LOCATION AND SHORT HISTORY

• Is an island country in South Asia near south-east India• Arrivals from India brought the Buddhism which

helped to develop great civilizations in cities as such as Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa.• In the 2nd, 3rd and 4th centuries AD Sri Lanka

became a rich kingdom. Great kings built large reservoirs and irrigation canals to take water from one area to another.

PHYSICAL FEATURES• CLIMATE: Sri Lanka's climate can be described as tropical, and

quite hot. Its position between 5 and 10 north latitude endows the country with year-round warm weather, moderated by ocean winds and considerable moisture.• MAIN LANDFOMS: Most of Sri Lanka is ringed by sandy

beaches, and small, irregular lagoons.• ANIMALS AND VEGETATION:

-Sri Lanka’s natural vegetation covers about one-third of the total land area. The vegetation in most parts of the country is forest.-Sri Lanka has one of the highest rates of biological endemism Most importants animals in Sri Lanka are Asian elephant, leopard, Red Faced Macaques, Water Buffalo, reptiles, insects…

•With a population of about 20 million. Density is highest in the south west where Colombo, the country's main port and industrial center, is located. Is a stationary pyramid with a declining birth rate and low death rate. Therefore a long expectancy life

POLITICAL SISTEM AND STATE SYMBOL

• Politics of Sri Lanka have representative democratic republic, where by the President of Sri Lanka is both head of state and head of government. Executive power is exercised by the government. Legislative power is vested in both the government and parliament. The Judiciary is independent of the executive and the legislature.• The national symbols of Sri Lanka are the

national anthem, flag, emblem, flower, tree, bird, butterfly, gemstone and sport.

MAIN ECONOMIC ACTIVITIES

• Primary Sector: Sri Lankan primary agriculture sector can be divided into three major categories farming, fishing and aquaculture.• Secondary Sector: manufacturing which is the

country’s largest industrial subsector and the construction sector followed by mining and quarrying.• Tertiary Sector:The major contributory sectors to

growth were the financial services, telecom, trading and transport.

• The culture of Sri Lanka mixes modern elements with traditional aspects. has long been influenced by the heritage of Theravada Buddhism • The country has a rich artistic tradition, with

NATIONAL COSTUME

• There is no official national costume in Sri Lanka. But the most popular items are sari for women and sarong for men. The clothes of women differ much depending on the age of a woman. Men wear a sarong a long piece of cloth that is wrapped around the body. This piece is the most popular and widespread.

DANCE AND MUSIC• The music of Sri Lanka has its roots in four primary

influences: ancient folk rituals, Buddhist religious traditions, the legacy of European colonization, and the commercial and historical influence of nearby Indian culture—specifically, Bollywood cinema.

• The origin of the dances of Sri Lanka lies with the indigenous people of Sri Lanka.

SPORT ACTIVITIES

• Badminton is the most important sport in Sri Lanka. Badminton was also introduced to "Ceylon" by the advent of British well over 100 years ago.

-Sri Lanka competed at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. This was the nation's seventeenth appearance at the Summer Olympics.-Sri Lanka made its début at the 1996 Summer Paralympics in Atlanta, in track and field.- Some of the famous athlets are Kumar Sangakkara, Sanath Jayasuriya, Muttiah Muralitharan… and some of the famous players of badminton are Thilini Jayasinghe, Dinuka Karunaratne, Niluka Karunaratne…
