Residents visiting the new Bullitt Center, the greenest building in the world, discover the future of low impact environmental housing.

WE ARE PREPARING TO SERVE MORE SENIORS

Answering a growing need for affordable se-nior housing, Northaven purchased land adjacent to our existing campus and we are now in the zoning, permitting and design phase. We have created a partnership with Providence Health & Services who will operate a clinic within our new building that will provide comprehen-sive health and social services and day care to Medicaid dependent seniors in North Seattle.

We secured a $1.9M loan from Impact Capital to help secure the land and get us through the pre-development phase. In the spirit of our Founders who 40 years ago used their homes as collateral to secure a HUD loan to build Northaven Independent Living, our Board of Trustees and Board of Directors provided $750,000 in personal loans to the Northaven Foundation to leverage the Impact Capital loan.

Funding for the new project will come primarily from state and city affordable housing grants and loans, corporate investors who receive tax benefits for investing in affordable housing and foundation grants.

WELLNESSResidents take charge of their health, wellness and mental engagement by staying active, engaged and healthy through exercise, participation in educational programs, brain fitness activities, music, walks and healthy nutrition.

Exercise increases both physical and emotional health. Resident, Diane McNeal (age 73), participates in our exercise classes 5 days a week.  Diane has lost 42 lbs., no longer needs an inhaler and does not need her walker as much.  She especially loves Tai Chi, “It slows my mind and puts me in a relaxed and meditative state.”

› About 45% of our residents participate in our fitness program of 18 classes a week, ranging from strength training to Tai Chi. 

› Many of our residents attribute their improved health to the fitness program here.

HEALTHY NUTRITION ON A BUDGET OF $7.10

Food matters. Nutrition is critical to the overall health of our seniors and Northaven staff take it seriously. With a budget of $7.10 per meal they provide 240 meals per day for dinner alone. A changing resident profile means more choices and lifestyles to accommodate including diabetic, gluten free and dairy free diets as well as managing garlic and yeast allergies. And lacto-ovo, vegan, pescetarian, Atkins, South Beach and Paleo life choices. A cultural smorgasbord of staff offers an array of cuisine from traditional American to Japanese, Ethiopian, German, English, French, Mexican, Peruvian and Italian inspired dishes.

ON BOARD WITH SEATTLE’S NEW COMPOSTRECYCLING…KEEPING UP WITH CHANGENorthaven residents get on board with Seattle’s new mandatory food waste recycling. It has been a process of learning, adjusting, accepting, complying, and cooperating.

An active group of volunteers, led by resident Joni Metcalf, has monitored waste bins and assisted residents, even making personal calls to explain recycling and established a program for new residents.

Mason Giem at Seattle Public Utilities comment-ed, “The Northaven community did an amazing job of creating recycling and composting teams that educated residents and enforced the waste disposal guidelines and if it weren’t for their help this program would not have been a success.”

WIREDA $40,000 grant from the Employees Community Fund of Boeing Puget Sound and a City of Seattle Technology grant for $18,967 allowed us to wire our entire com-munity for Wi-Fi, upgrade staff computers, make more computers, laptops and tablets available for residents to use and provide training to residents and staff.

My computer is my life. When you age you lose things. First I lost my car, then when I came here my computer. I love it here and getting Wi–Fi just amplifies it for me.

I cannot get out a lot so getting this has helped me reconnect with friends and my family. I use it a lot to look up medical information. I am so happy the employees at Boeing gave Wi-Fi to us.

ARRYVE, a consulting firm, provided Northaven with

300 hours of pro bono consulting time worth $32,000. The result of the project was a designed community service outreach program to help seniors in the neighborhoods around us live independently longer in their own homes.
