Robert A. Swarm, MD, a graduate ofWashington University School of Medicine,began residency training in general surgerybefore completing anesthesiology training at

Washington University. After fellowship training in pain management at theUniversity of Sydney, he returned to Washington University to become theDirector of Pain Management and to establish the Pain ManagementFellowship Training Program. As Associate Professor of Anesthesiology, hismain clinical interest is the multidisciplinary treatment of acute and chron-ic pain.

Menelaos Karanikolas, MD, DSc, received hismedical education in Greece before coming toWashington University for anesthesiology resi-dency training and fellowships in cardiotho-racic anesthesiology and pain management.

His areas of clinical expertise include cardiothoracic anesthesiology andperioperative and cancer pain treatment. Dr Karanikolas, currentlyAssistant Professor of Anesthesiology, is completing a Masters in PublicHealth and is initiating clinical research projects through the WashingtonUniversity Pain Center.

Donna Kalauokalani, MD, MPH, a graduate ofthe University of Hawaii School of Medicine,completed anesthesiology residency trainingat Washington University. After pain manage-

ment fellowship training at the University of Washington, she gained fur-ther training in health services research as a Robert Wood JohnsonClinical Scholar. She has recently returned to Washington University asAssistant Professor of Anesthesiology, Internal Medicine, and Psychiatry.The focus of her clinical work and clinical research is pain treatment. Shehas a particular interest in the development of rational strategies for thetreatment of acute and chronic pain.
