2. A washing machine (laundry machine, clothes
washer, or washer) is a machine designed to wash
laundry, such as clothing, towels and sheets. The
term is mostly applied only to machines that use
water as the primary cleaning solution, as opposed
to dry cleaning (which uses alternative cleaning
fluids, and is performed by specialist businesses) or
even ultrasonic cleaners.
In most top-loading washers, if the motor spins in
one direction, the gearbox drives the agitator; if the
motor spins the other way, the gearbox locks the
agitator and spins the basket and agitator together.
Similarly if the pump motor rotates one way it re-
circulates the sudsy water; in the other direction it
pumps water from the machine during the spin
cycle. Because they usually incorporate a gearbox,
clutch, crank, etc., top-loading washers are
mechanically more complex than front loading
machines but are generally lower maintenance
since there is no need for a door seal (described
below). However, the electro-mechanical
components in conventional top-load washer have
largely reached maturity.

My dear Shadhna
You will be glad to know that I visited Udaipur
during the winter holidays with my family
members. Udaipur is really a wonderful place.
Located in the state of Rajasthan it is known as the
city of lakes. You can find here several palatial
buildings of the Rajput era. The Lake Palace covers
the entire Bland in the Pichola Lake. Udaipur is
also known as the Venice of the East. Some of the
famous lakes of this city are Lake Pichola, Fateh
Sagar Lake, Udai Sagar Lake and Swarup Sagar
Lake. People here are very cordial. They like spicy
food. They wear colourful dresses.
The changes of the time can also be seen in this
beautiful city. Most of the palaces have been turned
now into luxury hotels. It is a place worth-visiting.
I’ll suggest you to see this city with your own eyes.
I’m sure you’ll enjoy your visit.
Convey my regards to your parents. Rest is fine.
With good wishes.
Yours affectionately

1. 2 February, 2012, Wednesday
8:35 p.m.
Today I participated in ‘Kindness Towards Animals’
campaign organised on the campus of the school at
10:00 a.m. in the auditoria. The students were told
about the advantages of animals. They were also
instructed to treat animals kindly and
sympathetically. A number of activities viz. debates,
declamation contests, poetry recitation, costume
show and display of slogans on play cards were
organised to inspire the students. I listened to their
views and concluded that people treat animals
inhumanly. Now, I have made up my mind to
counsel those people who kill animals without
rhyme or reason.

Subject : Accidents caused due to stray bulls
Sir
I am a resident of Vikas Enclave. I intend to
bring to your notice that the residents of
this locality are perturbed because of the
stray bulls. They have become the cause of
several road accidents. Moreover, they hit
the children with their horns. There are
nearly ten casualties due to the stray bulls.
7TEACHERS’ HANDBOOK
The traffic is also disturbed by the bulls. I
recollect the accident that took place two
days ago. A cyclist was hit by a stray bull.
Consequently, he collided with a car and got
injured. I humbly request you to protect the
residents of the locality from the stray bulls
as early as possible.

4. Use the following hints to develop the
answer:
• Cricket — the most popular sports of the day.
• First introduced by the British rulers in their
colonies.
• The main intentions — to keep the slaves
unaware of the governance.
• Later even after freedom the then colonies
continued to play but England itself virtually
cut off from it.
• Today a lot of test types of cricket is available
such as One Day, Test Match, T-20 and IPL.
• A lot of wastage of money.
• The audience concentrate only upon a few
people in the ground sometimes for four-five
days without much break.
• Is there any productive result of it? No, not at all.
• Had this expenditure or the energy of the
players been utilised creatively it would have
contributed to the nation’s development a lot.
• Rethink over its promotion.

2. The bar graph shows that the company’s maximum
attention is on its infrastructure and staff. It spent
20% of its revenue equally on infrastructure and
salary each. The next target has been the
repayment of loans and the interest spent on them
(loans) is 17.5%. The third priority was the
advertisement where it spent 15% followed by
12.5% on transport. Taxes and R & D account
amounted to 10% and 5% respectively. It is a fact
that the interest on loan repayment has been
higher but the infrastructure and salary heads
could contribute to the growth of country and it
expects higher returns in future.

Sub: Corporal Punishment
Sir
Inflicting corporal punishment on the school goers is
a crime. But some of the teachers do not understand
this bare fact and thrash the pupils mercilessly. It is
also a well known fact that corporal punishment
makes the students arrogant and obstinate. Teachers
must not mar the future of the students. Those who
believe in the dictum that “spare the rod and spoil the
child” have no knowledge of the human psychology.
Children need love and affection. The traditional
approach to education hinders creativity, productivity
and the harmonious growth of the child. Hence, I
request you to publish my letter in your esteemed
newspaper so as to make the teachers aware of these
facts. They must stop this type of punishment. The
parents should also come ahead to protest against the
established convictions with firm determination.
Yours sincerely

4. NEVER GIVE UP
Once a prince was attacked and defeated. The
enemy soldiers could not find the prince in the
battlefield because he retreated and hid himself
in a cave. He got disappointed and disheartened.
He thought that there was no hope of happiness
in his life. Suddenly he glanced at a spider. It
was weaving a web over the opening of the cave.
It was working so precisely and meticulously
that the prince got inspired. The prince decided
to fight a final battle against the enemy. He came
out of the cave and started training the young.
He trained nearly 2000 youngsters and declared
war against the enemy. It is often said that
fortune favours the brave. He got his empire

invited all their close friends. I also invited my
friends. I also made an arrangement of the DJ
system. The youngsters danced to the tunes of
Punjabi songs. My father inspired us to become
good human beings and help the poor. We enjoyed
the delicious dishes prepared by my mother. The
orchestra presented a very good programme of
music and entertained all and sundry. In the end
the guests sang songs and played musical chairs.
The females also enjoyed themselves. The

Subject : Power failure for long hours
Sir
It is to bring to your notice that the
residents of Vikaspuri are suffering because
of the power failure in the evening. The
production of the factory gets affected by the
regular and continuous power cuts. The
work of packing is adversely affected. We
are earning our bread and butter from these
small scale industries. If the electricity
board continues this practice, we will have
to lock the factories permanently. There is
no other alternate for us. No productive
work is being done in the evening. It is not
only the problem of industrialists. The
ordinary residents of the locality are also
disturbed. The students cannot complete
their homework and revise the topic taught
in the class. The problem of power has
become very grave. You are requested to
solve the problem as soon as possible.

Rita

Delhi Book Fair always fascinates me. Today I
visited this book fair. As usual there was a great

youngsters began shouting at the youngsters of an

between the two groups. The volunteers of the

book fair organising committee tried their best to
pacify the aggressive youngsters of both the
groups. But all their efforts proved in vain. The
youngsters continued fighting. Seeing the situation
becoming worse I called the police. It was finally
controlled after they (police) arrived. Some were
taken into custody but later released after warning
not to do such things again.
UNIT ASSIGNMENT 5
1. Inter-house Folk Song Competition
23 May, 2012, Friday

Our school organised an inter-house folk song
competition for secondary classes at 10:00 a.m. 125
students participated in the folk song competition.
Their cultural events displayed the rich variety of
cultural heritage of India. The Haryanvi group
song secured the first position and the girls who
sang the Rajasthani folk song bagged the second
position. The third position was secured by the
Punjabi group. The audience were mesmerised by
the melodious songs of the budding singers. I was
not the participant but I enjoyed the performance
of each team. I am happy that the school inculcate
the cultural values into the pupils.
2. Rajeev : Come on, Saurav, why are you so
desperate. Cheer up! Failures are not
the end of everything.
Saurav : Of course, but it is only for those who
succeed. You know this is my third
failure. Don’t you believe I am fated to
face it?
Rajeev : What nonsense! Efforts can
overpower the fate. One needs to be
brave.
Saurav : No, Rajeev. Effort is not everything.
Fate is all powerful. I don’t want
failure, but I have to face it every
time.
Rajeev : It is your misconception. Once you
begin believing in fate, it overpowers
you and makes you a coward. This
results in your failure. You should
forget your failures and prepare to
work afresh. You’ll win surely.
Saurav : Okay! I’ll try once more with full
enthusiasm. Thank you very much
for showing me the way.

Sub: Exploitation of children
Sir
I want to draw the attention of the millions of
Indian through your esteemed daily towards one
of the grave problems of India, i.e. child labour.
Child labour is a stigma on the Indian society.
Children are employed at various places such as
hotels, restaurants, shops, household, etc. They
can be seen in industries also doing harmful jobs.
It is really pathetic. These children are deprived
of education and childhood pleasures. Not only
this, their unhygienic working conditions make
them victims of chest ailments and lung cancer.
They are paid so poorly that they fail to spend
money on their treatment and ultimately they get
untimely death.
Child labour must be stopped at all cost. Every
child has a right to get education. Hence, he/she
should not be deprived of his/ her right.
Suggestions: Minimum age should be fixed for
child labour. There should be fixed working hours.
They should be provided necessary facilities and
rights. There must be adequate provisions for
medical care.
Thanking you
Yours faithfully
4. Discipline is essential in all walks of life. An
indisciplined man creates problems not only for
himself but also for the society. A teacher cannot
deliver his lecture in the class if the students are
indisciplined. Discipline is a virtue that enables
a human being to attain his/ her cherished goals.
The attainment of individual and organizational
objectives solely depends on the disciplined
employees. If the players of football don’t follow
the rules and regulation of the game, they will
not be able to play. Discipline is indispensable for
achieving considerable success in the world of
competition. It is discipline that accelerates the
rate of progress of a nation. It must be kept in
mind that discipline cannot be enforced by law. It
is training of the mind. It has to come from
within. The members of the society should
always remember that discipline breeds love and
eradicates the feelings of hatred. A disciplined
person faces the music of life with astonishing
ease. The term discipline must not be misinterpreted.
11TEACHERS’ HANDBOOK
Some semi-literate people think that discipline
imposes restriction on personal freedom. It is a
misapprehension and perilous to the very
existence of human life. One must not forget that
the soldiers who sacrifice their lives for the
security of the citizens are disciplined. If they
become indisciplined the nation’s security will be
at stake. Discipline is of utmost importance in
every field of life.

It is very unfortunate that poverty is still
deeply rooted in every corner of our country.
We have not yet bridges the gap between the
wealthy c lass of people and the most
unfortunate lot i.e. the poor. Last week I had
gone to Shimla for two days with my parents.
We were walking leisurely on the Mall Road.
Suddenly I got shocked to see a poor young
man searching for eatables in a big roadside
dustbin. It was really a very pathetic scene for
me. Although I helped the man with pastries
and ice-creams, I remained disturbed for a
long time.

Sub: Unsatisfactory sanitary condition
Sir
This is to inform you that our town has become
a hell due to lack of adequate sanitary conditions.
Some green grocers throw the rubbish material
on the road. As a result of this the road becomes
dirty. Foul smell can be smelt even from far off
areas. Whenever anyone crosses the road
thousands of flies start flying. Due to dirt,
mosquitoes trouble us a lot particularly at night.
It becomes difficult for us to complete our

I, therefore, request you to please do the
needful in the interest of the public. It is
feared that the city will come in the grip of
some epidemics like dengue and malaria if
immediate action is not taken.

Subject : Street Lights
Sir
It is to inform you that the street lights of
the locality have not been working for the
last six months. The unavailability of street
lights has become the cause of frequent
accidents and unsocial activities. The anti-
social elements of the city harass the girls
who return home late. The cases of robbery
and theft have also become common. The
residents of the locality are terrified as they
cannot go to the market after 6:30 p.m.
Their condition is pitiable. So, you are
requested to ask the concerned authorities
to install new tube light in the streets.

7. BAN CRACKERS
Many malpractices have been associated with some
of our religious festivals and social events. Bursting
crackers on Diwali, wedding parties etc. is the
pinnacle of absurdity. It is not only the wastage of
money but also harmful for the people and
environment. Perhaps the desire to display wealth
and a misguided notion of fun urges people to enjoy
the sight of their hard earned money going up in
smoke. The smoke emitted by the firework releases
harmful and poisonous gases. People suffer from
asthma and other respiratory disorders have to bear
additional suffering. The indulgence in this
malpractice encourages the social evil of child labour.
Most of the factories producing firecrackers employ
children as labourers. These unfortunate children are
deprived of education and childhood days. They also
contact diseases by handling poisonous chemicals.
These crackers are perilous for the school-going
children who use them on various occasions. There
are numerous examples of accidents that took place
because of using the crackers. Hence, it is the need
of the hour to ban crackers.

Madam
It is to inform you that the rooms and toilets of the
school are not cleaned properly. One can find many
pieces of paper and wrappers in the classrooms in
the morning. There is a foul smell in the toilets.
The sweepers don’t wash the commodes daily. The
dirty and unhygienic condition of classrooms and
toilets can mar the reputation of our school. I
request you to heed the problem and take prompt
action.

It is but natural that people sleep inside the room.
At about 2:00 a.m. when people are in deep
slumber, I woke for toilet. All of sudden I heard
some sound in neighbourhood. I saw through the
ventilator, a man was breaking the door. I didn’t
stop even for a minute. I went outside the room
and informed the chowkidar. He was doing his job
properly. He took heed of mine and immediately
called his other colleagues too. I along with
chowkidar went into the house of the neighbour
where thieves were busy in committing theft. They
were collecting money and jewellery from almirah
and someone was busy in collecting other valuable
materials too. We caught them red-handed. They
just tried to escape but of no use. We immediately
informed the police. The police came and took

Subject : Hostel life
My dear father
Received your loving letter. I feel bad to
know that you are always worrying about
me. Papa, I am studying hard. I am happily
settled in the school hostel. Of course, for a
few days in the beginning I did feel
homesick. But now I am well adjusted. I
have learnt to be independent, punctual and
active. I have become more disciplined and
I obey all the norms of a hostel life. We have
fixed time for doing all the work. I take part
in the morning physical drill and evening
games. The hostel Superintendent is very
strict but affectionate. We feel homely in
his company. So far, food is concerned, it is
not so tasty. I always remember the
delicacies prepared at home. But don’t
worry, papa. This is not a vital point. One
has to sacrifice a lot for achieving something
great.
Rest is fine. Convey my regards to mummy.
Yours affectionately
Sarosh
4. DEFORESTATION IS IMBALANCING
THE ECOSYSTEM
Today we are living in an injurious environment.
It is killing us more than providing life to us.
Environmental pollution is one of the major hazards
that are threatening the ecological balance. The air
that we inhale is polluted, the water we drink is
contaminated and noise pollution has managed to
take away the calmness and serenity from our
otherwise hectic and tense lives. The incessant
felling of trees, building of dams and the upcoming
unplanned congested localities have disturbed the
ecological balance to an alarmingly high level. To
remedy this situation the urgent need of the hour
is to plant as many trees wherever possible and to
shift the factories and mills to places where their
effect on pollution of the environment is
minimised. Man himself is responsible for all his
problems. He should work sensibly to save
environment. Deforestation must be banned. Grow
more trees should be our motto. By doing this
alone we can save our life from being perished.

2. The graph shows that aeroplane is used by least
people whereas cycle is the most common mode of
vehicle. Only 10,000 people use aeroplane but
55,000 use cycle. The second largest carrier is the
train amounting to 50,000 people whereas bike and
car are used by 40,000 and 30,000 people
respectively. It implies that cycle is the cheapest
mode followed by the train whereas aeroplane is
not at all affordable for everyone.

10:00 p.m.
Today the police arrested a group of 14 people in
Thane under the Gambling Act. They were fighting
with one another and making a hue and cry. They
became so violent that one of them fired in the air
to threaten the others. They had approximately
two lakh rupees and three sets of playing cards.
They intended to violet the Gambling Act. But the
police arrested them red handed. In my opinion
they were forced by the circumstances to take
recourse to gambling. Their parents have
numerous expectations from them. But they fail to
fulfill them. They all are educated and badly in need
of jobs. The government of India cannot provide
them with the basic necessities of life.
Consequently, they become gamblers and get
entrapped.
May God show them the right path!

Sub: Regarding theft
Sir
I beg to report a case of theft in our locality. It was
Tuesday and we had gone out station to enjoy the
birthday party of my cousin. When we returned in
the evening we found that the burglars had broken
the window to enter in the house. We unlocked the
front door and found that all the cupboards had
been broken and the things in the room lay
scattered. It seemed that the burglars had enough
time to search the house. They stole all the
valuables and the cash available in the house.
We have made an inventory of our loss which
comes to about ` 60,000. You are requested to lodge
an FIR and enquire the matter to bring the guilty
people to book.
Yours sincerely
Ashok

forced an entry in my absence. I hurriedly went
to fetch the porter from the basement, who
telephoned to the police. Then with the porter’s
assistance I began to search for intruders who
might be still lurking in my flat. We went
through the rooms, being careful to touch
nothing as we did not want to hinder the police
in their searching for fingerprints. Then a police
inspector arrived with a constable. I told them of
my discovery of the ransacked flat. The inspector
began to look for fingerprints, while the
constable checked how the burglars entered the
flat. Soon the inspector got the trace of
fingerprints.

2. I always appreciate friendly matches. Last Sunday
a cricket match was organised between our school
and XYZ School. I was one of the most enthusiastic
spectators. The match began at 10:00 a.m. with the
toss. Since the captain of our school team lost the
toss the other team’s captain elected to bat.
The batting began. The first two batsmen played
very well, and they made 80 runs. But after them
the team did not play well. However, the seventh
batsman played a little well. He added considerably
to the score. The XYZ team were all out by lunch
hour and the score stood 195 only.
After the lunch break our side went into bat. Each
and every batsman did his best. Surya Mallick,
however, proved himself the most excellent
batsman after scoring a century. Finally, our team
won the match. But we appreciated the game of the
opposite side. Victory or defeat does not matter.
What actually matters is the spirit of
sportsmanship.

Respected grandpa
I celebrated my birthday last Sunday and missed
you a lot. It was the first time that you were not on
my birthday. But your valuable gift was certainly
with me. I so eagerly wanted to have the series of
J.K Rowlings’ Harry Potter. It is really amazing
that you understood my wishes and sent this
valuable series on this special day. You know, I am
so fond of reading novels. I’ll start reading the first
part of this novel right from tomorrow. It is a
lovely gift for me.
Yours affectionately

Terror returned to Delhi on Wednesday i.e. 7
September, 2011. At 10:15 a.m. on this ill-fated day,
as Delhi High Court’s reception counter near Gate
No.5 milled with people, terrorists detonated a
sophisticated improvised explosive device (IED) placed
in a briefcase, leaving 11 dead and 91 injured. It was
the first major terrorist attack in the capital in
almost three years. Most of the casualties were
among litigants, some as distinguished as Captain
Ronald Nagar, who was once Rajiv Gandhi’s co-pilot
in Indian Airlines, and some as nondescript as a band
of hawkers who had come to the court in appeal for
a license to sell their wares. The injured were
immediately rushed to different hospitals — 57 to
Ram Manohar Lohia hospital. There were some
injured in AIIMS, Moolchand hospital, Apollo,
Safdarjang, Ganga Ram and R & R Army hospital.
These types of attacks leave people helpless. They
miserably fail to do anything.

4. Undoubtedly, smoking is harmful to health. But it is
also the harsh reality of life that youngsters smoke
tobacco and they consider it their social status. The
irony of the situation is this that they are well aware
of the fact that smoking deteriorates the quality of
their living but they strictly adhere to this addiction.
They justify their act by one or the other illogical
logic. Smoking hampers the functioning of lungs as
the smoke which smokers inhale contains carbon-
dioxide. Human lungs need oxygen to purify blood.
Lungs get severely affected by the poisonous smoke.
Moreover, tobacco smoke comprises nicotine which
makes the smokers addicted. Nicotine does not kill
humans but the moment it dissolves in the blood, the
body demands it time and again. Smoking causes lack
of appetite, narrowness of arteries, T B, asthma and
lung cancer. It is a killer which must not be allowed
to kill the human body. One should never smoke. It
is also to be noted that the smokers become the cause
of others’ irritation. They smoke at public places and
victimise the fellow beings. This is the pinnacle of
absurdity. The habit which is neither beneficial to the
doer nor to mankind must be avoided.

attractive and colourful kites. The competition was

decorated them with bright colours. I took nearly half
an hour to prepare that kite. My friends praised me
and hoped that I would be given the first prize. The
other participants were also talented and did their

My dear Arjun
I am glad to know the results of your final
examination. You have done very well. Seeing all
the grades in A or A+ is really amazing. In the First
Terminal you had performed so badly. Father had
become so upset. But this time he is extremely
happy. He always says “It is never too late”.
Therefore, I had written to you earlier to work
hard. You listened to me and studied well. As a
result you got excellent grades in all the subjects.
Now you are in class VIII. The course is a little
harder than before. Hence, keep on studying
sincerely. Mother feels proud of you. And I too. I
congratulate you on your wonderful achievement.
Rest is fine. Take care of your health.
With best wishes

4. The US first President George Washington was a
very kind man. He could not see anyone in
distress. Once he was going somewhere in his car.
Suddenly his eyes fell on a small dog who was
caught in mud. The poor animal was trying its best
but could not manage to come out. George
Washington’s soft heart moved greatly to see the
animal’s helplessness. He got down from his car,
jumped into the mud without thinking even for a
while and pulled the poor creature out on the dry
land. His friends who were with him praised him a
lot for bringing relief to the animal. But the great
President said to them, “Seeing the dog in misery,
my heart pained. By helping it I relieved myself of
my pain”.

a book. It was 25% on the paper cost followed by
20% each on binding and printing, whereas on

cost on binding was excessive which should have
