the flame burning on the altar
continually; it shall not go out.”
In this spirit we would keep alive

Sukkot is a time for endings and beginnings.
Summer is over. The air gets colder. The days grow
shorter. Leaves start to fall. We have begun a new year.
Sukkot is a time for rejoicing and remembering.
We celebrate the harvest that provides our food. We
recall the journey of the Jewish people in the desert.
We remember the pilgrimage they made to worship at
the Temple in Jerusalem.
Sukkot is a time for living and learning.
We pray for rain to fall so new crops can
grow. We finish reading the Torah and
begin anew, so we may learn and grow.
We remember to share our food and to care
for the earth.

Once, the Jews were slaves in Egypt. With God's help, they escaped. It took them forty years to walk from Egypt to the land of Israel. The Jews spent a long time in the wilderness. They spent many, many nights sleeping out in sukkot.
When we build a sukkah, we feel a little bit like the Jews who escaped from Pharaoh. We remember how terrible it is for any person to be a slave - and how good it is to live in freedom.

Creator of all things, goodness and kindness are

To uphold the falling, to heal the sick, to free the

As You taught our ancestors through the words

Presence, like lightning, illumines the darkness in which we
walk. Help us to see, wherever we gaze, that the bush
burns unconsumed. And we, clay touched by God, will
reach out for holiness, and exclaim in wonder: How filled
with awe is this place, and we did not know it!
Blessed is the Eternal One, the Holy God!

In Your love, O God, You have chosen us from among

commandments. Adonai, You brought us to Your
service, so that we may be witnesses to Your Presence
throughout the world.
And in Your love, O God, You have also given us times
of happiness and seasons of joy. You have given us this
Festival of Sukkot, season of thanksgiving, when we
join together in prayer, memory and gratitude.
We ask that you remember Your people, and renew in us love and compassion, goodness, life and peace. This day remember us for well-being. Amen. This day bless us with Your nearness. Amen. This day help us to a fuller life. Amen. Blessed are You, Adonai, who brings holiness to the Jewish people and to the Festivals.
Everpresent One, may we, Your people Israel, be worthy in our deeds and our prayer. Wherever we live, wherever we seek You – in this land, in the land of Israel, in all lands – You are our God, whom alone we serve in reverence.

“On the first day you shall take the product of goodly trees, branches of palm trees, boughs of leafy trees, and willows of the brook, and you shall rejoice before Adonai your God seven days.”
The Palm is like a spine; it tells us:“Stand straight; be brave; do not fear to be yourself!
The Myrtle is shaped like an eye. It tells us:Pay attention to the beauty of the world, and do not close your eyes to the needs of others.
The Willow is shaped like our lips. It tells us:Speak kindly of others, and raise your voice to defend those in need.
=
The Etrog is shaped like a human heart; it says:
“Open your heart, feel the pain of others, and know
their gladness; love them as you love yourself.
As we lift the four species as a unit, we think about the unity of God, the unity of the Jewish people, and the unity of all humanity.May our hands which fulfill this mitzvah be used to build and plant, to comfort and heal, and to reach out to all who are in need.

We believe in tomorrow. We believe that we have the power to make tomorrow different from today. We believe that poverty need not be permanent and that people need not learn war forever. We believe in humanity despite all that we know. We believe that there can yet be a time of peace and a time of justice, a time of friendship and a time of tranquility for all who live on earth. We believe that we can have a share in bringing that day closer by the way we live today. The world may smile at our dreams, but no matter – we still believe.
