Istanbul’s Yavuz Sultan Selim bridge links Europe, Asia for the third time

The Yavuz Sultan Selim Bridge, Istanbul’s third bridge linking the

European and Asian sides of Istanbul, opened on August 26th in a ceremony that was attended by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and Prime Minister Binali Yıldırım.

The bridge, built above the northern part of the Bosporus Strait, was named after 16th century Ottoman Sultan Selim I, whose rule marked the expansion of the empire’s burgeoning world power in the Middle East.

We are connecting continents,” Erdoğan said in his speech. “We are celebrating together and we are very proud of it. The nation deserves this. This is a great and joyful day.”

Erdoğan, who along with Yıldırım was among the first to cross the bridge, said it would “pioneer” further projects, such as a canal linking the Black Sea and the Sea of Marmara and another Europe-Asia bridge at the Dardanelles.

Facts About the Project

The bridge of firsts, the 3rd Bosphorus Bridge is the widest suspension bridge in the world with a width of 59 meters and the longest spanning one that has a rail system on it, with a main span of 1408 meters. Another first of the bridge is that it is the suspension bridge with the highest tower of the world, with a height of more than 322 meters.

With its construction commencing in 2013 and completed in 2016, the 3rd Bosphorus Bridge is located in the Odayeri – Paşaköy section of the Northern Marmara Motorway project. The rail system on the bridge is going to transport passengers from Edirne to Izmit. The rail system is going to be integrated with the Marmaray and the Istanbul Subway to link Atatürk Airport, Sabiha Gökçen Airport, and the 3rd Airport which

will be constructed.

The Northern Marmara Motorway and the 3rd Bosphorus Bridge is going to be executed with “Build- Operate – Transfer” model. With an investment value of 4.5 billion TL, the project’s operation, including construction, is going to be executed by IC İçtas – Astaldi Consortium for a period of 10 years 2 months and 20 days and then be transferred to the Ministry of Transportation at the end of this period.

The Northern Marmara Motorway and the 3rd Bosphorus Bridge Project will be one of the symbols of modern Turkey and will bring Turkey closer to its objective of being one of the biggest 10 economies of the world in 2023.As Intekno , we are extremely proud to have
