From the PrincipalDear Parents and Guardians,

Our Galen community has been deeply saddened by the sudden and untimely death of Emma Woodhead, a Year 10 student at Galen.

Emma passed away at home overnight last Friday. While the cause of death is as yet unconfirmed it is known that Emma had a history of epilepsy. A formal finding will be made in the following days.

We have been able to gather on two occasions as a Galen community since we received this sad news. Once on Sunday in the Max Fletcher Auditorium which was attended by around 90 people, a mixture of students, staff and parents. The second gathering was as a whole school on Tuesday morning when over 1,000 people, mainly students and staff, gathered in the stadium for a liturgy to mark Emma’s passing.

The Galen Wellbeing Team of Kate Meehan, Luke Ahrens, Lisa Power and Therese Rodway has been available for students and staff and will continue so for the next week. The auditorium has been set aside as a quiet place of reflection for this time.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Emma’s family, especially her mother, Leisa, and step-father Jonathan, siblings Molly, Frazer and Jess, and grandparents, Julie and Paul.

May she rest in the peace of Christ.

Galen Debutante BallNew scarves help women of Peru rise

above povertyNew Galen scarves have just arrived at school in time for the chill of Winter! Our scarves are made by a fair trade company called ‘Tika’, who help women work for a better future. By buying a Galen scarve, you’ll be helping provide a sustainable income to a group of women in one of the poorest districts of Peru, (San Martin de Porres, Lima).

A Galen scarve costs $15.00. Not only will you be keeping warm with Galen’s official school uniform scarve, you’ll also be helping women less fortunate to work towards a better life for themselves and their families... That’s $15.00 well spent!

Above: Olivia Richards and Callum Spencer beat the morning chill with new Galen scarves.

It is that time again, where we are very excited to present the Anything Goes Talent Quest for the third year. A busy week and a half of audi-tions has revealed a great variety of talent among our students at Galen in years 7 through to 12 in dance, singing, instrumental, and ensemble. The support and co-operation shown by students who came to watch was very much appreciated, and all contestants are to be congratulated for their willingness to be involved and have a go.

We are now looking forward to a terrific night of entertainment on June 23rd when the final contestants appear on stage at the WPAC to showcase their talent. Local talent including Meika Staley, Amy Faithfull and Sarah Cunningham have agreed to volunteer their time for judging, and we will have some very special guest performances.

Tickets are now on sale at a cost of $15 per ticket. Ticket sales are already going well, so please be quick and don’t miss out!

Victorian Indonesian Statewide Speaking Competition (Sayembara Lisan)

On Saturday the 23rd of May, 18 students represented Galen Catholic College in the Sayembara Lisan Statewide Competition held at Melbourne University.

These students had previously competed in the Regional Competition amongst students from the Wangaratta District, in order to earn a place in the Statewide Competition. The students practised consistently at recess, lunch and class time in the lead up to the Statewide competition.

The atmosphere at Melbourne University was quite daunting, with a record number of 800 students from Victoria participating in the competition! Our students were required to recite a story, a speech about their friends, family or their pets for approximately 1-2 minutes. Then they needed to answer a series of rehearsed and unrehearsed questions regarding the topics they had previously spoken about for a further 5 minutes.

On behalf of Galen Catholic College, we would like to congratulate the 18 students who were selected for the State Competition for their outstanding efforts in preparing for and participating in the competition. Furthermore, the following students received a placing in the Victorian Statewide Sayembara Lisan Competition. This is a tremendous effort considering some students were competing against students with Indonesian heritage.

Year 8 Indonesian (Beginning):3rd - Ebony Watson (pictured far right)

Year 9 Indonesian (Beginning):Highly Commended - Billie Taylor

These students were invited to attend an awards ceremony at the University of Melbourne, in the Elisabeth Murdoch Theatre on Friday 5th June. A representative from the Indonesian consulate in Melbourne presented them with their certificates, prizes and badges.

Year 11 VCAL hosts Teddy Bear’s Picnic

On Wednesday the 3rd of June, Miss. Smith’s Year 11 VCAL students conducted a Teddy Bear’s Picnic with the Foundation, Grade 1 and Grade 2 students from Our Lady’s Primary School. Students spent time planning and organising the activities and games to play with the primary school students. Some of the activities they enjoyed were: Duck Duck Bear, What’s the time Mr. Bear, Scavenger hunt, Freeze, and lastly the teddy bear piñata. We also enjoyed a lovely morning tea with the students. A great effort by everyone involved.

“I really enjoyed medieval day, I found it very interesting and fun. The activities we did were costumes and life style. I found out a lot about how people were influenced into wearing certain things. Some of us had the opportunity to dress up as peasants, monks, merchants, nobles, kings, queens and bishops. We also learnt about armour and weapons. I found this to be really interesting because we learnt about how if you were richer the better your weapons and armour would be and we also got to try on the armour and the chain mail was heavier then I expected. I don’t understand how the knights could wear it for the whole day, I felt so sorry for the squires!”Ebony Watson

“I had a lot of fun doing the medieval day, I felt that I learnt a lot. I dressed up as a medieval peasant, and I am now interested in looking into history more. I never knew how much work went into medieval lives, they had it a lot worse off than us.”Kie Sunderland

A Medieval Day for Year 8s at GalenLast Wednesday Year 8 students at Galen travelled back in time to experience what life in Medieval times would have been like with the assistance of education group, History Up Close. Students participated in activities includ-ing arms and armor, took part in swordplay and experienced mini battles behind wooden shields. While dressing up in period costume, students had mini immersions with medieval lifestyle choices including medieval employment and servitude. Students also took part in medieval music, dance and games.

Through hands-on learning, Year 8 student Zachary Peters felt that it gave him a better understand-ing of the middle ages, “It helped us picture the lifestyle and time of place that these people would have lived in, the clothes they wore and music they listened to.

Likewise, student Alexander Mc-Quade also added, “It was funny to see what the medieval people did to entertain themselves and especially the tavern games we got to try out. It was shocking to find out how poorly lower class people were treated and how much they worked to survive and provide for their family. Above: Gary Bannister (History Up Close teacher) gave Callum Spencer and

Thomas Metcalfe an engaging insight into Medieval armor and weapons used in battles.

Galen College won the year 7 boys Upper Hume soccer competition held at the Latrobe University grounds on Thursday the 11th of June.

In their first game Galen defeated Catholic College Wodonga 5-0. James O’Callaghan had a great start to his day scoring 3 goals with Joel McGennisken and Adam Jordan scoring one each. Sam Vandersteeg, Henry Silva and Xavier Loki played well in defence and Pat Speed was also influential.

In game two Galen played out an entertaining one all draw with Wodonga Middle Years Huon Campus. Both teams had plenty of chances to score before Adam Jordan found the back of the net for Galen just before half time. That goal looked like it would be enough to secure victory until the opposition scored in the last minute. Keeper Sam Berenger had an outstanding game and was just pipped for best on ground hon-ors by Pat Speed. Joel McGennisken worked hard in the midfield and soccer debutants Ethan Roach and Mitchell Carson worked their way into the game.

Galen hit top form in game 3 against Marian College Myrtleford who had won their first two games. Galen dominated from start to finish winning easily 6-0. Adam Jordan and Joel McGennisken scored two each while Will Gulbin and James O’Callaghan finished with one each. The highlight of this big win was the excellent form shown by Will Gulbin, Harry Lindsay and Hayden Pearson.

The final round saw the two undefeated sides, Galen and Victory Lutheran College play against each other. A fine cross from Tim Seeger put the ball on a plate for James O’Callaghan to put Galen one up. However, things were not looking good when Victory scored the next 2 goals. The arrival of the Galen girls team, fresh from their own title winning efforts, seemed to inspire the boys with James O’Callaghan finding the back of the net from close range. Final score 2-2. Better players during this game were Pat Speed, Hayden Pearson, Sam Berenger and Sam Vandersteeg. This result meant that Galen were the overall winners of the competition.

Everyone played well at various time during the day with special mention to Pat Speed, Hayden Pearson, Joel McGennisken, Sam Berenger, James O’Callaghan and Sam Vandersteeg who were very good in every match.

A big thanks to Louis Gorman and Josh Masters for being our linesmen and to Joe Curcio who also helped out.

Thank you also to John, Coral and Katrina West and Mr Vandersteeg for travelling to Wodonga to support the Galen boys. Mrs West has promised to bake the coach a delicious cake for the regional finals!

Every Victorian child should have access to the world of learning opportunities that exist beyond the classroom. The Camps, Sports and Excursions Fund will ensure that no student will miss out on the opportunity to join their classmates for important, educational and fun activities.

School camps provide children with inspiring experiences in the great outdoors, excursions encourage a deeper understanding of how the world works and sports teach teamwork, discipline and leadership. All are part of a healthy curriculum.

CSEF will be provided by the Victorian Government to assist eligible families to cover the costs of school trips, camps and sporting activities.

If you hold a valid means-tested concession card or are a temporary foster parent, you may be eligible for CSEF. The allowance will be paid to the school to use towards expenses relating to camps, excursions, or sporting activities for the benefit of your child.

The annual CSEF amount per student will be:

• $125 for primary school students

• $225 for secondary school students.
