Beauty
• Do me a favor…• Take a look at the person next to
you • First, comment on how good they
look today• Unless they look really bad… in
which case a white lie won’t hurt
• Second, ask very politely how much makeup, hair dye, hair gel and perfume they are wearing today
Beauty
• With that information try to come up with an estimate how much humans spend per year on beauty products• Go ahead• You can do it• Do you want the answer?• It is a 160 billion dollar business
Beauty
• Some interesting facts about “beauty”…• Americans spend more per year on
beauty products than they do education• Babies will smile longer at a female face
that is considered “attractive” • In a comprehensive study of 52 different
cultures across 5 continents, males chose beauty as the most important attribute in a female partner and females chose beauty as the second most important attribute in a male partner
Introduction to Integumentary
• The surprising thing about beauty is that it revolves around one body system• To understand this system that has
become an obsession in our culture (and others) we really have to understand the integumentary system• The integumentary system is a
system designed to protect the body that is composed of the skin and its accessories (hair, nails etc)
Introduction to Integumentary
• It is a system that is constantly bombarded by different types of attacks• UV radiation, microorganisms,
viruses, chemicals, plants and animals are all trying to attack this system • This is why it accounts for so much
of your body weight• Nearly 16% of a typical adult is
devoted to this important system
Two Components
• The integumentary systems is made of two major components• Each is separate and has
different functions• These two components account
for the two square meters of integument
Two Components
• The cutaneous membrane is commonly referred to as the skin• The cutaneous membrane is
made of multiple components • The epidermis can be referred to
as the superficial epithelium• The dermis is the underlying
area of connective tissues that bind the epidermis to the body
Two Components
• The accessory structures are the components of the integumentary system that are not skin• These include hair, nails and
multicellular exocrine glands• These structures often are found
in the skin with parts of their structure extending through the skin to the outer environment
Two Components
• A third component is sometimes associated with the integumentary system…• I know I lied…• They hypodermis is a layer of
loose connective tissue that separates the skin from other organs • For our purposes we will include
this as part of the Integumentary system
