“Standard Chartered Bank Malaysia Bhd has unveiled the 40,000 sq ft upgraded public park in Kuala Lumpur,
which will be managed by the company in the next seven years, reported The Business Times
The refurbished park supports the Malaysian economic transformation programme (ETP) by providing KL residents
with a green lung, as well as a place to relax and get in touch with nature.
The park was officially launched by Standard Chartered Group Chairman Sir John Peace and Datuk Raja Nong Chik
Raja Zainal Abidin, Federal Territories and Urban Well-being Minister.
"We have developed with the country since 1875 and we will continue to grow as an integral fabric of the country’s
heritage and future," said Peace.
Standard Chartered Bank is the first company to adopt and maintain a public park in line with national efforts to
make sure that every resident will be able to enjoy ample green space.
Furthermore, the park is under the entry point project of the greater Kuala Lumpur/Kelang Valley national key
economic area.
Kuala Lumpur Mayor Datuk Ahmad Phesal Talib, commented: "The city and its residents can benefit with having
more parks and green areas to reduce stress and create a healthy environment, not to mention an increase in
property value."
Moreover, the City Hall is also working to connect these parks with other green areas such as lakes, rivers, ponds
and playgrounds. It is also planning to plant trees all over the capital and its outskirts.”

INTERNATIONAL PARK (Paley Park)
Historical background
completed in 1967, Paley Park is celebrated as one of the smallest manageable urban parks, and a prime
example of a successful privately owned public space. The design for this 4200 square foot space,
created by Zion and Breene Associates for the William S. Paley Foundation, proves that in even a small
space can serve both a popular meeting ground and a place for relaxation and calm. Slightly elevated
from street level, the sidewalk blends with the park allowing for easy access from passer-by. The park’s
20-foot cascading waterfall, running at 1800 gallons per minute, creates a backdrop of sound that causes
the city noise to fade away. The walls are covered with dense, green ivy and 17 honey locust trees provide a thin overhead canopy.
The park's wire mesh chairs and tables help to make it a popular luncheon spot. Paley Park has an
intimate relation with the street. Low and inviting steps and trees that canopy the sidewalk often influence
passer-by to stroll through the park on impulse.
Location
The park is located at 3 East 53rd St. in Midtown Manhattan’s cultural district
Site Context
This park isoccupying a 4,200 square foot rectangular lot. There is dense urban fabric
surrounding the site, which consists of mostly high-rises, while the MOMA and
Rockefeller Center are within three blocks of the site to the west and southwest,
respectively. The park is surrounded on three of four sides, with one side open,
effectively spilling out onto the public sidewalk. Referred to as a Pocket Park—or
minipark/vest-pocket park—Paley operates as an open urban space at a very small
scale, serving immediately local population (approximately a 4-block radius). Paley Park
is the archetype pocket park, one that is directly visible from the street in an area of high
pedestrian traffic and helps bring natural light to the street level. Other pocket parks of
merit include Greenacre Park in NYC, and Downtown Squares in Savannah, Georgia.
Characteristics of the park
Berlin Wall Remnants in Paley Park
Nestled in a small Midtown plaza at 520 Madison Avenue is an unexpected piece of history.
Five sections of the Berlin Wall, in total measuring 12 feet high and 20 feet long, have been on
display here since 1990. Dazzling work by German artists Thierry Noir and Kiddy Citny cover
the wall's western-facing side. The eastern side, meanwhile, remains a blank slab of concrete—
a reminder of the oppressive political regime in the former East Germany. At first glance, this
artifact appears to be just another public mural; it goes largely unnoticed by the office workers
who sit in the park on their lunch break.
Activities that people frequently do at the park
The moveable chairs and tables that let people be comfortable and have some control over
where they sit. A waterfall provides a dramatic focal point and a reason to enter the park; its
noise blocks out the sounds of the city and creates a sense of quiet and privacy. There's
adequate shade in the summer from the trees, though they allow a beautiful dappled light to
pass through their leaves.

The TPO is an international tourism organisation that aims to build networks between cities around the world and develop the tourism industry in the Asia-Pacific region; 68 cities around the world count themselves as members, along with 32 industry players. Malaysia has five city representatives in the TPO: Ipoh, Kota Kinabalu, Malacca, Kota Baru and, of course, George Town.
The TPO Friendship Park is a small landscape park in George Town, Penang. Bordered by Farquhar Street on all sides, the park commemorates the 5th Forum of the Tourism Promotion Organisation for Asia Pacific (TPO) that was held in Penang from 17 to 20 September, 2012. The forum drew the participation of 68 city mayors and 32 tourism industry members from all over the Asia Pacific region. Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng was present at the TPO Friendship Park in front of the Bayview George Town Hotel to unveil a 2.7m-tall sculpture. Located right at the heart of TPO Friendship Park is a fountain jointly built by the Penang Island Municipal Council and developer BSG Property.
