit of the generations yet to come. In a rapidly changing city, Christ Church St Laurence has a very significant role to play, as we continue to provide a place of prayerfulness, peace and acceptance. The parish’s vitality and energy for almost 180 years has weathered many challenges and conflicts in society and in the church. We owe it to future generations to leave them a Christ Church St Laurence that continues to reflect a vibrant and enthusiastic expression of Anglicanism. Please consider how you can play your part in restoring and preserving this extraordinary tradition. The Restoration Appeal was launched recently at an informal gathering in the Parish Hall. During this launch, heritage architect Jean Wahl spoke appreciatively of the beauty of the church and outlined her approach to the project. Describing her investigations of earlier paintwork, Jean presented a captivating vision of the potential effect of fresh paint and re-designed lighting. As it unfolds through several phases, following on from our successful stained-glass restoration, this project and its funding will be with us for 2-3 years. The first phase will see the installation of a heating and cooling system, using air displacement through floor vents. Sophisticated in design, unobtrusive in appearance, and economical

in operation, this system meets our needs ideally. The character of our building nevertheless makes it expensive to install.Donations to our Restoration Fund in association with the National Trust are tax deductible. For details on how to donate, please see page 7.

Bathurst Rail PilgrimageThere are still places available for the rail pilgrimage to Bathurst on Saturday 26 May. If you are interested, please collect a brochure from the back of the church today. The deadline for registration is Sunday 6 May.

Asylum Seekers CentrePlease remember to support the collection of groceries for the Asylum Seekers Centre in Newtown. The basket and a list of suitable groceries is available at the West Door.

Name BadgesIf you requested a name badge please collect it today from the back of the church. Unfortunately we were unable to read some of the requests - please make sure you print your name clearly. Also, if you are not on the Parish Roll, please complete a form to ensure our records are up-to-date.

Behind the Scenes Organ TourOn Sunday 6 May, 2-4pm, Pitt Street Uniting Church will host a Behind The Scenes tour of their Hill & Son Organ as part of the National Trust’s Australian Heritage Festival. Darrell Pitchford will talk of its inner workings and John Aitchison FRCO, will play a selection of music.
