The recent construction of the interchange of Highway I64 and McCausland Avenue has remaindered a landscape unused except for a storm retention system. It is in this territory this project explains the place-making potential of the echo.

The landscape of the highway is extended into the space of the project. The voice of the neighborhood is broadened into this new landscape and is modulated as architecture----one that has returned the space to neighborhood, not as an object resting upon the site, but itself a new vital landscape---a collecting of community activities integrating the highway, the layered landscape and the neighborhood itself.

Thinking highway is a positive space, a positive barrier, figures from neighborhood are stepping forward to it, which act like the echoes playing back and forth in the valley.
When it meets highway, the sound reflects. Difference of frequency makes the beauty of echo.
The landscape, site, ground no longer served as a passive scenographic element upon with a discrete architecture which was placed or superimposed.
The result is the creation of porous, diffuse. The wrapped empty space or ground here, therefore transferring background to the interior.
Echoes are playing in this space, a scenario of the building showing up.
The project's design and planning focus on a thorough understanding of the local context. The building responds to existing scales.
The sound of neighborhood footprints are entering into the site.

The Rhythm of Venetian Labyrinth
Outdoor is indoor, indoor is outdoor. The rhythm of city space impressed me because every street or lane is a vivid and dynamic architectural space for gathering, rather than a pathway people walking through.Different spaces are layering together, being a crescendo you want to read.
21
This new Public Archive is to be made as an "addition" to Le Corbusier's unbuilt project Venice Hospital. He developed the unique pinwheeling circulation diagram, the layered mat-building, from his studies of the urban life fabric of Venice. Architecture is not an isolated object, but as an addition to a preexisting inhabited context.
I begin to reestablish Le Corbusier's philosophical design, rediscover the fundamental principles of hospital project. With my personal experience in Venice, I start this project with this concept--Book Street

Labyrinth with a clear logic, could provide people a special journey in the BOOK MAZE with interesting space comes up, rather than making them lost their way. My pin wheeling circulation are connected to a main "road", from entrance to the meeting space opened to the sea, which indicates a route from darkness in maze to brightness close to sea.

The book "street" like a city wall, actually is a double wall system-- the hanging outside wall makes this building look like a floating box above the sea.

With a history of over 600 years, Shitang village has many valuable buildings with the unique construction type. We documented these historic heritages and conducted planning and design of preservation and renovation of Shitang Village. Our goal is converting some buildings into new public culture space that could represent this village, finding a balance in preservation and tourism development in modern days.
This project lasted more than one year for our team to do research and design. And this process is still being built. Under a small budge we tried to lower the cost by using local material and ease the way of construction, most importantly, to have local people involved in this process. This is our attitude for a renovation design in China.

In major cities of China, urbanization fast the speed of demolishment of urban village, which has been providing affordable houses for new migrant job seekers or workers. This proposal, inspired by tree house, is a collective house units with flexible furniture inside. As a landscape, it could be installed anywhere in the empty space left over by the over development, also a city problem in urbanization of China.
When the urban village is demolished, where do people go?
