Week 1 Tutorial Activity Topic: Compression and Tension Both compression and tension are structural features associated with physics. Compression Tension Description When compression occurs, gravitational forces are pushing against the object. When tension occurs gravitational forces are pulling away from the object. This is usually carried out through a string, cable or chain. Diagram Link between Content and Building Blocks Activity The building blocks activity in the first tutorial provided a practical example of compression and how the forces of compression can be tested by large structures. The task involved building a tall structure with building blocks and testing how many blocks could then be removed before the structure fell. Photo series of our structure and Load paths () Description and Analysis of the Construction System Blocks were not placed too close together, a space was allowed to aid in the stability of the building. Where blocks had been placed too close together, the structure weakened and these were the regions that gave way when the structure collapsed. Efficiency of Material The building blocks material was appropriate for the task undertaken. The size of the blocks allowed for a stable yet tall structure and had enough grip and friction for the forces of compression to occur. The blocks were also lightweight. 1 st stage Started building the structure by leaving a whole for the figurine – however this resulted in the challenge of closing the roof 2 nd stage A secondary arch was built as well as a bridge 3 rd stage We began building an offshoot structure and removed the blocks to make an arch 4 th stage Created a pathway and steps for the bridge 5 th stage The structure was finished and we stacked the last few blocks at the top 6 th stage After removing between 20 and 30 blocks the structure collapsed towards the weaker side

Link  between  Content  and  Building  Blocks  Activity    The  building  blocks  activity  in  the  first  tutorial  provided  a  practical  example  of  compression  and  how  the  forces  of  compression  can  be  tested  by  large  structures.    The  task  involved  building  a  tall  structure  with  building  blocks  and  testing  how  many  blocks  could  then  be  removed  before  the  structure  fell.      Photo  series  of  our  structure  and  Load  paths  (à)

Description  and  Analysis  of  the  Construction  System

Blocks  were  not  placed  too  close  together,  a  space  was  allowed  to  aid  in  the  stability  of  the  building.

1st  stage  Started  building  the  structure  by  leaving  a  whole  for  the  figurine  –  however  this  resulted  in  the  challenge  of  closing  the  roof

2nd  stage  A  secondary  arch  was  built  as  well  as  a  bridge

3rd  stage  We  began  building  an  offshoot  structure  and  removed  the  blocks  to  make  an  arch

4th  stage  Created  a  pathway  and  steps  for  the  bridge

5th  stage  The  structure  was  finished  and  we  stacked  the  last  few  blocks  at  the  top

6th  stage  After  removing  between  20  and  30  blocks  the  structure  collapsed  towards  the  weaker  side
