INTRODUCTIONletter From the direCtor

have imagination, will travel. Art can take you so many places, as this summer’s collection of classes for youth and adults demonstrates!

Classes in Drawing, Painting, Photography, Computers, Metals, Fiber, Fashion, Interiors, Music, Healing Arts, Printmaking, Writing, and other media, for adults begin in May and run evenings and weekends throughout the summer. Some of the exciting places you can go with art include: drawing the Seven Wonders, map as art, Cézanne’s aix-en-provence, Quebec art Quilt, Simple Country French interiors, delta Blues guitar, and architecture of Frank lloyd Wright.

Our very popular youth program begins June 13 and runs through August 12, with lots of options to fit your child’s summer schedule. Some new classes include: make it play it Band, go Wild! drawing the Zoo, art down under, monet’s Secret garden, drawing galactic Warriors, Sculpture of the Southwest, t-Shirt designs off the runway, ‘take it With you’ Crafts, and thrashing the Concrete Jungle.

For youth ages 16-18 who are interested in pursuing a career in art or design, we are offering portfolio Camp 2011: expose, immerse, inspire. Kris Jones and Nancy Hart will be the lead instructors for this year’s camp which promises to load students with inspiration, motivation, knowledge and resources for completing a successful portfolio to use for scholarship competitions and college entrance interviews.

This summer, we also officially launch our art education professional development series for the master teacher. The following workshops are offered in July and August for one graduate credit: advanced life drawing techniques, material madness with oils or acrylics, using the Computer as an artistic tool, introduction to adobe Creative Suite, and Storytelling and Book design. Students must be a certified educator to take these courses.

There is so much more. You really need to browse the rest of the brochure to see all of the exciting courses we are offering. Bon voyage!

Sincerely,

Brenda SipeDirector of Continuing StudiesKendall College of Art and Design of Ferris State University17 Fountain Street Grand Rapids, MI 49503

Session II: 11 SK W443-BJuly 11,13,18, 20Supply fee: $35

Explore methods of creating imagery using selected printmaking techniques in Kendall’s state-of-the-art print studio. Printmaking as an art form is experiencing a renaissance in contemporary fine art, graphic design and fashion design. Printmaking is, simply, the process to create “multiple originals” from a source surface. There are many different types of processes such as woodcuts, silk-screens, etchings, monotypes, lithographs, and new digital image transfers. Contemporary print-makers are concerned with using “greener” and more earth responsible inks and solvent materials. You will learn about these materials and processes and complete some prints of your own. Instructor: Nathan Kukla

Become inspired to create 3-dimensional works and explore new concepts and materials. Classical notions of what sculpture has been throughout history include bronze figures, marble busts, and monoliths constructed of iron or stone. But sculpture is an art object with mass and volume, “in the round”, which usually interacts with location, time, and the human senses. View exciting sculptural attractions in Grand Rapids by regional and international masters. Be a part of a SiteLab project in our city that is reinventing the identity of contemporary sculpture through site specific installations.
