The Good News December 2016 2

This time of year, Thanksgiving to Christmas, many people reflect on all the blessings they have received. And we are blessed. In fact, most Americans have more than 75 percent of the rest of the world. When I saw that statistic last week it made me think. Why have we been given so much? What are we doing with what God has given us? Are we being a blessing to others? During the first two weeks of December we will begin a sermon series entitled, “Blessed to Be a Blessing.” The first week we will focus on being blessed for eternity. The greatest gift God has given us is eternal life through His Son Jesus Christ. In Mark 8:36-37 we read, “What good is it for a man to gain the whole world yet forfeit his soul? Or what can a man give in exchange for his soul?” As a parent I think of this more and more each day. While it is important the kind of jobs my kids have or the person they marry or where they live, nothing compares to their relationship with Jesus. For it is through Jesus Christ, and Him alone, that they or anyone else is saved. The second week we will focus on the fact that when we

give of ourselves and our resources to others and the Lord, we too are blessed. God continues to show us that there is great joy in giving. My prayer is that each of us will prayerfully ask the Lord, “How do you want me to give with what you’ve given me? How can I be a blessing to others through

my giving?” I am confident that as we go to our Lord in prayer, by His Spirit He will move us to give generously and with thanksgiving because He has given so much to us through His Son Jesus and by His Spirit. I am confident that God will continue to give us the resources help connect people to Christ, cultivate more disciples and be the caring community for each other and the people in the Yuma community. Mark down December 11th on your calendar as our commitment Sunday. There will be time in all three worship services to make commitments to our Lord for our general giving in 2017 and for those who would like to begin making a commitment to More Than You Can Imagine Campaign (to pay off the debt of the Activity Center) as the Lord leads you. I truly believe that the Lord has given us what we have to be a blessing to others. I know this is true because you truly are a blessing to Christ Lutheran Church and Yuma Lutheran School and to our entire staff. We are so blessed for you to be part of our ministry and know that God will

continue to use all of us for His glory and for sharing His love in Christ in the Yuma community. Thank you for your partnership in the Gospel and have a very Merry Christmas.

Serve Each one should use whatever gift he has received to serve others, faithfully administering God's grace in its

various forms. ~ 1 Peter 4:10

Sharing God’s love through service is the focus for the students this school year, and they have already participated in school-, city-, and world-wide servant events!

Above Mrs. Kist’s PreK class shared a

“Stone Soup” lunch with their chapel buddies, Mrs. Dinsmore’s 4th

grade class.

Right Mrs. Gross’

Middle School classes tied fleece blankets that

will be donated to K.I.D.S. CuddleKit Closet for Make a

Difference Day.

Above and left Mr. Harman’s 8th

Grade class once again coordinated this year’s Operation

Christmas Child shoebox collection. 354 boxes were

collected this year! Church members brought in 53 of those boxes! That’s a lot to be excited

about!

The Good News December 2016 4

Advent is here and Christmas is coming! As the song goes—“The Most Wonderful Time of the Year”! But is it? I remember a time in my life—waaaay back when—that I was so caught up in doing it all—shopping, decorating, baking, greeting cards, parties, sewing Christmas dresses for my girls—you know the routine! Add your own “to-dos”. By the time Christmas arrived, I was so worn out (and grouchy?) that I could hardly function. That’s when I actually heard myself say, “I HATE Christmas!”

WHAT?!? Did I hear that correctly? Hate Christmas! How could that be? SOMETHING was dreadfully wrong. I decided then and there that something had to go. Maybe a LOT of somethings! Where were my priorities? What was really important? And, Dear Lord, where was JESUS in all this flurry? Do you ever feel like that?

The Christmas season is much calmer for me now, but I still find myself fighting that old battle. Satan wants to rob us of the TRUE JOY of Christmas—rejoicing in the GREATEST GIFT of all time. The GIFT, without which, our lives are hopeless. Christmas is the season when we are to PAUSE to CELEBRATE THE AMAZING GIFT OF OUR SAVIOR, Jesus Christ and that He came down from the glories of heaven to become one of us, to live a sinless life in a culture that was every bit as corrupt and sinful as ours (just no internet and TV to expose it all) and to suffer and die to bear the sins of all

of us and to make us GOD’S OWN CHILDREN and HEIRS OF HEAVEN! WOW! Now THAT’S SOMETHING TO CELEBRATE!

Christ Lutheran Church will be providing

bright red “Keep Christ in Christmas”

bracelets for each of us to wear throughout the season to keep reminding us of what Christmas is really about! Let’s let it remind us, first of all,

to start our days in PRAYER—asking God to

FILL US with His Spirit and the true meaning of Christmas.

As we go about our day, let it remind us that WE ARE THE ONLY MESSAGE OF TRUTH that some people may encounter. Let God’s Spirit keep you POSITIVE and CHEERFUL (yes—even around those folks who can be irritating) and allow God’s LOVE to SHINE THROUGH YOU! When someone is rude or grumpy or obviously having a bad

day—BLESS THEM with the GIFT of your smile! (Amazing how contagious a smile can

be!) It may just be the gesture that turns their attitude

around. (Hey! Make them wonder what it is that makes you so cheerful! And then

be ready to TELL them!)

Merry Christmas? How about “Have a

Blessed Christmas”? Give them something to

think about. And then PRAY that the Christ

in you will touch the hearts of others. If you feel yourself letting the ol’ Grumpies

creep in (and it will—we’re still human!), put on some Christmas music. Jingle Bells and Deck

the Halls is OK but I’m talking about the music

that shouts out the JOY OF CHRISTMAS!

The kind Satan can’t stand to hear (kick him out!) The kind that can lift your spirit and help bring you back to center. Maybe even sing along! Make a Joyful Noise! Music is a gift of God, so make use of it!

Remember—SATAN HATES CHRISTMAS and he wants to kill our joy!

More importantly, remember—HE THAT IS

IN YOU (Jesus) IS GREATER THAN HE

(Satan)THAT IS IN THE WORLD! (I Jn: 4:4)

And also ..Be of good cheer I (Jesus) HAVE

OVERCOME THE WORLD! (Jn 16:33b)We

need to let God’s Spirit permeate our being so that His Joy bubbles up and flows out of us to

all around us! KEEP CHRIST IN

CHRISTMAS that we may continue to

CONNECT PEOPLE TO CHRIST!

How can WE Keep Christ in Christmas?

The Good News December 2016 5

“For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God.” !

~ Ephesians 2:8

“Do not neglect the gift that is in you, which was given to you by the prophecy with the laying on of

the hands of the eldership.” ~ 1 Timothy 4:14

A 17-minute rain delay. A gift. The Chicago Cubs, win the World Series! It was game seven…the score was tied up in the 9th inning by the Cleveland Indians. Then the rain came…and the tarp was unfurled at 11:54 p.m. Rain delays are part of baseball, as inevitable and boring as pickoff throws and pitching coaches’ visits. But this rain delay will probably be remembered as the most important, most transformative rain delay in baseball history. It was a 17-minute rain delay between the bottom of the ninth and the top of the 10th in the 7th game of the World Series. The Indians chose to stay in the dugout…while the Cubs retreated to the clubhouse, unsure when play would resume. It was there that a meeting grew in those few minutes from four players to the entire team…with Jason Heyward stepping forward. He is quoted as saying, “The rain stopped the game for us, and we just need a brief moment to kind of collect ourselves and be reminded of who we are.” It had been a great season…where as a group they had always stayed positive. They needed to regroup…and this inspirational speech, that even brought some to tears…did just that. It was time to approach the 10th inning of this World Series in the same manner…slow it down…remain positive…and get the W. It was said that this 17-minutes of rain were actually showers of destiny. It changed the pace of the game…and ultimately killed ‘the curse’! A 108 year miracle! A 17-minute rain delay. A gift. In the game of life do you feel like your life is going too fast…like you are going to lose the game? Or at least not win? It doesn’t matter if it is filled with positive times or challenging stressful times. You might feel like you need intervention…a rain delay. A deep breath to refocus yourself…to get your life back on the track that God wants you on. Divine intervention. This is actually what the Cubs general manager said he felt the rain delay was…divine intervention! It makes one think about the possible correlation between the miraculous win by the Cubs…and life in general. We need that inspirational speech…that may bring us to tears…by God Himself. To help us regroup and

head into the next inning in life with God’s Word as our guide and hope for tomorrow. We live by the following verse in Ephesians 2:8, “For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God.” This tells us that salvation is a gift of God, presented free and not in exchange for anything when we place our faith in Christ. It actually magnifies God alone, since He blesses us not because of our merit (our batting average in life)…but because of His goodness. As we refocus we can trust in God and pay attention to His plans for our life. If we are having difficulties in life…whether it is with our work/lack of work, our failing health, broken relationships…maybe it is time for a 17-minute rain delay. His gift. “Do not neglect the gift that is in you, which was given to you by prophecy with the laying on of the hands of the eldership,” 1 Timothy 4:14. No matter what is troubling you in life wrap yourself in the gift of God’s love as He will always CARE for you and never forsake you. Trust in His timing…allowing Him to make the changes in your life (that game winning hit) that will lift your burdens. 17-minute rain delay. A gift. The GREATEST gift ever given to mankind…the birth of Jesus on Christmas Day! During this busiest time of the year…with the shopping, wrapping, baking, traveling, etc…take a rain delay to remember the real reason for the season. Christ is born. Take the time to CARE for and be good to others. Follow the words of Ecclesiastes 3:12-13, “I know that nothing is better for them than to rejoice, and to do good in their lives, and also that every man should eat and drink and enjoy the good of all his labor---it is the gift of God.” God “gives us richly all things to enjoy,” and encourages us to trust in only Him. He urges us to “be rich in good works, ready to give.” CARE. Allow divine inspiration to be the cause of your rain delay as you take a step back from the hustle and bustle of the Christmas season. And share your faith and joy with someone who does not celebrate Christmas. Invite them to church on Christmas Eve…share the anticipation of The Gift that forgives our sins and delivers eternal life to all who believe. “For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Romans 6:23. Amen! To God Be the Glory….Merry Christmas!

Church Service CD Ministry-This ministry is a

GIFT to all those who receive CDs weekly. Also, to those who enjoy them when they are not able to attend a church because of illness. If you would like to receive this GIFT…just call the church office and Dottie will deliver or mail CD’s to you.

Funeral Luncheon-Leonard Larson passed away on November 7th…our sympathy to his family. A memorial service will be held in California on November 27th. (Leonard and his wife Laurina were visited by Dottie for many years as she delivered CDs to them A special friendship grew between them through her great witness of God’s love to them.)

Greeting Card Ministry-Praise the Lord Lillian

is back sending cards! So thankful you are feeling stronger with God’s help! Each time she sends a card from our church family the person receiving it receives a GIFT of love and CARE-ing from our church. Also, remember, to take the time to send cards to those in the church who are dealing with difficult times during this Christmas season…it will be a special GIFT to them.

Health Services Ministry-Take the time on December 11th to receive the GIFT of health by having your blood pressure checked. It could be the GIFT of life for you! We are fortunate to have health professionals that give of their time to help us maintain better health. Just look for the signs between services…it will only take a few minutes!

Meals Ministry-Thank you to those who have

been taking the “gift” of meals to Brad and Mary as they recover from their hospitalizations. They are greatly appreciated! The many “chefs” that have made meals this past year are a great blessing at CLC; thank you for using your special “gift” to nourish our members in need!

CARE Basket Ministry-Kay and Don are back and they have been very busy stopping by different homes to deliver GIFTs of CARE-ing from CLC to those who could use some TLC! Their visits are special GIFTs as they witness to others God’s amazing love! Kay has a wonderful GIFT in making these baskets a work of art! Thanks!

Military Ministry-A successful Veteran’s Day

We each receive the GIFT of freedom every day because of the commitment made by these brave men and women! Thank you to Mona, Dave, and committee for their planning. Also, to MC Curt; chef Al and his team; Rob, Dan, and Dakota for their wonderful music; to Duane for his program of music; to Matt for his set up skills, and the Boy Scouts for

their participation… and to all those who helped make the day a success! God bless America!

shawl around someone’s shoulders or on their lap…is a great “gift” from CLC! Many people have received this “gift”…and we have to thank the many ladies from this ministry for their time and God given talent of knitting or crocheting. They are again meeting on the 2nd and 4th Mondays of the month in the conference room at 1:00. Flo and Lotte are back to coordinate this amazing ministry! More ladies with the GIFT to knit or crochet are needed; come and join them, as all the yarn is provided and special friendships will be made!

Prayer Network Ministry-The greatest “gift” that

we can give each other…is the “gift” of prayer for their needs and concerns. If you have a request to be prayed over or a thanks for prayers answered call Kimberly in the church office.

Bring your favorite holiday food to share!

A stocking that has been filled with offerings throughout the year will be presented. All of the

offerings will be donated to World Vision to purchase livestock that will aid people around the world. The offerings were gathered based on the

poem below (starting in January):

Though Christmas is far off It wouldn’t be so shocking To put one coin in the toe Of your LWML stocking.

Since February is the 2nd month, Put in two, you see.

While March, the 3rd month, We’ll call for three. With April over you

Will add four coins more. Next the pleasant month of May

When five more coins you will save. Six in June, seven in July

See how your gift is growing. In August eight more coins Into the stocking are going.

September nine, October ten, Eleven in November.

December calls for coins twelve You surely will remember.

Now your Christmas coins are ready So bring your Christmas stocking

Now don’t forget, We will make for another family

The best one yet.

A Year of Blessings

As we close this calendar year, we reflect on all that was accomplished with God’s help. The following people/organizations received gifts directly from our chapter of the LWML:

1. Nathan Scheck—Nathan is the seminary student that the Women in Mission sponsored for the year. He graduated and now pastor to two congregations in Washington. He and his family kept us updated

on what they were doing and how much our prayers and gifts meant to them.

2. The Yuma Lutheran Orchestra and Yuma Youth Fiddlers

3. The Haitian school in the Dominican Republic

4. 340 cotton boys short and 73 Bundles of Joy were given to Yuma Regional Medical Center, Sunset Clinic, and NewLife Pregnancy Center.

5. Yuma Lutheran School received

300+ coin bags to collect offerings for chapel.

Also, because of the generosity of this congregation, our Mite offerings were among the highest of the zones in the Pacific Southwest. Thank you!! With these offerings many grants were filled and many more people were helped and saving message of Jesus was shared. The Yuma Lutheran Orchestra and Yuma Youth Fiddlers programs received $10,000 from the district grants, as well as Yuma

Community Food Bank and NewLife Pregnancy Center.

More Than You Can Imagine

There is still time to get your matching gift in for More Than You Can Imagine Campaign. Christ Lutheran entered into this campaign two and a half years ago with the goal of raising $2.5 million dollars in order to pay off the debt of the Activity Center (gym). We are blessed to have donors who have matched and will match gifts up to $1.3 million dollars. What this means is that for every dollar you give, it will be matched. Your gift will double, getting us to the goal our congregation has set. While many people have given generously, there is still money ready to be matched this year. We don’t want to miss out on these generous matching gifts, so any offerings to More Than You Can Imagine you can give by the end of this year would be greatly appreciated and again will be doubled. If you are already giving to this Campaign thank you for your generosity. If you have not been part of this campaign or have just joined Christ Lutheran, would you consider giving a gift or a monthly gift to this campaign? This would be a gift in addition to your weekly tithes to the Lord.
