After graduating from h i g h s c h o o l , H e l m e n r o l l e d a t t h eU n i v e r s i t y o f K a n s a s C i t y, t h e o n l y c o l l e g e s h e c o u l d a f f o r d .H e r f a t h e r �s i n c o m e i n c r e a s e d i n t h e e a r l y 1 9 4 0 s w h e n h econver ted used machines to war p r o d u c t i o n a n d H e l m w a s a b l e t otransfer to the University of Chicago, w h e r e s h e r e c e i v e d a P h . B . i n1944 . In 1945 Helm mar r ied her f i r s t h u s b a n d , t h e a r c h a e o l o g i s tRichard �Scotty� MacNeish. The c o u p l e i m m e d i a t e l y w e n t t oMexico, where MacNeish conducted a r c h a e o l o g i c a l f i e l d w o r k f o r h i sd o c t o r a l d i s s e r t a t i o n a n d H e l m c a r r i e d o u t e t h n o g r a p h i cresearch for her M.A. at Chicago ( 1 9 5 0 ) i n a r u r a l m e s t i z ocommunity in Tamaulipas.
