In your firstyear, much of your time will be spent on the mathematical and scientific basics that underpin all engineering disciplines.However, being a professional engineer is muchmore than the technical application of these sciences. Engineersmust alsoappreciatethecontextandimpactofengineeringactivitiesontheworldaroundus.EngineersAustralia(Australia'sprofessionalengineeringbody)definestheattributesneededbyagraduateprofessionalengineerasfollows:

Intheprojectyouwillmeetasateamofapproximatelysixstudentseachweekundertheguidanceofengineeringstaffandtutorstotackle amultidiscipline designprototypebuild project. The semesterwill concludewith 'DemoDay'where your teamwill begivenachancetoputyourprototypetothetestinacompetitiveenvironment.

    ENGG1100isdesignedtowelcomeyoutothecommunityofengineeringpractice,giveyoutoolsandskillstouseinyourdegreeprogramandinindustry,andtostimulateyourthinkingaboutprofessionalissuesthatyouwillfaceasagraduateengineer.

    2.1CourseAimsThecourseaimstoprovideyouwithexposuretoconceptsandissuesinengineeringincluding:

    anintroductiontoengineeringdesign,theengineeringsystemsapproach,conceptsofsustainability,andengineeringdecisionmakinganintroductiontothescopeofprofessionalengineeringandprofessionalresponsibilitiesincludingriskmanagement,occupationalhealthandsafety,andethicsexperienceinworkingeffectivelyinteamsexperienceinmanagingaproject,andyourtimepracticeinusingtechnicalinformationsourcesanintroductiontomethodsofengineeringcommunication:reportwriting,oralpresentation,datapresentation,drawinginterpretation,andrealisticsketchingandexposuretotheroleofengineeringinsociety.

    ENGG1100hasbeendesignedsothatyouexperiencewhatitistobeanengineeryouwillnotbeanengineeringstudentbutastudentengineer.Thereforethecourseisverydifferenttootherfirstyearcourses:thereisnoexam,50%ofyourmarkscomefromteamsubmissions,youwilltakeadesignfromconcepttoprototypeusingengineeringprocesses,andyouwillprojectmanage,get'yourhandsdirty',writereports,andgiveoralpresentations.
