On Monday Sharon’sCakes in Shelburne wasbusier than usual, thanksto a film crew from Slicetelevision filming a spinoff of the Rich Bride PoorBride show, Rich GroomPoor Groom that is set toair in April 2011.
Rich Groom PoorGroom is coming to view-ers in Canada via Slice andthe creators of the interna-tional hit series Rich BridePoor Bride.
This new series featuresgrooms who are steppingup to the challenge ofplanning their wedding, without any input fromtheir bride-to-be. A $5000addition to the weddingbudget is the payoff eachbride gets for being kept inthe dark about any deci-sions the groom makes, including the weddingdress.
“We’re into our sixthseason of Rich Bride PoorBride and what we wereseeing is that oddlyenough it’s not always abride’s day,” said SeanBuckley, co-creator andExecutive Producer ofRich Groom Poor Groom,
and owner of BuckProductions.
“We’ve seen some pret-ty extraordinary groomscome through and some-times you couldn’t believewhat was happening, thegrooms were wanting totake over the wedding, really wanting to presstheir vision forward, reallywanting to be a bigger partof the day. We basicallywanted to give the groomtheir day.”
According to SharonMorden, owner ofSharon’s Cakes, KenSeeback, the AssociateProducer of Rich GroomPoor Groom, contactedher two weeks ago, lettingher know they were inter-ested in using her shopduring filming for episode13, featuring local groomand bride-to-be CelMatheson and MichelleCinnamon.
“”The format of RichBride Poor Bride is sosound that it could weath-er a spin-off series; not alot of shows can,” said Mr.Buckley.
“The wedding is inMount Forest,” said Mrs.Morden. She commentedthat they were looking fora place to shoot a wedding
cake scene that was some-where in the area of thewedding.
“I sent them a video ofthe layout of my place,”said Mrs. Morden. “I sortof walked them through
and sent it off and theythought the place would beconducive to what theyneeded.”
“Organically, all thevendors are recognized,”said Mr. Buckley. “This
couple seeks Sharon outbecause she was capable,as a designer, to achievewhat the groom’s visionwas.”
He said Sharon waspicked to appear on the
show because of her tal-ent.
“The groom hadsourced Sharon out, thegroom had in a sense rec-ognized that this was theartist that could achieve
his vision.”Sharon has been baking
and decorating cakes for29 years. She started outtaking a night schoolcourse at a high school inBolton where she grew up.She went from being a stu-dent to teaching classes ofher own and finally to hav-ing her own shop.
“I just love makingthings out of sugar thatyou can eat,” she said.“It’s really motivating andinspiring that people aretaking so much of an inter-est (in cake baking).”
She said her home/busi-ness is 113 years old andthe spot where they weredoing a lot of the filmingwas on the old hard woodfloor.
“They do this soundtest where everybody hasto be stay quiet so they can
tape the sound in the roomwith nothing happeningand all you could hear theoccasional (squeakingsound) from the floor,” shesaid. “We had to be carefulabout how much wemoved because the micro-phones were really sensi-tive.”
She commented thatbefore filming, the crewremoved anything fromthe room that would sug-gest where Sharon’s Cakesis located.
“On TV they don’twant you to know whattown you’re in, they wantyou to be able to see theshow so that it can applyanywhere,” she explained.
According to Mrs.Morden, the whole experi-ence on Monday was“really interesting” and “alot of fun.”
