Award of the Diploma

• As a general guide a score of 24 out of a possible 45 points will result in the awarding of the IB Diploma.

• However it is more complicated than that.

• There are two sets of scores as follows:

A total score of 24-27 points

• A numeric grade is awarded to all six subjects• CAS requirements are met• A grade of A-E is awarded to TOK and Extended

Essay with at least a D in each• No grade 1 in any subject• No grade 2 in any HL subject• No more than 3 grades 3 or below• At least 12 points in HL subjects• At least 9 points in SL subjects

A total score of 28 points and above

• A numeric grade is awarded to all six subjects• CAS requirements are met• A grade of A-E is awarded to TOK and Extended

IB Assessment Procedures

• Students take written exams at end of programme

• Exams are marked by external IB examiners• Students complete internal assessment tasks• Either marked in school and the moderated by

external moderators• Or • Sent directly to external examiners

How is a score reached

• Examinations are graded against absolute standards (assessment criteria)

• Internal Assessments (IA) are also assessed against criteria.

• Scores from examinations and IA are combined and then scales against grade boundaries

• Final subject score out of 7

What do the scores mean

• 7 Excellent A+• 6 Very good A• 5 Good B• 4 Satisfactory C• 3 Mediocre D• 2 Poor E+• 1 Very poor E

• Diploma 24 points– Deakin University B.Com 24 points

• Good university 28-36 points– Melbourne University B.Com 31-34– Monash University B.Com 28

• Top university 37- 40 points– Cambridge University B. Eco 38-42 points

• 45 points max number (0.2% candidates)
