Message from the DEAN OF STUDIES

Year 1 1

Receiving results back from their first Assessment block can be a challenging time for students. Some students that have achieved highly up to this stage may find these results a little confronting. There will be those that are very happy with their results to those that are quite disappointed in their achievement.

The Year 11 Course is an important year for students in the course content they are working through. Just as important is becoming familiar with processes of major Assessment tasks, what amount of preparation is necessary, how they are achieving and how that relates to the amount of effort and preparation that they have completed.

Student results at this stage of their senior studies should be very much about reflecting on what work they have done and their level of application to each subject. There is a great opportunity to reassess these areas if the outcome of these assessments are not at a level that they would like.

I encourage all Year 11 to stop, reflect, reassess their level of application, set goals, set out a plan as they move toward the end of Year 11 at the end of Term 3. I encourage parents to sit with their child to gauge their achievement and their feeling and thoughts about how they are travelling. This can be difficult at times, particularly when our urge is to try to ‘enforce’ our wishes. The biggest thing at the moment is to listen, provide support and when appropriate gentle advice.

Year 11 Reports will be published on the Compass Portal for parents to access on Monday, 29 June. At the same time parents will be able to make appointments with teachers for interviews that will be held at the College Hall on Thursday, 5 July.

Parents will receive a letter in the week prior to Monday, 29 June that outlines how to access the Compass Portal. There will also be information of the

process to find your child’s report and how to make an appointment using the online portal through Compass. Year 12 Students should be working hard in their subjects as they head toward their Trial Examinations in Week 3 of next term. The upcoming term break should be targeted as a time to prepare for these important examinations. Students should be speaking with their teachers about appropriate preparation, any areas of concern with the content and where appropriate any specific help with particular areas of the course.

An Examination Timetable will be available before the end of this term. I strongly encourage all students to create a plan for their preparation. This should include all their activities that they are committed to with the emphasis on their study and preparation. Students should go through this with their parents to establish what is going to be in place over the coming weeks and for the term break

Nura Gili Indigenous

Winter School University of

New South Wales

I am delighted to be able to announce that Samuel Towney has been awarded entry into the University of New South Wales Nura Gili Indigenous Program Winter School 2018. Sam will spend a week at the University of NSW from 9 to 16 July, undertaking opportunities to

broaden his understanding and appreciation of mathematics and the sciences. Access to this program is very selective with 6500 applications being made, and only 100 students being successful. Throughout the week-long residential program, Sam will be introduced to tertiary studies in the discipline areas of his choice, mathematics and science, while also experiencing university life with the other 99 Indigenous students. He will be guided by people who are committed to nurturing their leadership, growth and development with a comprehensive, fun and engaging program of activities. Sam will be mentored by Indigenous students currently studying at UNSW, along with graduates, academics and experts from the industry, as well as having the opportunity to meet staff from the university who can help them identify his areas of interest, clarify his subject choices and provide further information on gaining entry into their degree. Nura Gili strives for excellence in educational services and works towards assuring participation and access to all the programs it offers. The staff and students at Nura Gili support community outreach programs to actively spread the message of the availability of tertiary studies. Congratulations Sam! Mr Frank Hales Aboriginal Support Teacher

“Give a little. Change a lot” is this year’s theme for National Volunteer’s week, which was celebrated by The Catholic Diocese of Maitland-Newcastle at a recent morning tea. In recognition of the outstanding contribution of the staff and students of St Francis Xavier’s College to the DARA Van, fourteen students attended this event, accompanied by Ms Unie and Ms Beletich. The DARA Van feeds approximately 100 people in our local area each week. Its operation is dependent on approximately 70 volunteers from our school community, which has provided service to “The Van” for some thirty years. Ms Unie and Ms Beletich were presented with a Diocesan Volunteer Award for their coordination of the DARA Van for the past four years, which they accepted as representatives of all volunteers at St Francis Xavier’s College.

Year 11 Afternoon Music Concert

Prior to the Year 11 Mid Year Exams, some of our Year 11 music students performed in an afternoon concert in 'The Sound Trap'. Congratulations to the following students who accepted the opportunity to perform, and their music was most enjoyable for the parents and friends in the audience. Some students were performing in the concert for the first time on a stage and even though there were some nerves, it was obvious that they were growing in strength and confidence. The music staff are very proud of these students.

Year 12 Electives Assessment Task All Year 12 music students are preparing for their Elective Assessment Task which will involve a possible combination of Performances, Compositions and Musicology Viva Voce discussions. The music staff recommend that the students use the music rooms to rehearse and workshop their Electives before school, at lunchtime and in the afternoon tea breaks each day. The music rooms are open after school on a Wednesday as well, so the music staff can work with the students in their endeavour to prepare and polish their performances.

ClickView

Earlier this term SFX took out a subscription to ClickView, a video streaming teaching and learning resource. Teachers can use videos in class, create interactive clips from videos and TV shows, and they can share videos with students and set viewing for homework. Access to ClickView's online platform is via students' school logins--go to online.clickview.com.au and enter your school email address, select SFX from the list of schools, then enter your school login details if requested. Students can also download the ClickView mobile app which allows them to download set viewing using the school WiFi, and then watch it at home offline. Reading for enjoyment in the library

Towards the end of Term 1 the library conducted a survey (with prizes on offer for participants) to find out what our staff and students would like to see in a 'Reading Nook' in the library. We received over 70 suggestions that included books, magazines, and other items such as crossword puzzles and colouring-in books. We also asked for, and received, alternative suggestions for the name of the reading nook. We are now working on making this initiative a reality. We're busily ordering reading material to include (stock is steadily arriving and being made ready for borrowing), and we're currently sourcing quotes for shelving. It will take a little while to pull everything together, but we hope it won't be too much longer.

Author visit Coming up in June, Dr Darren Morton will be visiting the library to talk about the concepts in his book Live More Happy. He will discuss simple, physiologically-based, scientifically-proven ways to lift your mood and feel happier, and will also talk about the process of writing and publishing a book. He is an engaging speaker who is passionate about health and well being, and we hope many staff and students will take the opportunity to hear him. Searching for a book? To find out what's available in the library, you can search the 'Oliver library catalogue', which can be found on the list of links on the school portal. This online facility allows you to search the catalogue from anywhere, at anytime. The library staff will be happy to help you find this link.

Maths – is it worthwhile?

The School of Mathematics and Statistics from Sydney University hosted a panel session where attendees were invited to submit questions to University of Sydney academics.

Key question was ‘Will math enable you to get a good job?’

Here is how our panel responded:

“According to CareerCast, four out of the top six best jobs of 2017 were maths and stats jobs.” Professor Jacqui Ramagge

“There are so many different areas in which maths is essential – I’ve been blown away by how many industries want to employ mathematicians.

“Mathematics is a universal language – it opens doors to job opportunities around the world.” Dr Michelle Dunbar

“Maths is one of the most employable fields. All of the major increases being predicted in jobs of the next 15 to 20 years require maths.” Professor Andrew Mathas Newcastle University Schools Visit Day
