“When I was finally declared cancer free in late 2003, I remember believing the old cliché “Today is the first day of the rest of my life.” I had no inkling that my time away from hospital beds, IVs, chest X-rays and urinals would be just as challenging in the real world. In 2008, LIVESTRONG helped me with that challenge.”Mike Thompson, Leukemia and Bone Cancer Survivor
A NOTE OF THANKSI am incredibly honored to write this letter of gratitude to you.
This year over 4,600 Americans will be diagnosed with cancer every single day. More than 20 years ago, I was one of them, diagnosed with cancer at the age of 10. After two bone marrow transplants, a 12-hour facial reconstruction surgery and more than 75 operations spanning five years and four cancers, I am so fortunate and grateful to be healthy today. That is one of the reasons I work at LIVESTRONG, so that I can make a difference.
After years in a depressed state, it was not until the summer of 2008 that my journey back to life truly began. A friend asked if I would join them for the LIVESTRONG Challenge in honor of a young girl who had passed away from cancer. As we approached the finish line, a sign read
“Cancer survivors to the right.” I followed this path and found a yellow rose waiting for me on the other side, a remarkable analogy for what I had just endured.
The LIVESTRONG Challenge was just the beginning. I took advantage of LIVESTRONG’s free tools and resources for cancer survivors and became inspired to start competing in triathlons, eventually making it all the way to the Ironman World Championship in Hawaii in 2012 and the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro with other survivors through Team LIVESTRONG.
Please know that every dollar you invest in LIVESTRONG goes to change the course of lives for so many people. In 2016, we helped connect more survivors than ever to the cancer support they need. We provided more cancer programs and services to communities and forged ahead in reinventing health care systems that will revolutionize the way cancer patients are cared for. We could not make this incredible impact for so many without you by our side.
I am thankful for your belief and support in our work so we can continue helping cancer survivors like myself. I have seen and experienced firsthand how LIVESTRONG changes lives, and you make that possible. Thank you.
With gratitude,
Mike Thompson, 4x cancer survivor

NAVIGATION SERVICESSupporting Survivors Now
“We found out that LIVESTRONG would help us financially with fertility treatments. They would pay for egg retrieval and the medications. LIVESTRONG made it possible for Jason and I to have a family. We’re complete now.”Wendy Stively Cervical cancer survivor
In 2016, we served 9,653 cancer patients, survivors and loved ones across the United States. Over 115,500 have been served since 2004.
We helped cancer patients and survivors save over $11.7 million in fertility preservation & medication costs and other cancer-related concerns.
Over 2 million people have accessed our online cancer services since 2004. In 2016, over 372,000 people accessed our resources at LIVESTRONG.org.
Serving cancer survivors and their families through LIVESTRONG Navigation has always been at the core of what we do. Since 2004, we have helped over 115,500 people navigate the uncharted waters of a cancer diagnosis by offering support in treatment options, emotional counseling, insurance and finances, fertility preservation and clinical trials.
We know that hearing the words “you have cancer” can be disorienting and terrifying, and we are the recourse and inspiration for individuals on their cancer journeys. Whether it is assisting a young couple in preserving their fertility so that one day they can welcome a child into the world, explaining to a beloved grandmother what her treatment or clinical trial options are, or providing a LIVESTRONG Guidebook and Journal to a young adult cancer survivor, we make sure no one has to face this disease alone.

LIVESTRONG AT THE YMCAFinding Your Strength Now
Available in more than 585 YMCA branches around the United States.
More than 45,950 individuals have participated since the program started.
There are over 3,441 program-certified instructors.
What started as a simple partnership between LIVESTRONG and the YMCA of the USA in 2007 has grown into a life-changing program that has touched close to 46,000 cancer survivors in 40 states. LIVESTRONG at the YMCA is a 12-week exercise program, offered at little to no cost, that is designed to help cancer survivors get back on their feet after treatment.
The program, created with input from cancer survivors and implemented with the help of certified fitness instructors, has been found to improve participants’ overall quality of life by increasing muscle mass, strength, endurance, flexibility, energy levels and self-esteem.
We are proud of everything we’ve accomplished with our friends at the YMCA of the USA, and we look forward to unveiling more LIVESTRONG at the YMCA locations and supporting even more cancer survivors on their paths to wellness.
“Those 12 weeks made me stronger physically and emotionally. I was able to dance at my son’s wedding. LIVESTRONG saved my life as much or as more than my surgery and treatment.”Deniese Valvano, cancer survivor

LIVESTRONG CANCER INSTITUTESFocused on Patient-Centered Care Now
Dell Med is the first new medical school built at a Tier 1 research university in nearly fifty years.
The Institutes will be the vanguard of creating new models of patient-centered cancer care.
Our cancer care model will serve as an incubator that can be scaled for use throughout the state and country.
The LIVESTRONG Cancer Institutes has a simple yet powerful mission: to rethink the full range of cancer care, from prevention to diagnosis, treatment and survivorship—all with a focus on the patient’s needs, values and preferences. This mission includes patient input in the design and delivery of cancer treatment, education and research.
It has been an exciting year with the recruitment of Dr. Gail Eckhardt as the inaugural director of the LIVESTRONG Cancer Institutes. Dr. Eckhardt has launched a strategic planning process with members of the cancer community with the aim of developing a novel clinical care framework and cancer research enterprise on The University of Texas at Austin campus.
The Institutes have an unparalleled opportunity—with a blank slate as part of the new Dell Medical School at The University of Texas at Austin—to design a unique clinical cancer care framework that addresses the most pressing challenges facing survivors and their families. It will be an environment of continual learning and improvement and best practices will be disseminated and replicated nationally.
“LIVESTRONG has devoted 20 years to serving people affected by cancer and gathering data about their experiences and outcomes. Our aim is to revolutionize cancer care, not only reaching more patients, but fostering a new culture of person-center care. The Institutes, under the leadership of Dr. Eckhardt, are positioned to create a model not only for Austin, but for all communities.”

Closed on December 31, 2002, the Founder’s Circle brought together entrepreneurial stewards who understood our passion and made a difference through donations of $500,000 or more. We honor these individuals in perpetuity for their generosity and continued support.
The President’s Circle is a unique giving society that capitalizes on the Foundation’s mission-focused opportunities. Members of the President’s Circle give unrestricted “venture funds” which will be targeted at opportunities where other funding is not always readily available. Unrestricted gifts, which may be used at the discretion of the president, are especially effective in helping to promote our mission and position LIVESTRONG as a leader in the fight against cancer.
The 7 Society recognizes individuals and organizations who have made an extraordinary financial commitment to the LIVESTRONG Foundation. Each member of this group has a cumulative giving commitment totaling $1 million or more to the global fight against cancer.
