Welcome

Independence Day Litany

God of freedom:

Protect this great nation from forces within and without, that threaten our freedom, And from those that hinder our love of our neighbors.

Help us understand and deal mercifully with people at our borders who seek asylum and a better life. As most of us are descendants of immigrants to this great land.

Help those of us who do not usually think about racial justice be aware of our privilege and use it for the good of all. Comfort and aid those of us who deal with racial discrimination on a daily basis.

Help us have conversations across divides, and grow in understanding how these issues harm us as a nation. Help us to accept one another in the colorful diversity that is your dream for humanity.

Help us to learn about and protect this great land you have given us to steward. Help us remove the boundaries that separate us from one another.

Help us explore the commonality that exists between us.

Help us move beyond fear and distrust into new understandings of what it means to live together as one nation, under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all. Amen.

Song of Praise (Please honk just twice, and only at the end of each verse)

If you’re happy and you know it, honk your horn. If you’re happy and you know it, honk your horn. If you’re happy and you know it, and you really want to show it, If you’re happy and you know it, honk your horn. (Beep, Beep) If you’re blessed and you know it, honk your horn. If you’re blessed and you know it, honk your horn. If you’re blessed and you know it, and you really want to show it, If you’re blessed and you know it, honk your horn. (Beep, Beep) If you know that Jesus loves you, honk your horn. If you know that Jesus loves you, honk your horn. If you know that Jesus loves you, and you really want to show it, If you know that Jesus loves you, honk your horn. (Beep, Beep)

Prayer of the Day

You are great, O God, and greatly to be praised. You have made us for yourself, and our hearts are restless until they rest in you. Grant that we may believe in you, call upon you, know you, and serve you, through your Son, Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen.

Word First Reading: Romans 7:15-25

15 I do not understand my own actions. For I do not do what I want, but I do the very thing I hate. 16 Now if I do what I do not want, I agree that the law is good. 17 But in fact it is no longer I that do it, but sin that dwells within me. 18 For I know that nothing good dwells within me, that is, in my flesh. I can will what is right, but I cannot do it. 19 For I do not do the good I want, but the evil I do not want is what I do. 20 Now if I do what I do not want, it is no longer I that do it, but sin that dwells within me. 21 So I find it to be a law that when I want to do what is good, evil lies close at hand. 22 For I delight in the law of God in my inmost self, 23 but I see in my members another law at war with the law of my mind, making me captive to the law of sin that dwells in my members. 24 Wretched man that I am! Who will rescue me from this body of death? 25 Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord! The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

Responsive Reading Psalm 145:8-14

8 The LORD is gracious and merciful, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love. 9 The LORD is good to all, and his compassion is over all that he has made. 10 All your works shall give thanks to you, O LORD, and all your faithful shall bless you. 11 They shall speak of the glory of your kingdom, and tell of your power, 12 to make known to all people your mighty deeds, and the glorious splendor of your kingdom. 13 Your kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and your dominion endures throughout all generations. The LORD is faithful in all his words, and gracious in all his deeds. 14 The LORD upholds all who are falling, and raises up all who are bowed down.

Gospel: Matthew 11:16-19, 25-30

16 "But to what will I compare this generation? It is like children sitting in the marketplaces and calling to one another, 17 'We played the flute for you, and you did not dance; we wailed, and you did not mourn.' 18 For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, 'He has a demon'; 19 the Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, 'Look, a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!' Yet wis-dom is vindicated by her deeds." 25 At that time Jesus said, "I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and the intelligent and have revealed them to infants; 26 yes, Father, for such was your gracious will. 27 All things have been handed over to me by my Father; and no one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and anyone to whom the Son chooses to reveal him. 28 "Come to me, all you that are weary and are carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me; for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light." The Gospel of Our Lord. Thanks be to God.

The Apostles’ Creed

We believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.

We believe in Jesus Christ, God's only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

Prayers of Intercession

After each portion of the prayers, the response is… Lord in your mercy, Hear our prayer.

Prayer requests may be submitted during the livestream by making a ‘comment’ in Facebook or by sending an email before Sunday to [email protected].

You may also call the church office during the week at 262-968-3322 or submit a prayer request on our website here.

Sharing the Peace of Christ

Jesus taught that we are to be reconciled to one another before offering our gifts and receiving Communion. So we ‘pass the peace’ as a gesture of reconciliation and goodwill. Please do this with a wave, peace sign or another physically distant greeting.

The Peace of the Lord be with you always, And also with you.

Meal Offering

The offering is an act of worship. We offer a portion of what God has blessed us with for the purpose of doing God’s work in the world through the church. If you are a first time worshiper today, please think of the worship service as our gift to you, and don’t feel obligated to participate in the offering.

Offering Prayer

God of goodness and growth, all creation is yours, and your faithfulness is as firm as the heavens. Water and word, wine and bread: these are signs of your abundant grace. Nourish us through these gifts, that we might proclaim your steadfast love in our communities and in the world, through Jesus Christ, our strength and our song. Amen.

The Great Thanksgiving

The Lord be with you.

And also with you.

Lift up your hearts.

We lift them to the Lord.

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

It is right to give our thanks and praise.

Words of Institution The Lord’s Prayer

Our Father, who art in heaven,

Hallowed be thy Name,

Thy kingdom come,

Thy will be done,

on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread;

and forgive us our trespasses,

as we forgive those

who trespass against us;

and lead us not into temptation,

but deliver us from evil.

For thine is the kingdom,

and the power, and the glory,

for ever and ever. Amen.

Invitation to Holy Communion

Today we are distributing individual communion wafer and juice sets. (Peal off the clear wafer seal first, then SLOWLY peal the purple seal. Be careful to avoid spills. Replace the seal over the cup when done to avoid drips.) And for those who are live-streaming, we are asking that you find some sort of bread and wine/juice at home to use and share during Communion. Feel free say to one another, “The body and blood of Christ given and shed for you.” May the body and blood of our Lord, Jesus Christ, strengthen you and keep you in his grace. Amen.

Prayer after Communion

God of the welcome table, in this meal we have feasted on your goodness and have been united by your presence among us. Empower us to go forth sustained by these gifts so that we may share your neighborly love with all, through Jesus Christ, the giver of abundant life. Amen.

Dear Lord,

We bring to you the burdens we carry, and our prayers for healing and comfort. We remember

people suffering around the world, amid the turmoil of political strife, and those often wounded or

killed for the sake of their Christian belief. We pray for the leaders around the world that, regard-

less of their religious belief, the Holy Spirit works in their hearts and minds to instill a sense of free-

dom and justice for all, especially those who are unable to advocate for themselves. Keep those

who are suffering in mind and body close to you. Heal the sick, injured and those suffering with

other medical conditions. Wrap them, their caregivers and their families in your tender embrace,

so that they feel the grace, love, and comfort which only you can provide. For all, we pray that

your will be done.

We especially pray for:

Gina - who is in ICU battling cancer in Florida - Connie Stearns

Katherine & Brian - driving to Maine to their new home - Brian and Sue Faust

Ben Voelkel and his kidney donor - for a quick recovery - Jeff and Jean Voelkel

Please pray for Pastor Mary Martha and her mother; her mother is very ill - Kathy Theis

For our friend in DeKalb, Dawn, who is recovering from rotator cuff surgery. Jean & Roy

Continued prayers for: Chuck, Jacob, Randy, Gus, Mary Kleiman, Karen Parmen, Eileen, Ann

Marie, Elaina, Jan, Mike, Mark, Doris, Sandy, Bethanne, Jesse, Lorraine, Aunt Karen, Dawn,

all healthcare workers, people battling COVID-19

Lord, we thank you for all the wonderful gifts which you bestow on us. Let us be a blessing to

others, using what you have so freely given us… our time, our talents, our empathy… Thank you

for today, and I pray your Holy Spirit continue to guide me on my journey, and that your light con-

tinues to shine through us.

Today, we especially remember and thank you for:

Ben Voelkel's successful kidney transplant and his release from the hospital to be at home with

his parents visiting him.

Robert and Lili - birthdays - Faust

Birthdays of Sally and Kim

Anniversaries of Brian and Sue Faust/40, Tim and Lori Wirsching/25, Greg and Nancy

Cholka/13

All of this we bring to you in prayer, confident that you will hear us. This we ask, in Jesus’

name. Amen
