Academic Vocab: Primary source

An original document containing firsthand information about a subject

Secondary source

Discussion, commentary, or analysis of a primary source which offers an interpretation of the primary source

Plagiarize To take the work or ideas of someone else and pass it off as one's own (to copy or to steal)

Parenthetical citations

Citations to original sources that appear in the text of a research paper (also called "in-text citations")

Bibliography A list of sources used for research (also called "works cited")

Annotated bibliography

A list of sources used in research that contains comments or summaries about each source

Rhetoric The art of using words to persuade others through writing or speaking

Orate/orator Orate: to make a speech, often lengthy Orator: a public speaker who is skilled and eloquent

Eloquent A way of speaking or writing that is clear in meaning and beautifully or thoughtfully organized

evaluate The process of analyzing and judging the value or credibility of information/sources/etc.

Literary Terms: Protagonist The central character in a text or film who is involved in the main

conflict of the plot

Antagonist The character who opposes or struggles against the protagonist

Hero/heroine A person idealized & admired for courage, outstanding achievements/abilities, or noble qualities

Villain/nemesis Villain: a character with evil actions or motives that are important to the plot Nemesis: a longstanding rival or archenemy

Plot The sequence of related events that make up a story/novel/film

Subplot A secondary or side story that supports the main plot and usually involves minor characters

Exposition The beginning of a plot where background info is given (setting, characters introduced, conflict begins)

Rising action The movement of a plot toward a climax, which is fueled by the characters' responses to the conflict

Climax The point of a plot where the action reaches its peak (turning point where the outcome of conflict is decided)

Falling action ( denouement)

The part of a plot that occurs after the climax which leads to the resolution of the conflict Denouement: French for "untying;" the knots of the conflict begin to untie and resolve

Resolution The conclusion of the plot that resolves the conflict or events of the story

Conflict The struggle or problem in a plot

Internal conflict

Occurs when a character struggles with a decision/need/emotion inside their mind

External conflict

Occurs when a character struggles with an outside force (another character, a societal expectation, or a physical obstacle)

Setting The time and place in which a story happens

Flashback A conversation or event that happened before the beginning of a plot--often these interrupt the chronological order of the plot in order to give the audience more information

Symbol Anything (animal, object, event, person, place) that represents itself, but also stands for something else on a figurative level

Character People, animals, robots, or imaginary creatures that take part in the plot of a story or film (main characters & minor characters)

Flat/static character

Flat character: a one-dimensional character Static character: a character who does not change in response to events of the plot

Round/dynamic character

Round character: a fully developed character Dynamic character: a character who changes in response to the events of the plot... "well-rounded"
