PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

Dear parents and friends of our Essex Heights community,

Year 6 Camp - Forest Lodge Farm

On Wednesday I joined the Year 6 students at Forest Lodge Farm in South Gippsland for their three day camp. By going on Wednesday I was able to see both Year 6 groups. All the students were very happy and having a great time. The program allows for the children to have a thorough orientation of the camp site before they begin their rotation through many exciting group activities, i.e. the Flying Fox, The Giant Swing, Archery, the rope course, canoeing and bush cooking. The activity groups are also responsible for preparation and cleaning up duties before and after meals.

The facilities at Forest Lodge Farm are excellent, and the children are eating well, having fun and working together well in teams and also as a Year 6 group. I really enjoyed the opportunity to spend some time with the children outside of school, and it was so pleasing to see their bright smiling faces throughout the day.

Many thanks to Felicity O’Flynn for organising the camp, and to the rest of the staff, Moira Lennon, Anita Dix, Ben Wooster, Matthew Appleby, Chris Cavill and Ina Kuehlich, for their participation, leadership and support. Special thanks must go to Janet McGinn for volunteering her whole week to join in with both camp groups.

Year 5 Camp - Sovereign Hill

This week our Year 5 students were on camp at Sovereign Hill in Ballarat. On Tuesday I visited and spent the day with them. All the children were really enjoying themselves and learning so much about life on the goldfields. They were happy, engaged and interested in every activity. The different groups rotated around many activities, including visiting the Red Hill Mine, gold smelting, and candle making. The most popular activity though was the panning for gold. The children and the staff were intent on finding their first fortune. It was amazing to see how well some did and they became very proficient at panning.

On Monday night the children experienced the new sound and light show which explains how gold is created through nuclear fusion, the impact of the gold rush on the indigenous population at the time, and the events of the Eureka Stockade. The children really enjoyed this audio visual presentation. This camp really immerses the children into the 1850s, and as a result, they become more engaged in their history curriculum.

Many thanks to Emma Ung for organising the camp, and to the rest of the staff, Maria Capsalis, Kathy Halliday, Jenny Austin, Marita Steward, Aubrey Hudson and Jenny Sellick, for their participation, leadership and support. Special thanks also to Georgia Albertella, a teacher in training, who volunteered to attend for the three days.

Mother’s Day Breakfast & Stall

It was great to attend the Mother’s Day Breakfast yesterday. This was an opportunity for the school to say thanks to the Mums, Grandmothers and special friends for helping the school and the children on a regular basis. The Hall was full of Mums and very excited ‘hungry’ children, all ready to join into the celebration of Mother’s Day. The buffet breakfast had a wide range of food options and was really well presented. The atmosphere in the hall was filled with chatter and fun. This special event gave families a chance to mingle and enjoy a relaxed morning together. The raffle/door prize was also a great success, and four Mums received lovely prizes. A big thanks to James Douglas and the team of fathers who prepared the breakfast and did a great job of presenting, organising and cleaning up. Special thanks to the PFA for coordinating the event and the prizes.

Thanks again to our wonderful PFA who also planned and organised today’s Mother’s Day Stall. The children loved being able to shop for their Mum and they took great care over their gift selection.

NAPLAN

The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) involves students in Years 3 and 5 from all states and territories in Australia. NAPLAN testing will take place next week on Tuesday 15th May, Wednesday 16th May and Thursday 17th May.

Students’ will be assessed on their skills in reading, writing, language conventions (spelling, punctuation and grammar) and numeracy. These national test results provide information on how your child is progressing and performing in the key areas of literacy and numeracy and help to support improvements in teaching to benefit your child.

It is very timely to remember that NAPLAN is an assessment of children at one point in time. It is important but not the only assessment of the children’s learning. The teachers conduct multiple assessments throughout the year and can give you detailed information about how your child is progressing.

Parents can support their children to be ready to participate in these assessment tasks by making a smooth, calm start to each day. Simple tasks such as ensuring that your child has breakfast before coming to school and that children arrive to school on time can make a big difference. Two correct answers can be the difference between medium growth and high growth, so a good start to the day and plenty of sleep throughout the week can be enough to help your child achieve their best.

Principal’s Report continued

We wish all the Mums, grandmothers and special friends a wonderful and ‘relaxing’ day on Sunday. I hope you all get spoilt!!!!!

George Perini Principal

Playground Supervision

I would like to remind all parents that the yard is not supervised by staff before 8.45am. This means that children should not be dropped off at school before 8.30am. If you need to leave the children before that time, they should be booked into the Before School Care program, and you can make that booking by ringing 9807 2615. Likewise, the yard after school is supervised until 3.45pm. We strongly discourage you to leave chil-dren alone to play in the school grounds or on the Council fitness station after 3.45pm. Therefore, if you will be later than that, your children should be booked into our excellent After School Care program.

Sayembara Lisan

Tomorrow (Saturday 11th May) some of our Indonesian students will participate in the Sayembara Lisan - Indonesian Speaking Competition at Huntingtower School. For some weeks now, the children have been very busy practicing, and we wish them all well in the competition. Good Luck to everyone!!

School Tours & 2020 Enrolment

Every Thursday and Friday I am conducting school tours for prospective families to join us in 2020. If you have children who will be starting Prep at Essex Heights in 2020, please ensure an enrolment form is lodged at the Office by the end of May. This will enable us to begin planning for next year, and ensure your child can fully participate in our school transition program.

EHPS has previously partnered with UNSW Global to offer its annual ICAS Assessments for Years 3 to 6. With the introduction of Reach Assessments in 2019, we have identified that these assessments will provide us with the most comprehensive view of student learning, and will therefore replace ICAS in our assessment strategy. Please be assured that the impact of this change will be minimal, and we will continue to receive the same benefits from Reach Assessments that we did from ICAS.

In previous years ICAS have been paper assessments, however the Reach Assessments will be entirely online.

The dates for the online Reach Assessments will be:

Students are not able to sit the tests outside of the official sitting dates.

Information, including the permission form, has been published on Compass. The permission form along with payment must be received by the student’s teacher no later than next Monday, 13th May.

Compassion

Here at our school we want to put our empathy into action. This is called showing compassion. When we’re able to understand how someone else is feeling and do something to show we understand, we are showing that person compassion. Listening, saying kind words, and helping are three ways to show compassion. Take a moment now to think about how you can show compassion to someone today. Then find a way to do it during the day.

Year 1 Bugs, Bugs, Bugs Exhibition & IMAX 3D Movie

As part of our Integrated Unit ‘Schoolyard Safari’, Year 1 students will visit the Melbourne Museum Bug Lab Exhibition and the IMAX 3D theatre to view Flight of the Butterflies on Thursday 6th June. The children will investigate the basic structure and function of invertebrates, their habitats, life cycles and adaptations. In the Bugs, Bugs, Bugs! hands-on program, students examine the external features of real

insects, spiders and other arthropods, using a hand lens to sort and classify them scientifically and learn about classification. Students will also learn how Museum scientists look after the insect collection. Students will engage with science inquiry skills and become ‘scientists’ when they observe specimens to make predictions about what is a bug, what is an insect, and how is a spider different to an insect.

In Flight of the Butterflies 3D Movie at IMAX, students will experience the remarkable Monarch butterfly migration in 3D and learn about the determined scientist who spent 40 years trying to discover exactly where the butterflies mysteriously disappeared when they flew south for winter. The children will enjoy the beautiful and colourful world of butterflies while unlocking the secrets of the greatest migration on earth.

Information has been published on Compass; consent and payment is due by Thursday 30th May.

Year 2 Mont De Lancey Excursion

This term, our focus is on 'The Past and the Present'. Our excursion to Mont De Lancey Historic Homestead will provide the students with an experience of school life in the past. 2T and 2PB will be attending on Tuesday 14th May, and 2D and 2LD will be attending on Wednesday 15th May.

Information has been published on Compass; consent and payment is due by today, Friday 10th May.

Year 5 Camp to Sovereign Hill

The Year 5s had a wonderful trip to the Goldfields at Sovereign Hill. We were lucky to have lovely weather for the first few days of our activities.

The students enthusiastically participated in role-play, gold mine tours, panning for gold, saw how gold is made pure, old fashioned bowling, candle making and more.

We watched a 3D movie of the Big Bang Theory and how gold was first formed on Earth. It was very interesting to see the Indigenous relationship to the land that became Ballarat and the goldfields. After that we watched the Sound and Light Show of the Eureka Rebellion. It was very realistic, loud and colourful and depicted the times of the 1850’s clearly. The students learnt a lot about the impact of the Gold Rush on the colony, immigration, and relationships between different migration groups as well as the impact upon the indigenous local people.

The teachers were very impressed with the values, behaviour and friendly and inclusive nature shown by the Essex Heights students. They are to be congratulated for being such an engaged and terrific cohort to take away on a camp.
