FEI Canada Vancouver Chapter As the middle of February flies by, many of us are well into our year end routines. The lucky ones are finished. Auditors, IFRS financial statements, annual reports, and AIFs; all make this time of the year the busiest season for most accounting and financial professionals, so it’s easy to get wrapped up in work and not take a short break during the day... We’ve all read articles, taken courses, or had our

friends and relatives tell us that working through the day without a break

is not healthy. We do it anyway. We have deadlines to meet so we skip

lunch, work long hours, and miss our workouts. We all know that we feel

and work better when we take some time for ourselves. So here are a

few websites with some exercises and stress relievers that we can use

when we can’t get away from our desks:

continued from previous page If none of these work for you, then you can always attend an FEI Canada event. Take a much needed break, meet with friends, and learn something new. We have two great events this month: On Wednesday, February 22 we have the next installment in the National

Breakfast Seminars, with an Ernst & Young giving update on the current credit markets in “Credit Market Barometer.” Everyone who attends will re-ceive a copy of E&Y’s report on their recent survey of financial executives.

Our next Chapter breakfast, “The future looks...uncertain? The importance

of understanding and managing emerging risks.” is being held on Tuesday, February 28. Lisa Dorian, President of Powell Dorian and current Vice Presi-dent of FEI Canada, will present an overview of selected global risks from the World Economic Forum’s Global Risks 2011 Sixth Edition.

So take a break and come out and join us. And mark your calendar for May 31, 2012. That’s the date of our 60

th Anniver-

sary celebration. Our events committee is working hard putting together an evening that looks back over the history of our Chapter. If you are interested in helping with the event please contact Doug Morison ([email protected]). FEIsters representative, Hugh Lindsay ([email protected]), is putting together a video retrospective and any pictures or anecdotes that you’d like to share with the rest of us are most welcome. More about this special event can be read later in this month’s issue.

Well my break time is over. See you at the next event.

On Thursday January 19th, the Vancouver Chapter hosted an event at the Sutton Place Hotel featuring Alan Oishi, CEO of Shirlaws Canada, an international business coaching and consulting firm. Alan ex-plained in straightforward terms how company discussions around enhancing enterprise val-ue tend to focus on in-creasing profits. As a complementary effort, he cited many examples of companies which have intentionally allocated resources to building com-ponents that will be recognized (and given credit) by investors as “business” as-sets, with the result being a higher valuation multiple. These assets such as Tal-ent, Product Innovation and Scale-ability, while not traditionally 'monetized' in a formal balance sheet, are acknowledged as being factors that can significantly enhance revenue streams and drive long-term growth in profitability. A lively Q&A followed the formal presentation, with an emphasis on the relevance of the topic, given changes in markets and to business over the past few years. Many thanks to Alan and to SSU for putting on this informative presentation. (a copy of the presentation is available at https://portal.feicanada.org/page/chapters/vancouver/downloads)

Cloud Computing Seminar On Thursday, February 2

nd, we hosted William (Bill) Dupley, the Chief Solution

Manager of HP Canada. Bill spoke about how Cloud Computing is the fastest growing IT technology to-day, though from a small base. 80% of new enterprise applications are now de-ployed on the cloud. He went further to explain why CFOs should have an open mind about adopting it. For example, it is often behind many websites that, while managed by the corporate IT department overall, are also an integrated component. From there, Bill argued that Cloud Computing’s real potential is not to replace the corporate IT department, but rather to be part of an overall strate-gy, with Cloud Computing components integrated with more traditional compo-nents. This could be done at a level that suits the organization’s own environ-ment and objectives. One example of Cloud Computing being deployed on this basis is the United States Department of Defense. Bill also argued that Cloud Computing must be championed by the CFO. The CFO is involved in the business at the highest level and is therefore arguably better positioned than IT to explain the benefits of Cloud Computing. These benefits include faster deployment and better service. Many arguments made by IT are invariably focused on cost cutting, and while noble, rarely rank among an organization’s top priorities in a way that faster deployment and service do. Bill was an engaging speaker, and combined with the above CFO specific mes-sages rather than the dry technical details, delivered a dynamic and interesting presentation.

CIA Vancouver Control celebrates its 60th

Anniversary No, it’s not a clandestine section of the Central Intelligence Agency operating in Vancouver. It’s the original name of FEI Canada Vancouver Chapter. The Vancouver Control of the Controllers Institute of America was established on May 9, 1952, joining Hamilton, Quebec and Toronto as the fourth Canadian Chapter. In 1962, the organization was renamed Financial Executives Institute and in 1973 FEI Canada opened an office in Toronto. FEI changed its name again in 2000 and is now Financial Executives International. As FEI Canada Vancouver Chapter celebrates its 60

th Anniversary, we shall be

looking back at our origins and history, and recognizing the people and events that have contributed to the development of the chapter. On May 31, we shall be holding an anniversary party at the Terminal City Club, the venue of chapter meetings for many years. The club building is new since the chapter be-gan meeting there in the 1950s, but the spirit is the same. If you have any photos, documents or anecdotes that you’d like to contribute to articles in the newsletter or a display at the anniversary party, please contact me, Hugh Lindsay: [email protected] or 604-732-0366. I can take notes and do the writing if you just want to chat and reminisce.
