1 can command a brigade or a division (commander the Corps of Observation), but is always subordinate to Greene.2 can command a brigade or a division (later commander of the Virginia Continental Brigade).3 Composed of about 100 Virginia recruits, Lawson's Virginia Company (formed out of the survivors of Porterfield's Virginia State Troops (wore blue faced red coats and red waistcoats and pants) (50), Wallace's Virginia Continentals (formed out of the survivors of Buford's Virginia Regiment, wore blue faced red coats) (60), and Henry Connelly's North Carolina State troops (mounted) (40). This regiment was later merged with the 4th and 5th Virginia Regiments. About 80 men (1 stand of 4 figures) were detached to the Light Infantry Battalion, probably most of Wallace's company and some of Connelly's company. Buford was so ineffective that he was sent to Salisbury to organize supplies by Greene upon taking command. 4 1st Maryland Regiment until March 10, when it was renamed the Maryland Brigade. 5Until March 10 was the 1st Maryland Battalion commanded by Colonel Gunby; after March 10 it was called the 1st Maryland Regiment. It had 4 line companies commanded by Gaither (1st Maryland), Anthony (3rd Maryland), Benson (5th Maryland) and Anderson (7th Maryland) plus a light company commanded by Brooks. Later on Captain Beatty (Maryland Extra Regiment) took command of Anderson's company. About 120 men (1.5 stands) from Anderson's and Brooks' companies were detached to the Light Battalion, leaving about 240 men with the line companies. Captain Beatty brought with him 75 men (rank and file or @85 total) from the Maryland Extra or Extraordinary Regiment who were divided up between the four line companies. Beatty's men wore Brown faced red coats, but the rest of the battalion/regiment wore blue faced red coats.6Until March 10 was the 2nd Maryland Battalion commanded by LTC Ford; after March10 it was called the 2nd Maryland Regiment. It had 4 line companies commanded by Jacquett (Delaware), Williams (2nd Maryland), Oldham (4th Maryland), and Dobson (6th Maryland) plus a light company commanded by Kirkwood (Delaware). About 120 men (1.5 stands) from Dobson's and Kirkwood's companies were detached to the Light Battalion, leaving about 320 men with the line companies.

7 Composed of about 240 men drawn from 1st Maryland Battalion: Anderson's 4th Company and Brooks Light Company and 2nd Maryland Battalion: Dobson's 4 Company and Kirkwood's Delaware Light Company as well as about 50-60 men from Lawson's Virginia and 20-30 of Connelly's North Carolina Company. Continentals. Later on Kirkwood's and Lawson's companies (90+50 men or 2 stands of 4 figures OR 4 stands of 2 figures) were attached as light infantry to Washington's dragoons (had 110 men at Guilford Courthouse).8 Composed of Tate's Augusta County Virginia riflemen (50), Comb's Fauquier County Virginia riflemen (40), Gilmore's Rockbridge County Virginia riflemen (40), and Buchanan's August County Virginia riflemen (20). Commanded by Major Francis Triplett.9 Composed of Parson's Troop/1st Dragoons (27), Jones' Troop/3rd Dragoons (28), Barrett's Troop/3rd Dragoons (27), and John Nelson's Virginia State Dragoons (15).10 After Davidson's death brigade was commanded by Pickens then Colonel Francis Locke (1).11 Commanded by Colonel Joseph Williams of Surry County, North Carolina.12 Also armed with American rifles, can dismount as 4 figures of riflemen.13 Later detached to Pickens' brigade before Cowpens. Composed of Surry & Wilkes County, North Carolina Riflemen (60), Lincoln & Rutherford County, North Carolina riflemen (40), and Beatty's Burke County, North Carolina riflemen (25)14 Commanded by Joseph Winston and composed of Winston's Surrey County and North Carolina Riflemen (100), Armstrong's Surrey County, North Carolina Riflemen (100). Also detached were and Clark's North Carolina State Dragoons (15-25); a militia unit armed with swords (they are factored into the mounted militia with Pickens).15 Major Reading Blount. Troops appear to have been new recruits. Command seems to have passed to Captain Yarborough sometime in 1781.

Uniform was brown faced red. Captain Beatty's Company of the Maryland State Regiment (@90 men) had already joined Greene. When the regiment joined the Maryland Brigade, the men were distributed between the 1st and 2nd Maryland Regiments, the Maryland Regiment Extraordinary did not become the 2nd Maryland Regiment as some sources incorrectly argue. 19 Composed of Bladen County, North Carolina Militia (200) and detachments of the Wilmington, North Carolina District Militia (100).20 Commanded by Colonel Peter Horry.21 commanded by Lieutenant Colonel Hugh Horry.22 Marion can call out local militia in South Carolina and within 2 areas of Georgetown if attacked or attacking. The militia are present for only that turn and then go home, however they can be called out every turn that Marion's brigade is attacking or attacked. time).23 The 1st Spartan, 2nd Spartan, and Hayes' regiments were really part of Sumter's command, but were detached to Pickens' command. Pickens' actual command was only McCall's Dragoons and Cunningham's riflemen (160 men). Pickens probably had no more than 400-500 men in the three regiments from Sumter's command plus 200-250 riflemen in McDowell's and Cunningham's units. Babbits' claim of a larger militia force doesn't mesh with the other primary sources.24 Was promoted to brigadier general on January 25, 1781.25 Commanded by Colonel John Thomas Jr., and composed of Thomas' 1st Battalion and Roebuck's 2nd Battalion26 Commanded by Colonel Thomas Brandon and composed of Brandon's 2nd Spartan (Fair Forest) SC Militia (100) and Haye's Little River, SC Militia (150).27 Composed of Jolly's Georgia Dragoons (20), McCall's South Carolina Dragoons (25); and Clark's North Carolina State Dragoons (15-25) which was from Davidson's force. all were militia units armed with swords.28 Composed of Cunningham's Georgia riflemen (55) and Hammond's South Carolina State Company(armed with rifles) (60). Commanded by Major John Cunningham.29 Called "1st Virginia Regiment" in an April 26, 1781 return. Uniform included: a jacket with sleeves, one shirt, a pair of linen overalls, a knapsack, nlanket, and a pair shoes each. Uniforms might be a plain blue jacked (?), possibly a short blue plain jacket.30 This is probably the Brown faced red reinforcements that are often mistaken as a new 2nd Maryland Regiment. A company of replacements for the Maryland line under Captain William Beatty arrived in Greene's camp December 7, 1780. Beatty had 75 replacements (rank and file) and the Maryland State Regiment had another 160 (rank and file). A large number of the Maryland State Regiment seem to have not made it to the Carolinas due to desertion and illness. This regiment DID NOT become the 2nd Maryland Regiment. The state records show that the regiment was
