Piero Belforte These comparative DWV plots report the behavior
of errors on a 100us (50K oscillations) time window after oscillator's
start up, for various chices of the simulation time steps (SWAN mode).
February 5 at 2:38pm · Edited · Like
Piero Belforte Increasing the time step over 1ps the peak-to-
peak max amplitude of the error increases. At 100fs time step,
70us after start up the error increases an gets larger than 1ps step
value (49uVpp max at t=0). This effect can be due to rounding errors
effects due to huge number of calculated samples when working at
100fs step (1 BILLION SAMPLES on a 100us window).

Piero Belforte On the top right the Spice error result is reported.
SWAN mode result is at the bottom. The window is 100ns from 9.9
to 10us after start up. The error trace is in BLUE.
February 5 at 1:08pm · Edited · Like
Piero Belforte It easy to notice that after 20us of free
oscillations (1000 oscillations) the Spice error is about 1Vpp
because the oscillator signal has shifted accumulating a 1/4 period
delay (about 5ns).
February 5 at 12:51pm · Edited · Like
Piero Belforte In SWAN mode, on the contrary, working at 1ps
tstep, the two waveforms (oscillator & ref) are still perfectly
aligned. The amplitude error is on the order of 44 MICROVOLTS to be
compared to 1VPP of Spice. SWAN amplitude error is 88db lower than
Spice error.

Piero Belforte As known, Spice can have problems dealing with s-
plane transfer functions due to variable time-step. SWAN mode
doesn't suffer of these issues because it works at FIXED time -step.

Congratulations Spicy, we now hit 200 FB likes! Thanks everyone
... remember if you like Spicy, please help by posting a good
review on itunes .. it helps us support development of the app ..
we have only a handful of reviews and most of the time from the
few who wanted something else and were not happy ... but 200
FB likes means maybe we can get 200 good reviews on itunes!
That would help us out a lot ... just go to itunes, search
ischematics.com, and you can review the free, or full or now
swan versions, which ever you like .. (or review all if you like) ...
:)

knew how to get the male dominated engineering world to notice
the SWAN there. What a genius marketing Ad idea of the Spicy Swan!

EFFECTS of TDR PULSE RISE TIME on RESPONSE.

Piero Belforte With the shortest rise time (10ps 20%-90%,
equivalent bandwith 35 Ghz)) we get the maximum resolution. The
negative peaks due to lumped capacitances are clearly visible and
reach a minimum on impedance levels.
January 25 at 12:19pm · Like
Piero Belforte Slowing down the TDR pulse, the peaks due to
lumped loads decrease and disapppear with a 500ps rise time
(700Mhz analog bandwith). In this last situation the uniformelyy cap-
loaded segment behaves like a uniform TL of about 41ohm impedance
and a total 2.46 ns delay. The extra 460ps round-trip delay is the
effect of lumped caps on the pure 2ns delay of the unloaded line.

Piero Belforte In this case the sign of the reflection is positive
due to series inductive reactance. Even in this case the value 1 of
the the rflected wave is not reached because of the 30ps rise time of
the TDR generator step.

Piero Belforte Due to finite 30ps (20%-80%) risetime of TDR
pulse compared to 100ps RC time constant of the cap, the -1
reflction (short circuit) is not reached.

units (rho): 1.2 is the reflection coefficient of 75 ohm vs 50 ohm

reponse) in red. In green the S11 of the cable (reflected wave) as
step reponse in time domain.
