the final authority in ascertaining the purity of food items. The government should have also come with a policy wherein the measures to curb such men-ace could have been made easy which in turn would have increased the credibility of the government. It is strange that department of food, drug controller, agri-culture or horticulture who one way or the other are connected with spurious drugs, spurious pesticides and adulterated food items too are not breaking their silence. As it is a public interest case involving the health of lakhs of people, the honorable courts alone cannot do everything. It needs public awareness and government actions to stop adulteration if any found in the products of these companies. The civil society has also its role to play in creating awareness amongst the consumers about the substandard products pushed in the market and persuade them to use minimum spices as even otherwise some spices are carrying tartazine colour which is very harmful for the human health. It is also strange that the separatists who do not miss =even a single opportunity to issue their statements on petty matters and start taking out processions have so far given their company to the government and no statement has come from their side. In fact the ques-tion of adulterated spices, spurious drugs and spurious pesticides is not the question of one person or a group of persons; it is the question of the whole society as ev-erybody is affected in one way or the other. There is a need to stand together and persuade and pressurize the government to take stern action against all those private producers who indulge in such a crime but not before they are also heard and given the opportunity to prove their innocence. The local media should also leave the petty interests aside and exhibit their respon-sibilities towards the society.

the statement said on Tuesday. Five Indian soldiers were killed in an attack by Pakistani troops along the LoC in August while two more were killed in January. Both sides also repeatedly accused each other of violat-ing the ceasefire on the LoC. The DGMOs last met 14 years ago after the Kargil con-flict of 1999. They usually talk once a week on a hotline. India is believed to have forcefully conveyed to Paki-stan the importance of maintaining the ceasefire on the LoC. Pakistani media reports said Islamabad was expected to seek a larger role for UN military observ-ers deployed along the ceasefire line. The UN Military Observer Group in India and Pakistan (UNMOGIP) was established in 1949 under a resolution passed by the Security Council to monitor the LoC. Pakistan ini-tially proposed to include Foreign Ministry officials in the meeting of the DGMOs but India rejected the move.

Pakistan’s Foreign Office said last week that the pro-posal for including diplomats in such meetings was “still on the table”.

Omar is a Pakistani national, while Reyaz is a Budgam resident.Though the forces intensified the searches in the vil-lage, the militants, sources said, have managed to es-cape. The search operation was in progress when the last reports came in.However, a senior police official said the militants were still in the village which is under a strict cordon. “The militants are still under cordon in a nearby vil-lage. We won’t let them escape,” a senior police official told GNS.

Government to find ways to air lift their bodies,” one of the protestors Muhammad Omar told CNS. The protestors including wailing women alleged that they were forcibly vacated by police when they staged a peaceful protest outside the Gupkar residence of Chief Minister Omar Abdullah. When contacted a top official told CNS that the bodies of all the deceased persons have been kept at PHC Afti and a message has been forwarded to concerned authorities for air-lifting the bodies to their native places. The official however added that weather conditions in the area were not favorable for pressing a helicopter into service and so the process may take some time.

highway was closed on past Saturday following heavy snow-fall at Banihal Tunnel and Pantitop. A traffic police official told CNS that BECON cleared the road at 11 and the stranded vehicles were allowed to move towards Jammu. He said that there were traffic jams due to anti-PDD demonstrations at various places on Highway. “After two days of its closure due to heavy snowfall, the Srinagar-Jammu highway, the only surface link between Kashmir and rest of the world opened for vehicular traf-fic on Tuesday afternoon, leading to clearance hundreds of stranded vehicles,” he said. The traffic official said subject to fair weather conditions, traffic along the highway would move from Srinagar to-wards Jammu side on Wednesday. He further said that more than 4000 vehicles, including both passenger and goods-vehicles, crossed the Jawahar Tunnel and reached to Jammu on Tuesday. The highway was closed on Saturday evening in the wake of heavy snowfall which triggered mudslides and shooting stones at many places along the 300-km road.

absolutely no change in the schedule and the metered and non-metered areas have to wait till March next year.”Commenting over the present power crises in valley, PDD chief said that the supply has increased many a times but the load shedding in several areas across valley is compel-ling the department to go for more power cuts. “We have the supply of 1200 megawatts but at the same time we have more than 1500 megawatts being consumed.”Khan further remarked that the protests in several areas against the power crises was due to over loading in the respective areas and that the department has taken nec-essary action so that the losses could be mitigated. “We have issued additional transformer to Bemina area and the same is being done in Awantipora area. I appeal people that to consume power economically.”NC additional general secretary Dr Mustafa Kamal, when asked to comment on the PDD notice issued to his party headquarter, said: “We respect the law of land. Whatever dues are pending against our party headquarters will be paid in due time. Maybe there were some lapses from both sides but we will plead our case accordingly. We will check why we have not been able to pay dues this year when we have never been defaulter of the PDD in last 35 years.”

cuts especially during late evening and night hours, our children cannot concentrate on their studies,” local resident Shafat Ahmad said.“The students go to tuitions in day time. It is only during eve-ning that they get time to study but due to power cuts they are not able to do so”, he added while demanding from the PDD to ensure regular power supply, particularly during evening and night. Another protester told KNS that every family cannot afford inverters or other related items and it is only regular sup-ply of electricity which can be helpful to us. “Power cuts especially late evening cuts also encourage anti-social and criminal elements. High claims of ensuring regular supply in metered areas are nowhere visible on ground,” he said. Meanwhile, the unavailability of electricity triggered off massive protests in Awantipora area of south Kashmir An-antnag district on Tuesday. Reports reaching Global News Service said that early morning hundreds of residents of Hari Parigam, Bucchoo, Kaigam, Chachkoot converged at Awantipora Chowk, where they staged demonstrations against the PDD. The protesters said they were reeling under complete darkness from last 15 days due to unavailability of electricity. The protesters also blocked Srinagar-Jammu na-tional highway to gain the attraction of the officials. The traffic jam remained for several hours from Kaigam to Pujgund causing disruption in the smooth flow of traffic. Later, the protesters dispersed peacefully after the officials

assured to restore power facility at the earliest.“For last 15 days, we’re without electricity. The unavail-ability of electricity also affects the water supply to the villages. In harsh winters, we have to fetch water from streams. We’re facing a lot of inconvenience,” Ghulam Rasool, a protester said. He urged the Chief Minister to up-grade the receiving situation so that the power woes end and the people heave a sigh of relief.
