INTRODUCTION

Xenon was discovered by Sir William Ramsay, a Scottish chemist, and Morris M. Travers, an English chemist, on July 12, 1898, shortly after their discovery of the elements krypton and neon. Like krypton and neon, xenon was discovered through the study of liquefied air. It is present in the atmosphere to the extent of about one part in twenty million.

Xenon produces a brilliant white flash of light when it is excited electrically and is widely used in strobe lights. The light emitted from xenon lamps is also used to kill bacteria and to power ruby lasers.

Xenon and the other noble gasses, give off a large glowing light when excited by electric charges. Xenon is known to glow blue or give off a radiant white light if excited by electric currents.

The first Xenon application was a strobe light developed by Kenneth Germeshausen in 1935 and finds its best applications in the automotive and heavy equipment industry.

I/ XENON HID ILLUMINATION PRINCIPLE.

A/ What is XENON Light?

The xenon bulb is a micro-discharge bulb filled with a mixture of noble gases including xenon. The bulb has no filament, as is the case with a halogen bulb, but the light arc is created between two electrodes. As is the case with other gas discharge bulbs , the xenon bulb has an electronic starter(Ballast) for quick ignition, and requires electronic ballast to function properly.

B/ Why does a XENON bulb produce blue light?

The light produced by a Xenon bulb is in fact not blue but white, falling well within the international specifications for white light. The light only appears blue in comparison to the warmer (yellowed) light produced by halogen. It clearly appears white in comparison to daylight.

II/ ADVANTAGES OF XENON HID LAMPS VS HALOGEN

A/ XENON offers daylight

The xenon bulb provides more than twice the amount of light of a halogen bulb, while only consuming half the power (wattage). Therefore, the driver can see more clearly, and the vehicle has more power for other functions. Moreover, it is environmentally friendly, as less power means less fuel consumption. The clear white light produced by the xenon bulb is similar to daylight. Research has shown that this enables drivers to concentrate better. Furthermore, this particular light color reflects the road markings and signs better that conventional lighting. The xenon bulb also delivers a marked contribution to on and off road safety in the event of limited visibility due to weather conditions.

B/ XENON consumes less power

The bulb is highly efficient, running on roughly half the wattage of a comparable halogen unit while generating over 3 times more light. For example, a 50-watt halogen bulb will generate 25 lumens per 1 watt of power. This compares to 100 lumens per watt for a 35-watts Xenon bulb. As a result of this higher efficiency, the same size Xenon bulb creates an illuminated field that is not only brighter, but also covers 50% more area. And on top of that, Xenon lights run cool while offering 10 times the life of a halogen bulb.

C/ XENON rated life

Xenon technology requires a starting voltage of 35,000 to 40,000 volts to initiate an intense arc. This explains the welder's-arc-in-a-bottle comparison mentioned before as well as Xenon need for a ballast. After that arc is created, the bulb's voltage immediately drops to 35 volts to sustain the light. The Xenon bulb will burn for 3,000 or more hours, when compared to just 300 to 500 hours for halogen lights. The Halogen technology relies on a filament to generate light. And thin-as-hair filament wires are particularly susceptible to breakage due to heat, shock and vibration.
