MESSAGES

From humble beginnings as a fledgling seven-team league on the Western Canadian prairies in 1966 to the largest junior hockey league of its kind in the world today, no one would have envisioned the growth the Western Hockey League has experienced over the last 50 years.

The WHL has certainly come a long way and this is in large part due to the commitment WHL Club ownership has made in setting the standard for player development on a worldwide basis. The WHL and our 22 member Clubs take great pride in providing an ideal environment for the top prospects in the system to reach their potential both on and off the ice. From our world class coaching and arena facilities, to our comprehensive player safety and professional development initiatives and our fully guaranteed player education and scholarship program, the WHL is a leader in every category.

As we celebrate our 50th season, we not only salute our founders – Scotty Munro, Bill Hunter, Del Wilson and Jim Piggott – but also our owners and community leaders who, together with long-time WHL President Ed Chynoweth, have been instrumental in the establishment and growth of our League. We also want to pay tribute to the players, coaches, managers and staff, along with the officials, who over the past 50 years have made this League what it is today. None of this would be possible without the ongoing support of our fans, sponsors, broadcasters and media from throughout the League. Without your loyal support, WHL Clubs would not be in a position to continue offering our players the world class experience they deserve.

We trust you will join us in celebrating the WHL’s 50th Season as we prepare to host a series of special events throughout the 2015-16 season including the Canada – Russia Series in November in Kelowna and Kamloops, the CHL / NHL Top Prospects Game in January in Vancouver and the MasterCard Memorial Cup in May in Red Deer.

A Welcome from the President

Welcome back to another exciting year of Kootenay ICE Hockey. The 2015-2016 season brings winds of change to our Hockey Club with an entirely new coaching staff and a roster turnover that we have not experienced in years.

Despite the high turnover and cyclical nature of Major Junior Hockey our organization expects to make the playoffs every year and this year is no different. Thanks in part to the quality scouting and coaching we have made the playoffs all 17 years we have been in Cranbrook, all while finishing with a .500 or better record for a WHL record 16th consecutive seasons (both are the longest active streaks in the WHL).

Our organization has been very fortunate since moving to Cranbrook to enjoy an unparalleled amount of on-ice success. This year’s team will be the youngest in franchise history, but our expectations for success both on and off the ice will not change. Our fans have come to expect a team that is hard working on the ice and ambassadors for Cranbrook and the entire East Kootenay region off the ice.

DID YOU KNOW: KOOTENAY holds a 23-7-1-0 lifetime record versus SEATTLE (10-4-0-0 at home, 13-3-1-0 on the road, 6-1-0 in overtime)...Tonight marks the only meeting of the regular season between the ICE and THUNDERBIRDS with KOOTENAY hav-ing won the lone matchup during the 2014-15 season 5-2 at SEATTLE November 29, 2014...With his four-point effort (1-3-4) at EDMONTON October 26, Forward LUKE PHILP passed KEVIN KING to move into ninth place among all-time ICE franchise scoring leaders, with career totals of 229 regular season points (92-137-229)…PHILP, who has points in seven of his last eight outings (7-6-13), sits seventh among franchise assist leaders...Forward ZAK ZBOROSKY has put up multi-point efforts in six of his past seven games, totaling 14 points during that span (7-7-14)…Defenseman TROY MURRAY reached 150 career games played October 24 at RED DEER…Forward DYLAN STEWART scored in his KOOTENAY ICE debut October 23 versus SASKATOON…Forward MATT ALFARO reached 150 career regular season games played October 23 versus the BLADES…Goaltender WYATT HOFLIN is one victory shy of 50 career regular season wins…Forward MAX PATTERSON returned to the KOOTENAY lineup October 30 versus BRANDON after missing seven games with an upper body injury…Today’s game marks the third Halloween home game in ICE franchise history, with the Club holding a 1-1-0-0 record in the prior occasions.

TONIGHT’S OPPONENT

LAST OUTING: The T-Birds defeated the Brandon Wheat Kings 7-2 on Tuesday at ShoWare Center. Keegan Kolesar had a hat trick. Ryan Gropp, Ethan Bear, Jamal Watson and Kaden Elder had single tallies. Mathew Barzal had five assists and Bear had two assists. Taz Burman made 27 saves to get the win. Reid Duke and Rihards Bukarts scored for Brandon. Jordan Papirny had 29 saves on 35 shots in the loss.

LAST MEETING: This is the only game of the season against the ICE. Last season the Ice defeated the T-Birds 5-2 at ShoWare Center. Ethan Bear and Nolan Volcan scored for the T-Birds. Danny Mumaugh stopped 21 of 25 shots in the loss. The T-Birds are 8-17-4-1 with 1 tie against the ICE all time.
